Eleventh IHR Conference A Rousing Success

Major Progress Recounted, New Challenges Cited

Spirit of Confidence and Optimism Marks Revisionist Gathering

More than 200 attendees and participants from across the United States and several foreign countries met in Irvine, California, October 10-12, 1992, for the Eleventh International Revisionist Conference sponsored by the Institute for Historical Review. They gathered for a pleasant weekend of Revisionist fellowship, and to see and hear presentations by 16 speakers -- including several of the world's most prominent Revisionist historians.

The speakers (including two in videotape presentations) reported on the latest breakthroughs in Revisionist scholarship, and recounted the most recent successes in the educational, legal and outreach fields. Several speakers emphasized that although the Revisionist side has decisively won the scholarly debate, the desperate defenders of the Holocaust extermination story -- now defeated on the historical battlefield -- are taking final refuge in the dark fortress of pseudo-religious repression.

(Conference proceedings were once again recorded, and will soon be available on both audio and video cassette.)

Speakers and attendees alike proclaimed the end of the Holocaust extermination story as history, resolved to battle against it as myth, reviewed the important progress of the last two years, and outlined plans for bold new measures to further Revisionism's outreach and impact.

Setting the Tone

In his opening remarks, IHR Director J. Marcellus formally greeted Conference attendees and speakers in the name of the Institute for Historical Review. He noted with pleasure the conspicuous absence of those perennial Zionist pests -- Irv Rubin and his Jewish Defense League hoodlums -- who had bedeviled and enlivened several earlier IHR Conferences. Marcellus then introduced the IHR's new associate editor, Greg Raven, and keynote speaker Mark Weber.

It was thanks largely to Marcellus' calm organizational skill, as well as the long hours of work by IHR's capable office staff, that this Eleventh Conference went off without a hitch.

Mark Weber, editor of the IHR's Journal of Historical Review, then helped to set the Conference's theme in an illuminating and upbeat keynote address. He expertly (and entertainingly) set IHR and Revisionism's agenda in today's (and tomorrow's) worldwide political and intellectual context.

After reviewing the dramatic progress that has been made since the last Conference two years ago (in Washington, DC), he pointed to some of the major challenges we will face in the months and years to come. Our adversaries from Beverly Hills to Jerusalem are atremble, Weber explained, citing one recent statement after another by leading anti-Revisionists to demonstrate the Holocaust lobby's high level of fear and anxious concern over Revisionism's indisputable advances.

Although Revisionist scholarship has not yet had a major impact on the general public, the historiographic battle has already been won. For example, long-suppressed Auschwitz death certificates -- published for the first time anywhere in the Fall 1992 IHR Journal -- alone authoritatively discredit the standard Auschwitz extermination story, Weber pointed out.

The strength of the Revisionist case is also shown by the paltry academic responses to Revisionism from prominent Exterminationists such as Jean-Claude Pressac and Deborah Lipstadt.

The more intelligent defenders of the orthodox Holocaust story understand this, and it is therefore not surprising that they are rapidly retreating into pseudo-religious Holocaust obscurantism, silly chicanery, and name-calling in their efforts against Revisionists. The Holocaust campaign is increasingly taking on all the features of a religion, Weber said, complete with holy writings, high priests, saints, ritual incantations, and resort to legal tribunals to punish heretics and blasphemers.

Throughout the three-day gathering, Weber continued to maintain the Conference's pace and tone as Master of Ceremonies, providing informative and often humorous introductions of the guest speakers.

Dr. James J. Martin, a living link to the great American Revisionist tradition of Harry Elmer Barnes and Charles Beard, then dedicated the Eleventh Conference to the late George Morgenstern. Addressing an IHR Conference for the first time in nine years, the dean of Revisionist historians recounted the career and impact of the Chicago Tribune editor and historian who wrote the first, and in many ways still the best, analysis of the actual causes and real culprits of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

No historian is better qualified to pay tribute to Morgenstern than Martin, Revisionism's foremost historian of 20th-century American public opinion and the American anti-interventionist and anti-imperialist tradition. (For example, Martin contributed a valuable introduction to the attractive 1991 IHR reprint edition of Morgenstern's classic study, Pearl Harbor: The Story of the Secret War.)

Dr. Martin offered not merely a warm, informative tribute to Morgenstern's life and work, but a mini-seminar on the rise and consequences of America's meddling in East Asia, 1898-1941, glinting as ever with his dry wit, humane insight, and scholarly precision.

The End of the Auschwitz Story

Several conference speakers dealt directly with the historiographical demise of the Auschwitz gas chamber imposture, and referred to the effort now underway to transform a pretended historical fact into a vague, non-historical myth of religious veneration.

Dr. Robert Faurisson, the peerless Revisionist professor from France, explained in detail just how and when the ailing historical myth of the extermination gas chambers finally perished, even for its supporters. In the tradition of his great countryman Bossuet, Faurisson delivered a kind of funeral oration over the prostrate cadaver of the Holocaust-as-history. The Holocaust story is being resurrected, he went on to warn, this time as a religion impervious to rigorous historical analysis, by its fanatical defenders around the world.

Prof. Faurisson, who faces further trials and the possibility of staggering court-ordered fines on his return to France, spoke of the intensified legal persecution of Revisionists across Europe. While praising our First Amendment, he warned Americans to beware of the implacable fanaticism of the Holocaust cultists. His lecture, seemingly effortless and effervescing like a champagne brut, was an indispensable summary of how far Revisionists have come, and what we still face.

Dr. Arthur Butz -- addressing an IHR conference for the first time since 1982 -- took aim at a critically important aspect of the Auschwitz extermination story. The author of the pathbreaking work of modern Holocaust Revisionist scholarship, The Hoax of the Twentieth Century, prefaced his formal presentation with a background report on the origins and impact of Bradley Smith's Campus Project at Northwestern University, where Butz serves as an associate professor.

Citing information from the detailed 1989 work about Auschwitz by French anti-Revisionist researcher JeanClaude Pressac, Dr. Butz presented a brilliant and devastating refutation of the Exterminationist view of the planning and construction of the Auschwitz camp crematories. Butz' presentation is a valuable update to his 1976 book.

In a sobering but spirited and hilarious address, headline-making English historian David Irving described the latest efforts by Zionist Jewish groups around the world to intimidate and discredit him -- including window-smashing of British bookstores that carry his works, screaming mobs outside his London residence, and obstruction by police and immigration authorities in Germany, Austria, Italy, South Africa, Canada and Argentina.

The international bestselling author then told the inside story of how, through his own contacts in Moscow, he dug up the long-suppressed portions of the detailed diary of Third Reich propaganda chief Josef Goebbels. Irving explained how he deciphered and translated the diary for publication in the prestigious London Sunday Times, and described the international furor that this collaboration touched off. Turning to the "memoir" of SS Jewish affairs officer Adolf Eichmann, Irving offered a controversial assessment of its importance in understanding Germany's wartime Jewish policy. Afterwards, he crossed swords with Prof. Faurisson in a dramatic exchange, making this a particularly memorable presentation.

Legal Victory

This conference's Sunday evening banquet dinner, besides being especially sumptuous, afforded a fine opportunity to celebrate a key legal triumph over our persecutors.

Institute founder Willis Carto presented the IHR's George Orwell Free Speech award to Ernst Zündel for his courageous nine-year struggle for freedom of expression and historical truth, which culminated in his stunning victory in Canada's Supreme Court, August 27. Ewald Althans, a youthful German activist, accepted the handsome plaque on Zündel's behalf.

Regrettably -- and in spite of his complete legal vindication in Canada -- Zündel was stopped by US immigration authorities at the airport in Toronto and informed that he was not welcome in the United States. Mr. Carto introduced a videotape address that Zündel had prepared "just in case" he was (for the second time) somehow prevented from entering the US and could not appear in person.

In his video presentation, Zündel thanked the many IHR staffers and supporters who have aided him in so many ways over the years, and reaffirmed his devotion to the cause of rehabilitating the honor of his German homeland. And in a telephone message to the Conference that had been recorded just minutes earlier, Zündel again thanked the IHR for its support, and expressing regret at not being able to be there in person.

Willis Carto informed banqueters of an important change in the format and scope of IHR periodicals. Beginning in January 1992, The Journal of Historical Review will appear every two months in a larger-size and less rigorously academic format. The "newsier" IHR Newsletter will be incorporated into the new Journal.

Since its founding in 1980, the twelve volumes of the academic-format Journal -- with no fewer than 5,800 pages -- have devoted many pages to rather "heavy" and sometimes quite technical articles exploring in detail virtually every conceivable aspect of the Holocaust extermination story and other issues. The new Journal will continue to feature scholarly historical articles, but will seek to broaden its scope to more fully embrace traditional Revisionist historical themes, as well as contemporary political and intellectual currents important for Revisionism. Even as our scholars and researchers carry on the essential work of shoveling under historical corpses, including the Holocaust story, the new Journal should increase its appeal, readership and impact.

The Rudolf Hess Story

This conference's scheduled "Mystery Speaker" was Wolf R_diger Hess, only son of Hitler's deputy, Rudolf Hess. Although Wolf Hess was not able to speak in person due to unforeseen medical problems, he was able to address attendees on videotape. Surmounting considerable logistical difficulties, two good friends of the IHR -- Mr. Manfred Lating and Mr. Manfred Koch -- were able to fly to Germany on short notice, professionally record Hess's lecture on videotape in his home, and send it to the IHR in time for processing and viewing at the Conference.

In his memorable presentation, Wolf Hess talked about the life and death of his father, this century's "Prisoner of Peace" whose courageous flight in 1941 to Britain to seek an end to war between two countries he loved resulted in 46 years of imprisonment. Wolf Hess provided incomparable personal insights into his father's sacrifice and martyrdom for Germany, Europe and the cause of peace, and offered dramatic and persuasive new evidence to support his conclusion that his father was murdered by his captors.

Leuchter's Struggle Against Persecution

Fred Leuchter, America's foremost expert on the design and operation of execution gas chambers, and the author of the history-making technical study that demolishes the Auschwitz gassing myth, told the conference of his own "botched execution" at the hands of the international Jewish Zionist lobby. As part of his moving description of the malicious campaign to discredit and punish him by destroying his ability to make a living, Leuchter told the inside story of his unlawful arrest and expulsion from Britain.

Attorney Kirk Lyons next reported on his legal work on behalf of Leuchter and other "thought criminals." America's foremost legal defender of the "politically incorrect" concluded with a rousing call to arms against the enemies of freedom and truth.

Justice for Demjanjuk

Jerome Brentar, the most valiant and persistent defender of John Demjanjuk, discussed -- for the first time before an IHR audience -- his own role in exposing the US-Israeli-Soviet frame-up of the Ukrainian-American falsely convicted in Jerusalem as "Ivan the Terrible" of Treblinka. Brentar told of his search for evidence on three continents, his personal experience with the skullduggery and treachery of the US Justice Department's "Office of Special Investigations," his 1988 expulsion from George Bush's presidential campaign, and his key role in educating Demjanjuk defenders like Congressman Jim Traficant (Dem.-Ohio) and journalist and former White House official Patrick Buchanan.

Victory in the Mermelstein Case

Ted O'Keefe recounted how "Holocaust survivor" Mel Mermelstein, self-proclaimed "best witness" to the Auschwitz gas chambers, was licked on the law and the facts in Los Angeles Superior Court in September 1991, abruptly ending his ten-year campaign to bankrupt the Institute. O'Keefe told how he gathered and evaluated crucial defense evidence under the direction of attorneys Mark Lane and Bill Hulsy. The IHR editor then supplied the hilarious details of how "eyewitness" Mermelstein's libel and conspiracy suit collapsed before the eyes of his high-priced lawyers, as his credibility crumbled on the witness stand. But, O'Keefe added, this lecture dealt with only a small part of the historical detection work and courtroom drama of the Mermelstein case. The whole story will be told in O'Keefe's forthcoming book, Best Witness, which is due for publication next year.

Revisionist Media Outreach

Ahmed Rami, the gallant Moroccan officer in exile who has become a radio apostle of Revisionism in Sweden, began his presentation with a greeting in French. Prof. Faurisson then read (and commented on) Rami's lecture in English. Rami told of his trial and conviction in Sweden for making statements that showed a "lack of respect" for the Jewish people, and how he turned his three months in prison into a successful Revisionist seminar for guards and inmates alike. He and Faurisson also gave a witty report on Faurisson's headline-making visit to Sweden. Finally, Rami offered an Arab and Islamic perspective on the Holocaust issue, as well as experienced advice on using mass media in the battle for minds and hearts.

Bradley Smith, longtime director of IHR's media outreach campaign and organizer of last year's immensely successful project to alert campuses across America to the case against the "Holocaust," was never in better form as he told what really prompted him to launch his campaign to place full-page ads in student newspapers, and what it takes to be a full-time Holocaust Revisionist, at home and over the airwaves. Among dozens of anecdotes and one-liners, Brad recalled Faurisson's frank assessment of him as an American intellectual, and advanced his own proposals for artistic tributes to Holocausters Marvin Hier and Simon Wiesenthal.

The conference concluded, fittingly, with an inspirational presentation by David Cole, a 23-year-old American Jewish Revisionist. Cole told how he came first to doubt and then to challenge the gas chamber stories. The young movie-maker told of his recent trip to Poland to gather material for a film documentary on Auschwitz (where Ernst Zündel was his guide), including an extraordinarily revealing videotape interview with the research director of the Auschwitz State Museum, Franciszek Piper.

Finally, attendees were given an opportunity to view a videotape recording of the "Montel Williams Show" in which Cole and Weber effectively made the case for Holocaust Revisionism. (This session was originally broadcast April 30 on dozens of television stations around the country.) Also shown was a videotape interview with attorney Mark Lane, who played such a major role in the courtroom battle with Mermelstein. In the interview (which was recorded and produced by Cole), Lane humorously recounts the background story of the legal victory of the IHR and co-defendants.

Confidence and Optimism

This well-attended Conference was itself a manifestation of progress. As ever, the average educational and intelligence level was high. Many attendees were professionals, including two psychologists, several professors, a psychiatrist, at least five attorneys, a priest and at least two ministers, several teachers, physicians, engineers, military officers, an airline pilot, a geologist and a chemist.

Attendees came from at least 27 American states and at least ten foreign countries, and represented a broad range of political views, religious beliefs, accents and ethnic backgrounds. Many of those who were attending an IHR Conference for the first time were young, including a good sampling of students.

We were pleased to welcome many trusted friends and supporters of the IHR, including Dr. Robert Countess, Dr. William Lindsey, Dr. Clarence Lang, Mr. Max Kerstan, Mr. Sam Dickson, Mr. Russ Granata, Mr. Arthur Vogt, Mr. Jack Wikoff, and Dr. George Ashley.

This Conference had special meaning for one attendee, Joe Fields. At the Eighth IHR Conference in 1987 he met a fellow attendee, Deirdre van Heerden, who later become his wife. And during this Eleventh Conference, they became parents of a nine-pound, twelve-ounce baby girl, their second daughter.

A number of veteran attendees commented that this Conference was the best ever. Although it lacked the high drama and sense of breakthrough of some earlier conferences, the mood that prevailed at this Eleventh IHR Conference was one of confidence, mixed with some pride at what has been achieved in recent years. Participants and attendees alike left with a palpable sense of vindication and sober optimism.

Latest Computer Network Holocaust Debate Closed Down

'Electronic Democracy' Includes Censorship

The latest effort by Revisionists to foster open debate on the Holocaust issue over a computer network "bulletin board system" (BBS) has been closed down by network censors after just three weeks.

On September 9, 1992, the GEnie computer network permitted the creation of a new "Auschwitz" BBS discussion topic, which was initiated by Revisionist activist "P.LARSEN."

After five days -- and 52 messages posted by both skeptics and defenders of the Holocaust story -- the system operator (sysop) responsible for the discussion area that included the new "Auschwitz" topic, Tony Kendall, warned participants:

I am not saying anyone has done this so far, but please be advised that this topic is not to be used for "the Holocaust didn't happen" "lobby." That type of discussion is offensive and totally without fact. There have been problems with this in other parts of GEnie and I will not let that happen here. I abhor censorship but GEnie (and the sysop) reserves the right (as with editors of other media) to decide subject content on its services. In the interest of covering all facets of Germany, not only the good, I am allowing this topic...

The "problems" referred to here are, of course, earlier BBS discussions in which Revisionists had proven so effective that the discussion areas were shut down.

By September 27, more than 140 public messages had been posted on the new "Auschwitz" discussion, in which the Revisionist side was clearly prevailing.

At about this point, an Exterminationist who calls herself POOH.BAH (and who had been very active in a previous GEnie BBS Holocaust discussion) joined in, along with several friends, posting a blizzard of shopworn, erroneous, rude and off-topic arguments. This brought a rapid breakdown in the tone and substance of the discussion. Although sysop Kendall had explicitly warned that the discussion was to be limited to Auschwitz, the anti-Revisionist side violated this rule with impunity, repeatedly posting criticisms of other aspects of Third Reich policy.

POOH.BAH offered $50,000 to P.LARSEN for proof that Elie Wiesel had ever actually claimed that "geysers of blood" had spouted forth from the graves of murdered Jews. When the published source of this statement was cited, POOH.BAH declined to pay up, whimpering that Wiesel only quoted another person as the source of this obviously absurd story.

IHR Associate Editor Greg Raven (who set off the earlier GEnie BBS Holocaust debate), joined the heated discussion on September 30 with a few brief, to-the-point messages designed not only to head the Exterminationists off at the past, but also to point out that even prominent Exterminationist scholars are now making remarkable concessions to the Revisionist view. The next day, P.LARSEN posted a cogent summary of the revisionist position.

All this was apparently too much for the Exterminationists. Sysop Kendall removed all of Raven's messages from view, and closed the area to further discussion. On October 2, the topic itself was expunged.

In all, though, 356 messages had been posted before the "Auschwitz" discussion was shut down. It is estimated that for every person posting messages, more than a dozen BBS subscribers quietly follow the discussion without participating. Hundreds -- and perhaps thousands -- of subscribers (in the United States and several foreign countries) probably followed the intense discussion.

Although Kendall (and GEnie) claimed the same right as "editors of other media ... to decide subject content," computer message systems such as GEnie are actually quite different. In addition to telephone connect charges, GEnie subscribers pay a monthly subscription fee to the network. Thus, every GEnie network subscriber who does not accept the "politically correct" view of the Holocaust story is, in effect, nevertheless still obliged to pay GEnie for this censorship "service." (GEnie has not indicated any readiness to reimburse subscribers whose voices have been silenced.)

All the same, sysop Kendall has promised to "archive" the entire "Auschwitz" discussion, and place the file in the GEnie Deutschland BB library. This means that any interested person can "download" it in the future, much like consulting a work in a library.

GEnie is a service of the GE corporation, which also owns NBC television.

In spite of such regrettable chicanery, the long-range trend is clear. It won't be long before yet another discussion of the Holocaust story will begin on yet another BBS network (such as Prodigy, Compuserve or Internet). And each time a new discussion starts up, more revisionists participate, posting ever more effective arguments.

Zionist pressure groups, including the Anti-Defamation League and the Simon Wiesenthal Center, had been doing everything in their power to silence such robust debate. In its Frontline newsletter (Jan. 1992), the ADL boasted openly of its pressure on the Prodigy computer network to nip in the bud any BBS discussion of the Holocaust issue. But even The Washington Post editorially rebuked "the League's efforts ... to muffle bare-knuckled debate," and a New York Times editorial found that the "ADL's censorship strategy was unnecessary."

As time goes on, shutting down open discussion of the Holocaust issue will be more and more obviously an act of censorship. Arbitrarily silencing healthy debate on this topic will be seen by ever more people precisely for what it is: surrender to pressure from desperate defenders of what has become a quasi-religious cult.

A tip from revisionists who participate in BBS debates: It is generally much more effective to emphasize major revisionist points repeatedly, than to get overly bogged down responding to diversionary exterminationist arguments. For example, the long-suppressed Auschwitz death certificates (recently published in the Fall IHR Journal), demolish a central pillar of the Holocaust extermination story. Defenders of the Holocaust story have no real response to these documents (and the accompanying commentary in the Journal article). Also keep in mind that IHR material, including the texts of our popular series of introductory leaflets, can be posted without restriction.

Fascinating Conference

During the course of pursuing two different degrees at six different universities, both in the United States and abroad, I have never found an academic conference to be so fascinating, so informative, and so original, as to hold my complete and total attention from start to end, as I did the recent Eleventh IHR Conference.

It is understandable that the primary focus of this Conference was on Holocaust Revisionism. After all, this is the principal bastion of historical close-mindedness and the source of the greatest heavy-handed chicanery. All the same, I very much hope that future conferences will deal with a broader range of historical topics.

Daniel D. Desjardins -- Crestview, Fla.

Changing Tactics

The Eleventh Conference was very well organized, and I greatly enjoyed the usual array of excellent speakers and the rich range of stimulating ideas. I particularly enjoyed the presentations by Wolf Hess, Fred Leuchter (who shows such courage under fire), and David Cole (whose remarks were well thought out).

I was very interested to learn how the Holocaustians have largely switched their tactics, so that they are now defending a religion. I was also impressed by the substantive efforts of so many people around the world to advance the cause of Revisionism.

M. P. -- Denver

FORWARD WITH CONFIDENCE

I have just received the IHR Newsletter for October with the good news that Zündel has won in Canada's Supreme Court. Please convey my congratulations and good wishes to Ernst Zündel. Like the IHR itself, he is a hero of the truth unsurpassed in our times.

Our enemies have done everything, and their worst, to stop him. They have failed, and revisionism can go forward with greater confidence than ever before that victory will be ours.

HOPE SHARED

The October Newsletter arrived today. What a pleasure to read that Ernst Zündel won big! The rest of the letter was also very good, including letters to the editor.

From other sources I get the same drift that things are breaking in Europe. In fact, all over. Maybe there is

going to be a new awakening, worldwide, to the tyranny which we have been kept under for most of the century.

We may once again see prospects for representative government on behalf of a much wider public interest. Revisionism is helping to break down the walls.

... I share the Newsletter's sense of genuine hope that the battle against the hegemony of Parasitism may yet be won.

Albert J. Eckstein -- Santa Fe Springs, Calif.

VICTIMS OF A REAL HOLOCAUST

The Japanese and Germans were victims of a real Holocaust. The fact that there is no shame over the innocent Germans and Japanese who were murdered by being burned alive says a lot about the moral character of the people who point the "righteous" finger at the Germans for the supposed Holocaust of the Jews.

F. B. -- Fort Lee, N.J.

CHANGING PUBLIC MOOD

As the enclosed articles clipped from recent issues of The Calgary Herald confirm, the public mood has -- at long last -- so turned that it is more open then ever to Revisionist views of history and politics.

G. S. -- Calgary, Alberta

RUNNING SCARED

Anyone with an ounce of sense can see -- from their rhetoric alone -- that our adversaries are running scared, and are terrified of being exposed for the liars they are.

Words cannot express the appreciation I feel for your outstanding work, which is so sorely needed in our age. Bravo!
