The Last Refuge: Living a Lie
Gideon Levy -- Haaretz (Israel)
.. .A country that constantly demands boycott from the world and also imposes boycotts itself, cannot play the victim when the same weapon is turned against
it. If the election of Hamas is cause for boycott, then occupation is a far more potent cause. The fact that Israel is living a lie - pretending that the
occupation does not exist, that it is just, temporary and unavoidable - does not make the struggle against it any less legitimate. So let us admit the truth:
The occupier deserves to be boycotted. As long as the Israelis pay no price for the occupation, the occupation will not end, and therefore the only way open
to the opponents of the occupation is to take concrete means that will make the Israelis understand that the injustice they are perpetrating comes with a
Israel's Netanyahu is Given Auschwitz Plans in
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on a visit to Germany on Thursday that one lesson Israel drew from the Holocaust was that threats to its
existence could not go unchallenged and must be "nipped in the bud". German journalists handed the Israeli leader, in Berlin for talks with Chancellor Angela
Merkel, a portfolio of 29 plans from the Auschwitz death camp discovered last year .. . Netanyahu is keen for tougher Western sanctions against Iran to halt
Tehran's nuclear program. Netanyahu said Allied powers had failed to act in time to prevent Nazis killing six million Jews in the Holocaust.
Another Hackneyed Auschwitz `Revelation'
Robert Faurisson (Nov. 2008)
The latest issue of the German mass-circulation daily Bild announces the recent discovery of new documents on Auschwitz, writing, in particular, that one of
them seems to prove the existence of a homicidal gas chamber in that camp. In Berlin, Hans-Dieter Kreikamp, head of the Federal Archives, thinks that in this
'discovery' he has found the way to silence the revisionists. In reality, there is strictly nothing new about this type of document, and the building plans
of the "gas chamber" in question (Gaskammer, fully spelt out) are those of a simple "delousing facility" (Entlausungsanlage, fully spelt out as well).
Netherlands Museum `Moon Rock' is Fake
A treasured piece at the Dutch national museum -- a supposed moon rock from the first manned lunar landing -- is nothing more than petrified wood, curators
say. It was given to former Prime Minister Willem Drees during a goodwill tour by the three Apollo-11 astronauts shortly after their moon mission in 1969.
When Mr Drees died, the rock went on display at the Amsterdam museum. At one point it was insured for around $500,000, but tests have proved it was not the
genuine article. The Rijksmuseum, which is perhaps better known for paintings by artists such as Rembrandt, says it will keep the piece as a curiosity.
Vinland Map of America No Forgery, Expert Says
The 15th century Vinland Map, the first known map to show part of America before explorer Christopher Columbus landed on the continent, is almost certainly
genuine, a Danish expert said Friday. Controversy has swirled around the map since it came to light in the 1950s, many scholars suspecting it was a hoax
meant to prove that Vikings were the first Europeans to land in North America -- a claim confirmed by a 1960 archaeological find.
New Light on the Kensington Runestone Controversy
KBJC-TV (Duluth, Minn.)
Is the "Kennsington Runestone," found in 1898 in rural Minnesota, authentic? Geologist Scott Wolter cites new evidence and insights to support the view that
the runic inscription was in fact written on the stone in 1362 by Scandinavians who had made their way far from their homeland to deep into North America.
Television news report. Runtime: 6:00 mins.
Trevor Lynch -- The Occidental Quarterly
.. . Inglourious Basterds is about a team of American terrorists, consisting of seven Jews led by a gentile, Aldo "the
Apache" Raine (played by Brad Pitt), who hails from Tennessee and claims to be part American Indian. The character is
clearly based on Tarantino himself, since he too has an Italian name, hails from Tennessee, and claims to be part
Cherokee. The mission of the Basterds is to terrify the Nazis by killing them in the most sadistic manner possible and
mutilating their corpses. The dead are scalped. The survivors have swastikas carved in their foreheads.
Most Red Ink Ever: $9 Trillion Over the
The Associated Press
In a chilling forecast, the White House is predicting a ten-year federal deficit of $9 trillion - more than the sum of
all previous deficits since America's founding. And it says by the next decade's end the national debt will equal
three-quarters of the entire U.S. economy. But before President Barack Obama can do much about it, he'll have to weather
recession aftershocks including unemployment that his advisers said Tuesday is still heading for ten percent. Overall,
White House and congressional budget analysts said in a brace of new estimates that the economy will shrink by 2.5 to
2.8 percent this year even as it begins to climb out of the recession.
Abridged Histories of the Holy
.. . In every conflict between Jews and Arabs in this country, the rather childish question arises: Who was here first?
.. .In Biblical times, most of the country belonged to the kingdoms of Judea and Israel, even though the coast belonged
to the Phoenicians in the North and the Philistines in the South. (In spite of all the frantic efforts of a hundred
years, no archaeological evidence has been found that there ever was an exodus from Egypt, a conquest of Canaan by the
Children of Israel, or a kingdom of David and Solomon.)
Deconstructing the Walls of Jericho: Who Are the Jews?
Ze'ev Herzog -- Ha'aretz magazine (Israel) -- 1999
This is what archaeologists have learned from their excavations in the Land of Israel: the Israelites were never in
Egypt, did not wander in the desert, did not conquer the land in a military campaign and did not pass it on to the 12
tribes of Israel. Perhaps even harder to swallow is that the united monarchy of David and Solomon, which is described by
the Bible as a regional power, was at most a small tribal kingdom.
First 2012 Campaign Stop: Israel
Har Bracha --- the Mount of Blessing -- is a windswept hilltop settlement of Jews overlooking the Palestinian city of
Nablus. According to biblical tradition, it is where Joshua and the children of Israel first entered the Holy Land. And,
on Aug. 18, Mike Huckabee -- a Baptist preacher, two-time governor of Arkansas and once and perhaps future Republican
presidential candidate -- received a heartfelt blessing from the local Orthodox Jewish minister.
Americans: Serfs Ruled
Paul Craig Roberts
Americans think that they have "freedom and democracy" and that politicians are held accountable by elections. The fact
of the matter is that the US is ruled by powerful interest groups who control politicians with campaign contributions.
Our real rulers are an oligarchy of financial and military/security interests and AIPAC, which influences US foreign
policy for the benefit of Israel.
For those conversant with the Bible, the twin themes of Jewish resource acquisition and deceit will be familiar .. . In
other words, illegal activities involving deception and deceit are tolerated within the Jewish community .. .The only
real crime is to inform on other Jews. The only ethical principle involved here is the age old "Is it good for the
Jews?" .. . My point here is this: Nothing has changed about Jewish behavior in recorded history. The evidence is
abundant everywhere we look, never more starkly than when it comes to competition for resources -- money in modern
Swedish Daily Publishes Second Article on `Organ
Harvesting' by Israel
Ynet News (Israel)
Despite Israel's harsh protests, Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet published a second article accusing the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] of harvesting
Palestinian organs. In the article, published Sunday, Oisn Cantwell and Urban Andersson report from the northern West Bank village of Imatin, where
19-year-old Bilal Ahmad Ghanem was killed during a clash with Israeli soldiers in 1992. Ghanem's family claims that his body was returned several
days later, wrapped in hospital bandages.
Suicide or Murder?: Kaufman's Rise and Fall of Anglo-America
Eric P. Kaufmann's The Rise and Fall of Anglo-America presents the case that Anglo-America committed what one might call "suicide by idea": White,
Anglo-Saxon Protestants were motivated to give up ethnic hegemony by their attachment to Enlightenment ideals of individualism and liberty.
Anglo-Americans simply followed these ideals of the Enlightenment to their logical conclusion, with the result that immigration was opened up to all
peoples of the world, multiculturalism became the cultural ideal, and Whites willingly allowed themselves to be displaced from their preeminent
position among the elites of business, media, politics, and the academic world.
... The most accurate way to describe Israel today is as an apartheid state ...The Palestinians are stateless and lack many of the most basic human
rights. By sharp contrast, all Jews -- whether they live in the occupied territories or in Israel -- are citizens of the state of Israel ... Nothing
else has worked. Putting massive international pressure on Israel is the only way to guarantee that the next generation of Israelis and Palestinians
-- my two boys included -- does not grow up in an apartheid regime.
Professor Calls for Boycott of Israel
A Ben-Gurion University professor called for a boycott of Israel for being an "apartheid state," causing a stir in Israel. "The most accurate way to
describe Israel today is as an apartheid state," Neve Gordon, a political science professor, wrote in an Op-Ed [opinion essay] last Friday in the
Los Angeles Times. "It is therefore clear to me that the only way to counter the apartheid trend in Israel is through massive international
pressure... I consequently have decided to support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement that was launched by Palestinian activists in July
2005 and has since garnered widespread support around the globe."
US Deficit to Soar To Nearly $1.6 Trillion
The US budget deficit will soar to almost $1.6 trillion this year, the highest on record, both the White House and Congress have warned. Fuelled by
President Obama's $787 billion stimulus package and reduced tax revenues due to the recession, it compares with a $455 billion deficit in 2008. The
White House says the deficit will grow further, predicting it will hit a cumulative $9 trillion from 2010-2019. However, it continues to expect the
US economy to start to recover this year.
`Dambusters' Attacks 'Achieved Nothing,' Thought `Bomber' Harris
The Telegraph (Britain)
It has gone down in history as the most daring RAF operation of the Second World War. With its mix of heroism and technical ingenuity, the
Dambusters Raid became a lasting symbol of Britain's gallant fight against the Nazi regime ... Yet it has now emerged that Air Marshal Sir Arthur
"Bomber" Harris, one of the chief architects of the raid, was privately scathing about its effectiveness. Research in the archives of the Harris
papers, stored in the RAF Museum at Hendon, has revealed that he privately thought the assault on German dams was a waste of men and aircraft.
Voice To Be Held in Contempt: Toben's
Steven Lewis and Peter Wertheim
In a legal first, Australia's most notorious Holocaust denier, Fredrik Toben, has been jailed for three months following the failure of his appeal
this week for contempt of court arising from breaches of Australia's anti-vilification laws. The sentence follows seven years of Toben repeatedly
ignoring court orders requiring him to remove racist material from his Adelaide Institute website ... Toben is going to jail for contempt of court. He
was ordered to remove the offending material and he didn't. He promised to remove the material and then reneged. He apologised to the court but then
recanted. True to form, he all but invited the court to lock him up.
Churchill Statue in Paris is Defaced by Protesters
Daily Mail (Britain)
French anti-war campaigners have desecrated a statue of Winston Churchill in Paris on the anniversary of the death of
Rudolf Hess. They daubed the statue's hands in red paint to signify blood and scrawled the initials RH on the plinth. It
has been 22 years since the death of Adolf Hitler's deputy, who flew to Britain at the height of the Second World War,
allegedly to try to make peace. Prime Minister Churchill had him thrown in prison in 1941 and the war continued for four
years. After the war Hess was tried at Nuremberg and jailed for life. The statue was attacked on Monday night, August
17, the day on which in 1987 Hess died at Spandau Prison in Berlin, aged 93.
Holocaust Films Keep Coming
Tom Tugend - JTA
At least once a year over the last quarter century, a respected critic will prove conclusively that films about the
Holocaust and the Nazi era have reached a saturation point and that movie and television audiences are suffering from a
terminal case of Holocaust fatigue. Ignoring such earnest arguments, Hollywood and other movie makers in the United
States and Europe regularly roll out new slates of films on these topics. This summer is no exception.
The Holocaust's Shadow Over
Bill Glucroft -- The Christian Science Monitor
... Six decades since the gravest of their tragedies, Jews have collectively yet to find a sustainable way of moving on
without forgetting the Holocaust. The inability to do so poses dire consequences for Israel and the possibility for
peace. For Israel, the Holocaust didn't end in 1945, but reconstituted itself in the country's political and social
cultures ... The situation, as it stands, strains Israel's awkward identity as both Jewish and democratic. Eventually,
Israel will be forced to choose one or the other because it will become impossible to untangle itself from an unrealized
Brothels in Nazi
Deutsche Welle (Germany)
Though not widely known, it was never really a secret that the Nazis ran brothels in many concentration camps. But never
has there been as comprehensive an account of the fact as in a new book by a German researcher. "Das KZ Bordell" (The
Concentration Camp Brothel) has been hailed as the first comprehensive account of a little-known chapter of Nazi
oppression during World War Two ... Beginning with the Austrian camp at Mauthausen in 1942, the SS opened 10 brothels, the
biggest of which was in Auschwitz in modern Poland, where as many as 21 women prisoners once worked.
Patrick J. Buchanan
... NATO's response to Obama's request for more troops has been pathetic. Europeans want to draw down the troops already
sent. And Western opinion has soured on the war ... If after eight years of fighting, the Taliban is stronger, more
capable and closer to victory than it has ever been, what will it cost in additional U.S. troops, casualties, years and
billions to turn this around? And what is so vital to us in that wilderness land worth another eight years of fighting,
bleeding and dying, other than averting the humiliation of another American defeat?... Now, whatever Obama decides, we
shall pay a hellish price for the hubris of the nation-builders.
World's Oldest Brewery Carries on 1,000 Years of Tradition
Deutsche Welle (Germany)
... Perched atop Naehrberg Hill in Freising, a small town just north of Munich, the brewery was originally a Benedictine
monastery founded in 740 AD by a monk named Korbinian. It wasn't until the year 1040, when Abbott Arnold secured the
brewing rights and license from a neighboring monastery, that beer was brewed there. Despite four fires, three plagues
and a major earthquake, they have been brewing beer non-stop for nearly a thousand years. Not only is Weihenstephan the
oldest brewery in the world, it has a tradition of being a center for research about brewing and brewing technology.
Wartime Code-Breaking and an `Unknown Holocaust': Irving, Weber Address Upbeat IHR Meeting
Institute for Historical Review
At an upbeat IHR meeting on Saturday evening, July 25, best-selling British author David Irving and American historian
Mark Weber tackled important aspects of twentieth-century history in two informed and well delivered talks. Among the
more than 60 men and women who filled the hotel meeting room in southern California were engineers, businessmen,
attorneys, writers, students, community activists and educators, as well as an unusually large number of younger people.
Attendees commented on the gathering's buoyant and purposeful spirit, and several remarked that this was the most
successful IHR meeting in years.
An `Unknown Holocaust' and the
Hijacking of History
We hear a lot about terrible crimes committed by Germans during World War II, but we hear very little about crimes
committed against Germans. Germany's defeat in May 1945, and the end of World War II in Europe, did not bring an end to
death and suffering for the vanquished German people. Instead the victorious Allies ushered in a horrible new era of
destruction, looting, starvation, rape, "ethnic cleansing," and mass killing ... Even though this "unknown holocaust" is
ignored in our motion pictures and classrooms, and by our political leaders, the facts are well established. Historians
are in basic agreement about the scale of the human catastrophe, which has been laid out in a number of detailed books.
Elections Won't Bring Peace to Afghanistan
This week's presidential election in Afghanistan will be an elaborate piece of political theater designed to show
increasingly uneasy Western voters that progress is being made in the war-torn nation after seven years of US-led
occupation ... When the Soviets occupied Afghanistan from 1979-1989, they held fairer elections than the US-run votes. Of
course, the Soviet's man, Najibullah, won, but at least dissention was voiced. In Washington's stage-managed Afghan
votes, real opposition is excluded. The US used the same trick in Iraq's rigged elections. Ironically, the US and its
NATO allies have been blasting Iran for lapses in its recent presidential election while stage-managing far more
questionable elections in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Germans Question Afghan War
In a joint action with Afghan forces, 300 German soldiers used heavy firepower for the first time in a bid to flush out
Taliban insurgents who are moving into the region. Back home, meanwhile, Chancellor Angela Merkel last month awarded
four soldiers the Bundeswehr's new cross of honour. It was the first time since the end of World War II that Germany had
awarded medals for bravery - a remarkable change in attitude considering post-war Germany's traditional wariness of
military symbols. But although the German government looks set to get tough on the battlefield, popular opinion is
heading in the opposite direction. German military involvement abroad is extremely unpopular back home - and becoming
more disliked all the time.
Top Swedish Newspaper Says
Israel's Military Kills Palestinians for Their Organs
A leading Swedish newspaper reported this week that Israeli soldiers are abducting Palestinians in order to steal their
organs, a claim that prompted furious condemnation and accusations of anti-Semitic blood libel from a rival publication.
"They plunder the organs of our sons," read the headline in Sweden's largest daily newspaper, the left-leaning
Aftonbladet, which devoted a double spread in its cultural section to the article ... Bostrm's article makes a link to
the recent exposure of an alleged crime syndicate in New Jersey.
`Mein Kampf' Sells for 21,000 Pounds at Auction
A rare signed copy of Hitler's Mein Kampf has sold for 21,000 pounds at an auction in Shropshire [England]. A Russian
telephone bidder at the Mullock's auction at Ludlow Racecourse bought the book, which was given by Hitler to a fellow
prison inmate. The work, which translates as My Struggle, became the bible of National Socialism in Hitler's Third
Reich. It was sold on Thursday alongside a signed self-portrait of the Nazi leader, which fetched 12,300 pounds.
Zwi Migdal: Story of a Criminal
Zwi Migdal, also known as Zvi Migdal, was a criminal organization of Jewish gangsters that specialized in worldwide
prostitution and trafficking of women who came from the shtetls in Eastern Europe ... The Zwi Migdal organization reached
its peak in the 1920s when some 430 rufianos, or pimps, controlled 2,000 brothels with 4,000 women in Argentina alone.
Children Accept Hollywood Distortions of History
The Telegraph (Britain)
Hollywood's habit of playing with historical facts is leading schoolchildren to get it wrong too - even if they read the
true story in classrooms, a new academic study shows. Researchers have found that film is an incredibly powerful tool
for teaching children about the past which can greatly increase historical knowledge. However, it is so powerful that if
the facts are wrong, pupils are more likely to believe them even if they are told otherwise by text books or teachers ...
Hollywood stars from Tom Cruise to Denzel Washington as well as British actors like Anthony Hopkins have made films
about historical events with glaring factual errors, it said.
A French Revelation, or The Burning Bush: Bush's Religious Explanation for Iraq War
James A. Haught
Incredibly, President George W. Bush told French President Jacques Chirac in early 2003 that Iraq must be invaded to
thwart Gog and Magog, the Bible's satanic agents of the Apocalypse. Honest. This isn't a joke. The president of the
United States, in a top-secret phone call to a major European ally, asked for French troops to join American soldiers in
attacking Iraq as a mission from God. Now out of office, Chirac recounts that the American leader appealed to their
"common faith" (Christianity) and told him: "Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East.... The biblical prophecies are
being fulfilled.... This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people's enemies
before a New Age begins."
German Court Upholds `Holocaust Denial' Sentence
The Associated Press
A German federal court on Tuesday upheld the Holocaust denial conviction of a founding member of a left-wing terrorist
group turned neo-Nazi, saying he must serve his six-year sentence. The Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe threw out
Horst Mahler's appeal of the Munich state court ruling made in February. Mahler, a founder of the Red Army Faction in
1970, was convicted of incitement for posting videos denying the Holocaust on the Internet and distributing CDs
promoting anti-Jewish hatred and violence. Denial of the Nazi Holocaust is a crime in Germany.
Nazi Slogans in English Are Legal, German Court Rules
The Associated Press
A federal appeals court ruled Thursday that people can be prosecuted for displaying Nazi slogans in Germany only if they
are in the German language. The Federal Court of Justice overturned a lower court's ruling convicting a neo-Nazi of
transporting a shipment of 100 T-shirts with the slogan, "Blood and Honour," written in English. The slogan is a direct
translation of the German "Blut und Ehre," a motto of the Hitler Youth. The display of Nazi symbols or slogans is
forbidden in Germany, but the court ruled that the ban only applied to those written in the German language. It sent the
case back to the lower court and noted that the defendant could still be found guilty, because the shirts also carried
banned Nazi symbols.
Americans Working Harder For Less Pay
Feel like you're working a lot harder these days, putting in longer hours for the same pay -- or even less? The latest
round of government data on worker productivity indicates that you probably are. The Labor Department said Tuesday that
the American work force produced, at an annual rate, 6.4 percent more of the goods they made and services they provided
in the second quarter of this year compared to a year ago. At the same time, "unit labor costs" -- the amount employers
paid for all that extra work -- fell by 5.8 percent. The jump in productivity was higher than expected; the cut in labor
costs more than double expectations.
English-Speaking Pupils Are Minority in London's Inner-City Schools
Daily Mail (Britain)
Children who speak English as their first language are now a minority in inner-city London primary schools, official
figures showed yesterday. Youngsters with a different mother tongue form a majority in primaries in 13 out of 33 London
boroughs and in nearby Slough. In inner London, 54 per cent of primary pupils and 48.5 per cent in secondary
institutions do not speak English as their first language. This amounts to an astonishing 159,340 children. Across the
country, English is a foreign language to more than one in seven primary youngsters - almost half a million.
Israel's Hidden Shame of Its Early Years
The Guardian (Britain) -- 2003
For 54 years the fate of a young Bedouin girl who disappeared in the Negev desert was relegated to rumour and a single
entry in the diary of David Ben-Gurion, the prime minister of the fledgling Israeli state. "It was decided and carried
out: they washed her, cut her hair, raped her and killed her," he wrote. After that the case became one of the state's
earliest secrets, and no more than hearsay passed between soldiers. Now the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz has used
previously classified army documents to reveal the full story of what Mr Ben-Gurion called a "horrific atrocity".
Hitler Did Shake Hands With Black Olympic Runner Owens, Says Witness
Daily Mail (Britain)
It has long been regarded as the greatest sporting snub in history - when Adolf Hitler stormed out of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin because Germany had been humiliated by a black man Or so the story goes. But now a veteran sports reporter in Germany has come forward to claim that, though Hitler did indeed leave the stadium after the race, it was not before shaking Owens' hand Mischner claimed Owens showed him the photograph and told him: 'That was one of my most beautiful moments.' Mischner said: 'It was taken behind the honour stand and so not captured by the world's press. But I saw it, I saw him shaking Hitler's hand Owens later said he was treated better in Germany than in America where blacks faced segregation.
Biggest Drop in Federal Tax Revenue Since 1932
The Associated Press
The recession is starving the government of tax revenue, just as the president and Congress are piling a major expansion of health care and other programs on the nation's plate and struggling to find money to pay the tab. The numbers could hardly be more stark: Tax receipts are on pace to drop 18 percent this year, the biggest single-year decline since the Great Depression, while the federal deficit balloons to a record $1.8 trillion. Other figures in an Associated Press analysis underscore the recession's impact: Individual income tax receipts are down 22 percent from a year ago. Corporate income taxes are down 57 percent.
Soaring Deficit May Defy Forecasts
Stagnant unemployment, shrinking tax revenue and a struggling economy threaten to quadruple the size of last year's federal budget deficit, raising more questions about the timing of costly proposals to overhaul health care. As the White House and Congressional Budget Office (CBO) prepare to release new deficit estimates this month, several economists say the news is likely to be as bad as or worse than forecasts.
California Prepares to Release 40,000 Prison Inmates
The Wall Street Journal
California state and local officials, already reeling from budget cuts and public-safety layoffs, are struggling with a federal order to release about 40,000 inmates to reduce prison overcrowding and bracing for the impact on their communities. State officials have said they will appeal the decision, but as a contingency are cobbling together proposals to comply with the order. At the same time, cash-strapped local governments in places such as Los Angeles and Fresno are grappling with how to monitor and support thousands of released inmates at a time of scaled-down police forces and underfunded social-services programs.
Israel Seeks Ways to Silence Human Rights Groups
In a bid to staunch the flow of damaging evidence of war crimes committed during Israels winter assault on Gaza, the Israeli government has launched a campaign to clamp down on human rights groups, both in Israel and abroad. It has begun by targeting one of the worlds leading rights organisations, the US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW), as well as a local group of dissident army veterans, Breaking the Silence, which last month published the testimonies of 26 combat soldiers who served in Gaza. Additionally, according to the Israeli media, the government is planning a much more aggressive stance towards human rights groups working to help the Palestinians.
Mass Graves of World War II Bring Poles, Germans Together
The Associated Press
Germans and Poles are laying ghosts of World War II to rest this week more than 2,000 of them. At a ceremony Friday, they will rebury the bones that were discovered last fall in a mass grave at the foot of this northern Polish city's medieval castle, setting aside the grievances that linger from the war and often bedevil relations between the two countries. But the uncertainties about who the dead were and who killed them may never be resolved. All that authorities can say with some assuredness is that they were probably German civilians who died in the ferocious final months of the war, in a city with a shared Polish-German past that dates back more than 700 years.
In Australia, Holocaust `Denier Toben is Jailed as Appeal Fails
Holocaust denier Fredrick Toben has been taken into custody to serve a three-month jail term over publishing offensive material on the internet. The 64-year-old was taken from the Federal Court in Adelaide by Australian Federal Police today after losing his appeal against his conviction for contempt of court. The Full Court of the Federal Court also ruled that his jail term, originally imposed in May this year, was in no way excessive.
The ADLs Double Standard On `Hate Crimes'
Robert Stark -- Examiner.com
The ADL [Anti-Defamation League] Applauds Senate's Passage of Hate Crime Legislation. The Bill which is known as the The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act, passed the Senate 63-28, and is supported by the President who will sign it into law. Organizations such as the ADL have aggressively promoted hate crime legislation. These organizations have endorsed Europe and Canada's policies on prosecuting what they deem as hate speech. The ADL openly advocates for their model ant-hate law which has been adopted by many states.
Dismantling the Empire
However ambitious President Barack Obama's domestic plans, one unacknowledged issue has the potential to destroy any reform efforts he might launch. Think of it as the 800-pound gorilla in the American living room: our longstanding reliance on imperialism and militarism in our relations with other countries and the vast, potentially ruinous global empire of bases that goes with it. The failure to begin to deal with our bloated military establishment and the profligate use of it in missions for which it is hopelessly inappropriate will, sooner rather than later, condemn the United States to a devastating trio of consequences: imperial overstretch, perpetual war, and insolvency, leading to a likely collapse similar to that of the former Soviet Union.
Catherine Lutz -- New Statesman (Britain)
The 44th president of the United States was elected amid hopes that he would roll back his countrys global dominance. Today, he is commander-in-chief of an unprecedented network of military bases that is still expanding The global reach of the US military today is unprecedented and unparalleled. Officially, more than 190,000 troops and 115,000 civilian employees are massed in approximately 900 military facilities in 46 countries and territories (the unofficial figure is far greater). The US military owns or rents 795,000 acres of land, with 26,000 buildings and structures, valued at $146 billion. The bases bristle with an inventory of weapons whose worth is measured in the trillions and whose killing power could wipe out all life on earth several times over.
Norway Honors Famed Pro-Hitler Writer
The Independent (Britain)
Knut Hamsun was lucky to escape execution for collaborating with the Nazis. Now, almost 60 years after his death, Norway has finally honoured his contribution to literature and even put his face on a stamp / All this week, Norway is feting a writer who was lucky to escape being shot for his shameless collaboration with the Nazis. Knut Hamsun was either, according to taste, one of the greatest figures in world literature, or a vile old man with a head full of nasty ideas who betrayed his country A week after Hitler committed suicide, Hamsun wrote an obituary praising him as "a warrior for mankind", "a prophet of the gospel of justice for all nations" and "a reformer of the highest sort".
The Great Hiroshima Cover-Up
In the weeks following the atomic attacks on Japan 64 years ago, and then for decades afterward, the United States engaged in airtight suppression of all film shot in Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the bombings. This included footage shot by U.S. military crews and Japanese newsreel teams. In addition, for many years, all but a handful of newspaper photographs were seized or prohibited. The public did not see any of the newsreel footage for 25 years, and the U.S. military film remained hidden for nearly four decades.
Atomic Bombing of Japan Was Right Decision, Most Americans Believe
The Associated Press
A majority of Americans surveyed believe dropping atomic bombs on Japan during World War II was the right thing to do, but support was weaker among Democrats, women, younger voters and minority voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll. The poll, released Tuesday, found 61 percent of the more than 2,400 American voters questioned believe the U.S. did the right thing. Twenty-two percent called it wrong and 16 percent were undecided. The first bomb was dropped Aug. 6, 1945, on Hiroshima. An estimated 140,000 people were killed instantly or died within a few months.
Canadas `Human Rights Commission is `Ethically Challenged
Russ Hiebert -- National Post (Canada)
Recently, Canadian Human Rights Commission chief Jennifer Lynch criticized me for relying on "one source that is full of misinformation," in my parliamentary study of the CHRC. It may surprise Ms. Lynch to learn that the source of my "misinformation" is her own commission and its companion body, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal The transcripts of tribunal hearings provide telling evidence of the wayward approach the commission's investigators take in prosecuting their cases. Recent hearings, such as the Marc Lemire case, have revealed that current CHRC investigator Dean Steacy and former CHRC investigator Richard Warman regularly posted neo-Nazi diatribes under assumed names on white supremacist web-sites.
Authorities Reject Plan for New German Edition of `Mein Kampf
Plans by German scholars to reprint Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf"" as an academic treatise were rejected by the state copyright holders, who said a new edition of the book could fuel support for far-right groups. The Bavarian authorities this week reaffirmed a 64-year-old ban on the book after the Munich-based Institute of Contemporary History, or IFZ, applied for permission to reprint the work. State officials said that extremist groups could have legally promoted the book if the ban had been lifted.
Israeli Settlers Are `Wrecking Peace Process, Say British Officials
The Times (Britain)
Britain has accused Israel of allowing extremist Jewish settlers to disrupt attempts at relaunching the peace process after police evicted more than 50 Palestinians from their homes in Jerusalem. As Jewish settlers moved into the Palestinian homes, the British consulate said it was appalled by the evictions, which took place a few hundred yards from the diplomatic mission, after an Israeli court decided in favour of the settlers. Israels claim that the imposition of extremist Jewish settlers into this ancient Arab neighbourhood is a matter for the courts or the municipality is entirely unacceptable, the consulate said in a statement.
Obama, Netanyahu and the Settlements
Uri Avnery (Israel)
Many Israelis, very many, hope that Barack Obama will do for them what seems impossible without him: bring them peace. They have despaired of our political system, of both the coalition and the opposition, of both Right and Left. They are convinced that only an outside force can realize this hope. If indeed Obama does clash with Netanyahu over his refusal to freeze the settlements in the West Bank and his insistence on continuing to build in East Jerusalem, it is for Obamas victory that many Israelis will be praying. They know that in this battle, it is not Netanyahu but Obama who represents the true interests of Israel. The question is whether Obama has the power to follow through, as no preceding president since Dwight Eisenhower has done.
Who Was Thomas Paine?
Brendan ONeill -- BBC News
It's 200 years since the British-born "father of the American revolution" died. His words also helped shape modern Britain and France and yet few people know much about him at all. "Possibly the most influential writer in modern human history" In January 1776 he published a short pamphlet that earned him the title The Father of the American Revolution. Titled simply, Common Sense, the work has been described by the Pulitzer-winning historian Gordon S Wood as "the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire [American] revolutionary period". It put the case for democracy, against the monarchy, and for American independence from British rule. It became a sensation, selling 120,000 copies in the first three months.
Rabbi Described as `Thug Arrested as Human Organ Dealer
The Brooklyn man arrested for organ trafficking in connection with a massive federal corruption and money-laundering sting is described a "thug" who reportedly pulled a gun on kidney "donors" who were getting cold feet, according to a Daily News report Friday. Levy-Izhak Rosenbaum allegedly bought kidneys from impoverished people overseas for $10,000 and turned them around for $160,000 in the US, according to the newspaper.
Sweden Refuses to Cooperate in `Holocaust Denial Inquiry
Sweden has refused to summon a journalist for questioning in a possible German prosecution of Richard Williamson, the fundamentalist Catholic clergyman who caused a furor by questioning the scale of the Holocaust. Prosecutors in the German city of Regensburg admitted Thursday the inquiry was effectively stalled. Williamson, a British leader of the Society of St Pius X (SSPX), gave an interview last year to a Swedish TV journalist near the German city, where the SSPX, an advocate of old-style Catholicism, has a seminary. A re-broadcast of the interview this year, just after Pope Benedict XVI ended the excommunication of Williamson and three other SSPX leaders, triggered a storm worldwide.
Mourning the Death of Handwriting
People born after 1980 tend to have a distinctive style of handwriting: a little bit sloppy, a little bit childish and almost never in cursive. The knee-jerk explanation is that computers are responsible for our increasingly illegible scrawl, but Steve Graham, a special-education and literacy professor at Vanderbilt University, says that's not the case. The simple fact is that kids haven't learned to write neatly because no one has forced them to. "Writing is just not part of the national agenda anymore," he says.
It Cant Happen Here
Patrick J. Buchanan
Without the assent of her people, America is being converted from a Christian country, nine in ten of whose people traced their roots to Europe as late as the time of JFK, into a multiracial, multiethnic, multilingual, multicultural Tower of Babel not seen since the late Roman Empire. The city farthest along the path is Los Angeles, famous worldwide for the number, variety, and size of its ethnic and racial street gangs.
The Weight of Tradition: Why Judaism is Not Like Other Religions
... Judaism is not just "another religion." Its unique among the worlds major religions. The core values and ethos of Judaism are markedly unlike those of Christianity, Islam, and the other great faiths ... A core message of the Hebrew scriptures is that Jews are a divinely "chosen" people -- a unique community distinct from the rest of humanity ... The seemingly intractable Middle East conflict is more than just a problem of Zionism or politics, or a dispute over land. Israels often arrogant policies, and especially its inhumane treatment of non-Jews, have roots in centuries-old attitudes that are laid out in ancient Jewish religious writings.
Does the Old Testament Foster Corruption?
D. M. Murdock -- Examiner.com
The recent arrest and indictment of several -- 19 according to one source -- members of Orthodox Jewish communities in New York and New Jersey on racketeering, money-laundering and organ-smuggling charges reminds us that this is not the first time Orthodox Jews have allegedly engaged in financial and other crimes ... In this regard, it is clear from biblical traditions and dictates that "chosen people" are to be rewarded by God for their piety by being given the booty of "the nations," i.e., non-Jewish lands. Consider the following scriptures from the Old Testament part of the Bible, called in Judaism the "Tanakh" -- which, as in Christianity, is considered by Orthodox Jews to be "God's Word"
New U.S.-Israeli Crime Ring Detailed
The New York Times
An American-Israeli crime ring conspired to defraud United States tax authorities of tens of millions of dollars for at least five years, according to Israeli and American court documents filed Monday. The suspects filed thousands of fraudulent requests for tax refunds in the names of prisoners in federal penitentiaries, without the prisoners knowledge, according to an indictment field in Chicago. They then laundered the money through Israeli bank accounts, the authorities said. Two Americans and seven Israelis went to a Tel Aviv court for a hearing on Monday in connection with the case.
Typhus: How Lice Thwarted Napoleon's Invasion of Russia
Der Spiegel (Germany)
His invasion of Russia failed miserably, leaving a trail of corpses from Moscow all the way to Paris. In a new book, one historian blames not the wintry march but the spread of "war plague" -- typhus -- through Napoleon's Grand Army. The fate of Napoleon's Grand Army was sealed long before the first shot was fired ... That's the claim of Stephan Talty, the American author who reconstructs the medical history of Napoleon's doomed Russian campaign in his new book "The Illustrious Dead: The Terrifying Story of How Typhus Killed Napoleon's Greatest Army." Talty carefully documents why 400,000 men never made it home.
High Hopes for Obama Presidency Are Fading
The Associated Press
That was fast. The hope and optimism that washed over the country in the opening months of Barack Obama's presidency are giving way to harsh realities. An Associated Press-GfK Poll shows that a majority of Americans are back to thinking that the country is headed in the wrong direction after a fleeting period in which more thought it was on the right track.
Rein In the Human Rights Bureaucracy
Peter Worthington -- Toronto Sun (Canada)
... To many (including me) the CHRC [Canadian Human Rights Commission] is unnecessary and a direct threat to free speech -- a kangaroo court more intent on lynching (no pun intended) than seeking truth or justice. CHRC investigators likely see themselves as crusaders, exposing suspect or dangerous organizations and gathering evidence to protect society. Hardly. Canadian democracy is not threatened by white supremacists or anti-Semites. Democratic countries generally show repugnance toward extremism. One gets the feeling the CRHC sets up targets to knock down, thereby justifying its existence.
Jewish Stoolie is `Dead to His Daddy: Renounced for Busting `Corrupt Jews
New York Post
... Israel Dwek -- the father of Solomon "Shlomo" Dwek, who helped the feds nail three New Jersey mayors and several rabbis in Brooklyn last week -- plans to sit shiva for his son because he is so disgusted with his turning on other Jews, reported the Web site PolitickerNJ.com. Shiva is the traditional Jewish mourning period held after a family member dies. The father -- citing "the Talmudic Law of Moser that prohibits a Jew from informing on another Jew to a non-Jew" -- renounced his son from the pulpit at his synagogue in Deal, NJ, on Saturday, the site said. Israel Dwek is a revered leader of the Sephardic Jewish community in the wealthy enclave.
Russia Acts Against 'False' History
What is worrying Russia? Why is the country convinced that it is the victim of a campaign to make it look bad? President Dmitry Medvedev recently announced the setting up of a commission to counter the falsification of history. He said this was becoming increasingly "severe, evil, and aggressive" This is what appears to anger today's Russian historical establishment: accounts of Red Army crimes on the march to Berlin; assertions by the Baltic countries and others in Eastern Europe that Soviet forces came as occupiers as much as liberators; any suggestion that Stalin's Soviet Union and Nazi Germany were anything but complete opposites and bitter enemies.
Controversy Over Plan for Museum of Third Reich Program
The Telegraph (Britain)
Germany's far-right NPD party is on a collision course with the government over plans to build a museum celebrating the Third Reich's "Strength Through Joy" movement, which organized leisure activities for the masses. Jrgen Rieger, the vice-president of the party that seeks to ban all immigration and sever all ties with the EU, has submitted plans to authorities in Wolfsburg home to car giant Volkswagen for the museum intended to "show the people what this organization did and what it meant." But critics have accused Mr. Rieger of using the museum as a way to spread pro-Nazi propaganda.
Israel Cuts 1948 `Catastrophe From Textbooks
The Associated Press
The Israeli government will remove references to what Palestinians call the ''catastrophe'' of Israel's creation from textbooks for Arab schoolchildren, the education minister said Wednesday. The reference to ''al-naqba,'' the Arabic word catastrophe, as Palestinians call their defeat and exile in the war over Israel's 1948 creation, was inserted by a dovish Israeli education minister in 2007 Israeli Arab lawmaker Hana Sweid accused the government of "naqba denial." "It's a major attack on the identity of the Palestinian Arab citizens of the state of Israel, on their memories and their adherence to their identity," he told the Associated Press.
Controversy Continues Over Honoring of Norwegian Writer Hamsun
Norway's honoring of novelist and Nazi-sympathizer Knut Hamsun "does not in any way affect" the country's chairmanship of the international task force for Holocaust education, the body's head yesterday said. But the Raul Wallenberg Foundation told Norway's queen that in light of the chairmanship, Hamsun's commemoration was "incomprehensible." Last month Haaretz quoted prominent anti-Semitism campaigners who said Norway was not suited to chair the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research (ITF), due to its commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Hamsun's birth this year. Hamsun was a Nobel Prize winner who publicly supported Nazism.
Jewish Group Sues Amazon Over 'Nazi' Books
The Telegraph (Britain)
The American Jewish Committee said on Friday it was suing the German branch of online retailer Amazon for selling books which it said questioned the Holocaust and "trivialised" the Nazis. According to AJC research, around 50 works including "Der Auschwitz-Mythos Legende oder Wirklichkeit ("The Auschwitz Myth Legend or Reality") by Wilhelm Staglich were on sale on Amazon.de this month. Some of these books, the AJC said, were classified by the German authorities as being unsuitable for under-18s.
Can The Economy Recover?
Paul Craig Roberts
There is no economy left to recover. The US manufacturing economy was lost to offshoring and free trade ideology. It was replaced by a mythical New Economy. The real crisis awaits us. It is the crisis of high unemployment, of stagnant and declining real wages confronted with rising prices from the printing of money to pay the governments bills and from the dollars loss of exchange value. Suddenly, Wal-Mart prices will look like Nieman Marcus prices.
Duranty and `The Holocaust: Distortions of The New York Times
Roger L. Simon -- PJTV -- Video
How Americas paper of record, The New York Times, covered up the Soviet state-organized famine of 1932, by its Moscow correspondent Walter Duranty, and during World War II misinformed readers about killings of Jews in Europe. Runtime: 6:52 mins.
The Kosher Nostra is Trapped at Last
Chris Stephen -- The Scotsman (Britain)
Money laundering, organ smuggling, racketeering and $97,000 hidden in a cornflakes box all allegations levelled this week when the FBI announced one of its biggest-ever organised crime busts in New Jersey. But this bust came with a difference: the ring-leaders are orthodox rabbis. The five Sephardic rabbis, all from orthodox Syrian Jewish communities in New Jersey and Brooklyn, are accused of selling kidneys and laundering tens of millions of dollars through fake charities This is the second shock to New York's Jewish community, still reeling from the arrest in January of financier Bernie Madoff who used his connections among Jewish philanthropists and investors to fleece them in a $50 billion scam.
Most Americans Oppose US Role in Afghanistan and Iraq Wars
The Associated Press
A majority of Americans oppose both the war in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq, though the war in Afghanistan is a little more popular 34 percent favor the war in Iraq and 63 percent are opposed; 44 percent favor the war in Afghanistan and 53 percent are opposed 56 percent of Americans approve of President Barack Obamas handling of the situation in Iraq, and 55 percent approve of his handling of Afghanistan. Both numbers are down just slightly since April The AP-GfK Poll was conducted July 16-20.
The `Trick of Smearing Critics As `Anti-Semitic
Democracy Now - Video
Shulamit Aloni, former Israeli government minister, speaks with Amy Goodman about how Jews and Israelis silence critics by using the trick of calling them anti-Semitic. Its a trick. We always use it, she says. Runtime: 2:22 mins.
Israeli Orders Display of Hitler Photo in Embassies and Consulates
ABC News (Australia)
Israel's firebrand foreign minister has ordered that his country's embassies and consulates around the world display a photograph of Adolf Hitler with a Palestinian cleric. It is part of a government push for the construction of a Jewish residential development in East Jerusalem. The United States does not want the development to go ahead, but Israel is defying the pressure and making a point of showing that the land in Jerusalem's Arab quarter once belonged to the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem a known Nazi collaborator. In 1941 Hitler was photographed in Berlin with the then Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini.
Here Comes the Next Fiscal Crisis
Alan J. Auerbach and William G. Gale
The U.S. confronts not one but two economic challenges: Its worst recession since the Depression and a growing imbalance between federal spending and revenues that makes its underlying fiscal policy unsustainable Over the next decade or so, even once we recover from the recession, federal revenues will fall far short of federal spending. Under the policies laid out in the Obama administration's recent budget, for example, the annual deficit will be 5.5% of GDP by 2019, an exceptionally high share in normal times. In the meantime, the national debt will accumulate so rapidly that it will stand at 82% of GDP, its highest mark since 1948, when we were paying off our war debts. And we will be looking ahead to even larger deficits and faster debt accumulation.
Gambling With Peace: How US Bingo Dollars Are Funding Israeli Settlements
The Guardian (Britain)
... The profits from the nightly ritual of numbers-calling fund what critics describe as a form of ethnic cleansing by extremist organisations. Each dollar spent on bingo by the mostly Latino residents of Hawaiian Gardens, on the outskirts of Los Angeles, helps fund Jewish settlements on Palestinian land in some of the most sensitive areas of occupied East Jerusalem, particularly the Muslim quarter of the old city, and West Bank towns such as Hebron where the Israeli military has forced Arabs out of their properties in their thousands. Over the past 20 years, the bingo hall has funnelled tens of millions of dollars in to what its opponents including rabbis serving the Hawaiian Gardens area describe as an ideologically-driven strategy to grab land for Israel, as well as contributing to influential American groups and thinktanks backing Israel's more hawkish governments.
For Many Britons Who Emigrated, the `American Dream Ended Early
The Telegraph (Britain)
A quarter of all pilgrims who travelled to the New World returned to Britain after just a few years, a new report shows. Disease, an unforgiving climate and a stagnant economy in Massachusetts, forced thousands to make the dangerous three-month boat journey back to the UK, their dreams of a new life unfulfilled. Dr Susan Hardman Moore, of the University of Edinburgh's School of Divinity, has researched the immigration records of ordinary people who fled religious persecution before the English Civil War, along with their wills, diaries and letters Among those who quit the country and sailed home were members of the colony's elite, including a third of religious ministers and half of the graduates from the newly established Harvard University.
Saving Lives by Saving Money
Alison Weir -- If Americans Knew
Imagine you could help people abroad by keeping your money home. Imagine you could help bring peace to the Middle East, build a safer world and alleviate massive misery. Imagine you could begin to eliminate the requirement for long airport lines, the justification for frisking old ladies, the alleged need to discard our most cherished principles in a quest for security against an ill-defined enemy. Imagine you could save America. You can by ending our $7 million per day gift to Israel. Following are six reasons to end this enormous foreign expenditure
Adding Up the True Costs of Two Wars
Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes
The conflict that began in 2003 is far from over for us, and the next chapter -- confronting a Taliban that reasserted itself in Afghanistan while the U.S. was sidetracked in Iraq -- will be expensive and bloody This wartime spending undoubtedly has been a major contributor to our present economic collapse. The U.S. has waged an expensive war as if it required little or no economic sacrifice, funding the conflict by massive borrowing. As we've observed in the past, you can't spend $3 trillion on a reckless foreign war and not feel the pain at home.
Achievement Gap Still Splits White, Black Students
The Associated Press
Despite unprecedented efforts to improve minority achievement in the past decade, the gap between black and white students remains frustratingly wide, according to an Education Department report released Tuesday. There is good news in the report: Reading and math scores are improving for black students across the country. But because white students are also improving, the disparity between blacks and whites has lessened only slightly. On average, the gap narrowed by about seven points from 1992 to 2007, so that black students scored about 28 points behind white students on a 500-point scale.
Mass Grave of Stalin-Era Victims Found in Belarus
Soviet bullets were found with the remains at Glubokoye, a village which had been in Poland but fell into Soviet hands in 1939. A youth group discovered the remains earlier this week, reports say. Local historians said the victims had most probably been shot by the NKVD secret police between 1939 and 1941. "I think we can all but rule out any suggestion that these people were shot by the Germans during the occupation," historian Igor Kuznetsov told Reuters.
Top Ten Misconceptions About the Vikings
When most of us think of vikings, we see horn-helmeted violent blond men raping and pillaging everything in sight. But, in fact, many of these images are misconceived as you are about to find out. The Vikings lived from the late eighth to the early eleventh century and their relatively short history had had a massive impact on western society.
Ukraine Ban for 'Explicit' Bruno
Bruno has fallen foul of the censors in Ukraine, who claim Sacha Baron Cohen's raucous new comedy could "damage the morality" of its citizens. The Ukrainian ministry of culture told local film distributor Sinergia it had "decided to ban all showings of this film on Ukrainian territory". Bruno, it said, "contains unjustified showing of genital organs". In addition, the film depicts what the ministry calls "homosexual perversions" in an "explicitly realist manner". Rated 18 in the UK, Bruno sees Cohen playing a gay Austrian fashion reporter who travels to the US to make his name.
Shaking His Fist At the Parisian Sky : 'Normance' by Cline
Thomas McGonigle -- Los Angeles Times
The last of Cline's novels to be translated into English, "Normance" is now available in a vibrant version that captures the shattering reality of what it was like to live in Paris during bombings by Allied airplanes in 1944. Cline's "Journey to the End of the Night" was read and reread by Jack Kerouac, Kurt Vonnegut and Philip Roth, giving them the needed permission to find their distinct ways into the world. "Journey" is a fierce, uncompromising depiction of much of Cline's experience of being wounded while serving on the front lines during World War I, his postwar life in Africa and then in the hell of late-1920s industrial America.
Israel Employs Pro-Israeli Internet `Talkbackers
Dora Kishinevski -- Calcalist
After they became an inseparable part of the service provided by public-relations companies and advertising agencies, paid Internet talkbackers are being mobilized in the service in the [Israeli] State. The Foreign Ministry [of Israel] is in the process of setting up a team of students and demobilized soldiers who will work around the clock writing pro-Israeli responses on Internet websites all over the world, and on services like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.
The Head Nazi-Hunters Trail of Lies
Guy Walters -- The Sunday Times (Britain)
Since the early 1960s Simon Wiesenthals name has become synonymous with Nazi hunting. His standing is that of a secular saint His reputation is built on sand, however. He was a liar and a bad one at that. From the end of the second world war to the end of his life in 2005, he would lie repeatedly about his supposed hunt for Eichmann as well as his other Nazi-hunting exploits. He would also concoct outrageous stories about his war years and make false claims about his academic career. There are so many inconsistencies between his three main memoirs and between those memoirs and contemporaneous documents, that it is impossible to establish a reliable narrative from them. Wiesenthals scant regard for the truth makes it possible to doubt everything he ever wrote or said.
Simon Wiesenthal: Fraudulent `Nazi Hunter
Mark Weber (1995)
Wiesenthal's reputation as a moral authority is undeserved. The man whom The Washington Post has called the "Holocaust's Avenging Angel" has a little known but well-documented record of reckless disregard for truth. He has lied about his own wartime experiences, misrepresented his postwar "Nazi-hunting" achievements, and has spread vile falsehoods about alleged German atrocities.
Israeli Navy Prepares for Possible Attack on Iran
The Times (Britain)
Two Israeli missile class warships have sailed through the Suez Canal ten days after a submarine capable of launching a nuclear missile strike, in preparation for a possible attack on Iran's nuclear facilities. The deployment into the Red Sea, confirmed by Israeli officials, was a clear signal that Israel was able to put its strike force within range of Iran at short notice. It came before long-range exercises by the Israeli air force in America later this month and the test of a missile defence shield at a US missile range in the Pacific Ocean.
David Irving Speaks in Portland: A First-Person Report
Irving was great - in much better form than he was in Eugene last year. I am not a historian, but I do know about two things he talked about: code-breaking and postwar UK government secrecy. In all sorts of details, Irving was scrupulous Irving put forward his latest theory, that Himmler hid the Holocaust from Hitler, with a few telegrams which appeared to back it up. I think this is rather unlikely, to put it mildly. But remember that Jimmy Carter didn't know what the CIA were doing in Central America. Carter was responsible for crimes committed on his watch, and so was Hitler. Irving agreed with me when I asked him about this. So he's not trying to exonerate Hitler.
Misreading Irans Unrest
Alastair Crooke -- Los Angeles Times
The troubles that have followed the Iranian presidential elections have been generally misread by the Western media and policymakers. What we are witnessing is not a frustrated East European-style "color revolution"; nor is presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi's movement an uprising of liberal, Westernized sympathizers against the principles of the Iranian Revolution -- although there are surely some who are hostile to the revolution among his supporters. Rather, what we have been seeing is a power struggle -- between factions of the "Old Guard" clergy who all initially assumed power in 1979 -- that erupted into public view in the recent presidential election campaign.
Moon Landing Myth? Conspiracy Theories Persist
Economic Times (India)
Every week Roger Launius, chief historian at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, devotes his time to debunking one of history's favourite such theories: That astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin never landed on the moon. The entire July 20, 1969, landing and the spacewalk several hours later was just a show, all lies, filmed in a Hollywood studio or in a desert, the sceptics say. Few other conspiracy theories have proven so popular or long-lived.
Iconic Spanish Civil War Photo Was Staged, Says Newspaper
Agence France Presse
A Spanish Civil War photo by Robert Capa that shows a Republican soldier at the apparent moment he was fatally hit in the back by a bullet was in fact staged, a Spanish newspaper claimed on Friday The photo -- one of the most emblematic war photographs of all time -- has long sparked controversy, with Capa supporters defending it as authentic but some critics saying it was too perfect not to have been staged.
Israeli Soldiers Reveal Brutal Truth of Gaza Attack
The Independent (Britain)
Israeli troops were repeatedly encouraged by officers to prioritise their own safety over that of Palestinian civilians when they embarked on the ground invasion of Gaza in January, according to the first direct testimonies of soldiers who served in the operation. The first eye-witness accounts of the war by serving Israeli reservists and conscripts describes the Israeli use of Palestinian civilians as "human shields". They detail the killing of at least two civilians, the vandalism, looting and wholesale destruction of Palestinian houses, the use of deadly white phosphorus, bellicose religious advice from army rabbis and what another battalion commander described to his troops as "insane firepower with artillery and air force".
Zionism and the Third Reich
A little-known chapter of history is the wide-ranging collaboration between Zionism and Hitler's Third Reich. During the 1930s, Jewish Zionists and German National Socialists shared similar views on how to deal with the Jewish Question. They agreed that Jews and Germans were distinctly different nationalities, and that Jews did not belong in Germany.
Stimulus Demands Will Doom Obama
Dick Morris and Eileen McGan -- NewsMax
Now President Barack Obama says in The Washington Post that he never envisioned that his stimulus package would afford quick relief to the American economy, but would do so only after it had run its two-year course. But when it was passed, Obama sang a different tune, urgently demanding its enactment to speed relief to a sagging economy. He claimed it would "create or save" 600,000 jobs. Now, even as the economy loses 450,000 jobs each month, he pretends that it is a matter of time until the stimulus kicks in The deeper he gets into his term, the more it is apparent that he threw it all away when he first took office and demanded over $1 trillion in stimulus and supplemental appropriation spending. He was doomed to lose the game right after he received the first kickoff.
Defending the Indefensible Settlements
Richard Silverman -- The Guardian (Britain)
To counter US opposition to Israel's settlements, Israel's American supporters are adopting a new, defensive strategy / A former insider at Aipac [American Israel Public Affairs Committee] has spilled the beans on a major secret initiative by The Israel Project (TIP) designed to counter opposition in the US to Israeli settlements in the occupied territories Rather than try to defend Israeli settlements, change the subject. If that doesn't work, try accusing those who advocate removing Jewish settlements of promoting "a kind of ethnic cleansing to move all Jews" from the West Bank What is especially instructive about the document is that it concedes that Israel is on the defensive here in the US.
Germany Calls For Ban on `Neo-Nazi Websites Abroad
The Associated Press
Germany's Justice Minister on Thursday called for foreign Internet service providers to remove neo-Nazi images, texts and other content that can be viewed inside the country in violation of laws forbidding any Nazi symbols. German authorities have little control over German-language content hosted by servers in other countries, including the United States. Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries said her office would appeal to foreign Internet providers to use their own terms of service as grounds for eliminating content promoting the far-right ideal.
In Canada, Jewish Groups Call for Censorship at York University
National Post (Canada)
York University teachers should be prohibited from expressing personal political views unrelated to the course they are teaching, according to a report from a commission of Toronto-area Jewish groups on improving campus life for Jewish students. The commission compiled hundreds of submissions from students, faculty and Jewish community members after recent events at York "have left many members of our community shocked and shaken," the report cited. The final report cites episodes of "intimidation, harassment, ridicule and virulent anti-Israel sentiment" on the York campus over the past year.
US Budget Deficit at One Trillion Dollars
The US budget deficit has moved above $1 trillion for the first time - with three months of the financial year remaining, official data show. The government stepped up spending to counter the recession, and the bailout of financial institutions has taken a huge chunk out of government finances. Falling tax revenues and unemployment benefit spending have also contributed. The figure compares with $455 billion for the whole 2007/8 financial year, but the 2008/9 deficit was expected to soar.
Ernest Hemingway Revealed as Failed Soviet Spy
The Guardian (Britain)
Last week, however, saw the publication of Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America (Yale University Press), which reveals the Nobel prize-winning novelist was for a while on the KGB's list of its agents in America. Co-written by John Earl Haynes, Harvey Klehr and Alexander Vassiliev, the book is based on notes that Vassiliev, a former KGB officer, made when he was given access in the 90s to Stalin-era intelligence archives in Moscow. Its section on the author's secret life as a "dilettante spy" draws on his KGB file in saying he was recruited in 1941 before making a trip to China, given the cover name "Argo", and "repeatedly expressed his desire and willingness to help us" when he met Soviet agents in Havana and London in the 40s.
US, Israel Settlement Deal Emerging
The Jerusalem Post (Israel)
Israel and the US are moving toward a compromise solution on the settlement issue that might allow both sides to claim "victory," The Jerusalem Post has learned. According to senior government officials, under this type of solution, Israel would declare a moratorium of a few months on the settlement issue, possibly half a year, while the US would give Israel a green light to complete a still-to-be-determined number of housing units in the settlements that are in advanced stages of construction.
When Will The Recovery Begin? Never
The so-called "green shoots" of recovery are turning brown in the scorching summer sun. In fact, the whole debate about when and how a recovery will begin is wrongly framed This economy can't get back on track because the track we were on for years -- featuring flat or declining median wages, mounting consumer debt, and widening insecurity, not to mention increasing carbon in the atmosphere -- simply cannot be sustained. The X marks a brand new track -- a new economy. What will it look like? Nobody knows. All we know is the current economy can't "recover" because it can't go back to where it was before the crash.
British University Students `Ignorant of Most Basic History Facts
The Telegraph (Britain)
University students are ignorant about some of the most significant events in history because teaching trendy topics and generic skills has sidelined the topic in schools, a lecturer has warned "In other words, we are looking at a whole generation that knows almost nothing about the history of their (or anyone else's) country. "This is an outrage and should be intolerable," he added. His findings were highlighted by Michael Gove, the Conservative schools spokesman, as he pledged to "completely overhaul" the curriculum to ensure pupils are given a proper grounding in science, maths, British history and literature.
British Schools Prepare for Intensified `Holocaust Instruction
TES - TSL Education (Britain)
Hundreds of schools across the country are to become specialist centres of Holocaust education under a national scheme launched today. The plan, which will be rolled out in 300 schools, forms part of the new 1.5 million pounds Holocaust education programme run by London Universitys Institute of Education. As The TES revealed in November, the Holocaust Education Development Programme will provide extensive specialist training for 3,500 teachers - one from every secondary in England.
Nine Israelis Arrested for Scamming Millions From U.S. Pensioners
The Tel Aviv police fraud squad arrested on Sunday nine Israelis on suspicion of netting millions of dollars from U.S. pensioners in a so-called Nigerian scam. Police raided an office in the city, which is suspected to have been the nerve center of the dodgy enterprise. The defendants, all in their 20s and 30s, allegedly phoned American pensioners, told them they had won the lottery and asked them for a fee of several thousand dollars for the transfer of the prize money, which in fact never existed.
German Refugees Flee Advancing Soviet Forces
Deutsche Wochenschau YouTube (Video)
Masses of German refugees flee westwards from advancing Soviet forces. Home guard Volkssturm men build barricades to defend the homeland. Apparently from February 1945. Excerpt from the weekly German wartime newsreel, Deutsche Wochenschau. With English subtitles (not entirely accurate). Runtime:1:06 mins.
U.S. Uses False Taliban Aid Charge to Pressure Iran
Inter Press Service
The Barack Obama administration has given new prominence to a Bush administration charge that Iran is providing military training and assistance to the Taliban in Afghanistan, for which no evidence has ever been produced, and which has been discredited by data obtained by IPS from the Pentagon itself. The new twist in the charge is that it is being made in the context of serious talks between NATO officials and Iran involving possible Iranian cooperation in NATO's logistical support for the war against the insurgents in Afghanistan. Since the early to mid-1990s, Iranian policy in Afghanistan has been more consistently and firmly opposed to the Taliban than that of the United States.
Hitler's Futuristic Stealth Bomber
Daily Mail (Britain)
With its smooth and elegant lines, this could be a prototype for some future successor to the stealth bomber. But this flying wing was actually designed by the Nazis 30 years before the Americans successfully developed radar-invisible technology. Now an engineering team has reconstructed the Horten Ho 2-29 from blueprints, with startling results. Blast from the past: The full-scale replica of the Ho 2-29 bomber was made with materials available in the 40s Futuristic: The stealth plane design was years ahead of its time. It was faster and more efficient than any other plane of the period and its stealth powers did work against radar.
Reporter Feels Jewish Mobs Hate in Jerusalem
Anne Barker -- Australian Broadcasting Corporation
No protest - indeed no story in my career - has distressed me in the way I was distressed at a protest in Jerusalem on Saturday (July 4) involving several hundred ultra-Orthodox Jews As the protest became noisier and the crowd began yelling, I took my recorder and microphone out of my bag to record the sound. Suddenly the crowd turned on me, screaming in my face. Dozens of angry men began spitting on me. I found myself herded against a brick wall as they kept on spitting - on my face, my hair, my clothes, my arms. It was like rain, coming at me from all directions - hitting my recorder, my bag, my shoes, even my glasses. Big gobs of spit landed on me like heavy raindrops.
Israel `Wantonly Destroyed Gaza, Says Amnesty International
Amnesty International said on Thursday Israel inflicted "wanton destruction" in the Gaza Strip in attacks that often targeted Palestinian civilians during an offensive in December and January in the Hamas-run enclave. The London-based rights group, in a 117-page report on the 22 days of fighting, also criticized the Islamist movement Hamas for rocket attacks on Israel, which it called "war crimes." Among other conclusions, Amnesty said it found no evidence to support Israeli claims that Gaza guerrillas deliberately used civilians as "human shields," but it did, however, cite evidence that Israeli troops put children and other civilians in harm's way by forcing them to remain in homes taken over by soldiers.
Resolution on Stalin Riles Russians
Russian delegates have walked out of an OSCE session in Vilnius after it voted for a remembrance day for the victims of both Nazism and Stalinism. The pan-European security and democracy body passed a resolution equating the roles of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany in starting World War II. Moscow's delegation boycotted the vote after failing to have it withdrawn. The resolution, meant to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain, said that Nazi Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union brought genocide and crimes against humanity to Europe.
Hungarian Lawmakers Reject `Holocaust Denial Law
Hungarys lawmakers rejected constitutional amendments to make Holocaust denial a punishable offense. Some local Jewish community leaders believe that Monday's vote secured the first parliamentary victory for Jobbik, a rapidly rising local neo-Nazi movement widely predicted to win several seats in the national elections due within a year. The proposals, put forth by the ruling Socialist caretaker government, attracted fewer than half the votes needed to adopt a constitutional amendment.
