January 2009 Headlines
Leaders of China and Russia Lecture Westerners
The Financial Times (Britain)

The leaders of China and Russia on Wednesday turned the tables on their western counterparts who have dictated the worlds economic agenda, lecturing them for policy failures they said had led to the global financial crisis. Wen Jiabao, the Chinese premier, and Vladimir Putin, Russias prime minister, used the World Economic Forum in Davos [Switzerland] to argue that the two rising powers must play a bigger role in a new economic order. Mr Putin mocked American delegates who had talked at last years Davos gathering about the US economys fundamental stability and its cloudless prospects

Pope Seeks to Dampen Row Over Bishops Holocaust Remarks
BBC News

Pope Benedict XVI has expressed "full and indisputable solidarity" with Jews, distancing himself from a bishop who denies the Nazis used gas chambers. Briton Richard Williamson was among four bishops whose excommunications were lifted by the Pope last week. Bishop Williamson said recently: "I believe there were no gas chambers". Jewish leaders, marking Holocaust Remembrance Day, reacted angrily to the rehabilitation of the bishop, saying it had harmed Catholic-Jewish dialogue. The Pope told a Vatican audience on Wednesday the Holocaust "should be a warning for all against forgetting, denial and reductionism".

International Holocaust Remembrance Day Has Not Changed a Thing
Noah Klieger -- The Jerusalem Post (Israel)

In November 2005, the United Nations decided to designate January 27th as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It goes without saying that this was a historic and important decision To put it bluntly, the UN's decision and the few ceremonies cannot curb the growing anti-Semitism The UN decision in 2005 was indeed meant to mark the massacre of European Jewry, yet it has not changed a thing; neither attitudes nor views If high-ranking figures continue to disseminate hatred against Jews, then International Holocaust Remembrance Day has remained empty of all substance.

We Will Never Forget: Israels Criminal Campaign in Gaza
What Really Happened

A short but powerful video documentary montage on Israels recent Gaza campaign, which has prompted worldwide condemnation. Runtime: 8:58 mins.

Putting Down the `Valkyrie Conspiracy: My Role in Berlin on July 20, 1944
Otto Ernst Remer

About an hour and a half after the "Valkyrie" order was given [by the von Stauffenberg conspirators], my regiment, by then combat-ready, moved into the areas to be sealed off in accordance with its orders. The normal guard units, such as those at the War Memorial and the Bendlerblock, the headquarters of the Commander of the Replacement Army and of the Defense Production Office, remained at their posts Goebbels asked me to address the troops assembled there, which I did. Their outrage at the traitorous goings-on was so great that they would have torn every single conspirator to pieces, had they been there.

My Role In Putting Down the 1944 Attempt to Overthrow Hitler
Otto Ernst Remer - DVD video disc available from IHR

First-person account of the July 20, 1944, attempt to assassinate Hitler and take control of Germany, and how it failed. Remer, who was commander of the Berlin guard battalion, is unapologetic about his key role in putting down the attempted putsch. An informative introduction provides background and historical context.

Remer Speaks to His Troops in Berlin
Deutsche Wochenschau (Video)

Otto Ernst Remer, commander of the Berlin regiment that put down the "Valkyrie" conspiracy in central Berlin on July 20, 1944, speaks to his troops. German newsreel excerpt. With English subtitles.

Secret of the White Rose: Carl Orff and `Carmina Burana
The Guardian (Britain)

The name Carl Orff generally means one of two things. The first is that Orff was the composer of the insistently earthy Carmina Burana, the ever-popular choral celebration of sex, drinking and youthful excess made famous at Premier League football grounds and in television ads for aftershave and lager. The second is that he was the foremost German composer to achieve international eminence during the Nazi years The Nazi newspaper, the Vlkischer Beobachter, once pointed to Orff's cantata as "the kind of clear, stormy, and yet always disciplined music that our time requires".

America is `Beholden to Israel, Says Former CIA Operative
Robert Baer (Interview) Inter Press Service

In American politics, you can't do anything in the Middle East without the approval of Tel Aviv, at least on some level. It's impossible. I mean, I cannot think of a country that is so beholden to a small country like this, even a superpower, in all of history. I can't even think of it Look at the major newspapers. They have a Zionist agenda. They do You can't talk about the reality of Israel. The only place you can talk about the reality of Israel is in Israel. They tell you things you will never hear in the United States Look at the New York Times; it's almost an extension of Israel.

Time Running Out for Two-State Solution of Israel-Palestine Issue
CBS News 60 Minutes

A growing number of Israelis and Palestinians had concluded that peace between them was no longer possible, that history had passed it by. For peace to have a chance, Israel would have to withdraw from the West Bank, which would then become the Palestinian state. Its known as the "two-state" solution. But, while negotiations have been going on for 15 years, hundreds of thousands of Jewish settlers have moved in to occupy the West Bank. Palestinians say they can't have a state with Israeli settlers all over it, which the settlers say is precisely the idea. Runtime: 13:10 mins.

Gaza War Ended in Utter Failure for Israel
Gideon Levy Haaretz (Israel)

We have not weakened Hamas. The vast majority of its combatants were not harmed and popular support for the organization has in fact increased. Their war has intensified the ethos of resistance and determined endurance. A country which has nursed an entire generation on the ethos of a few versus should know to appreciate that by now. There was no doubt as to who was David and who was Goliath in this war Israel's actions have dealt a serious blow to public support for the state. While this does not always translate itself into an immediate diplomatic situation, the shockwaves will arrive one day. The whole world saw the images.

Comments by `Denier Bishop Are Unacceptable, Says Vatican
The Associated Press

The Vatican said Monday that comments by a recently rehabilitated bishop that no Jews were gassed during the Holocaust were unacceptable and violate Church teaching. In a front-page article, the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano reaffirmed that Pope Benedict XVI deplored all forms of anti-Semitism and that all Roman Catholics must do the same The Vatican has stressed that removing the excommunication by no means implied the Vatican shared Williamson's views.

Germans Consider Legal Action Against Bishop for Holocaust Remarks
Agence France Presse

German prosecutors said Friday they had launched a probe against a controversial British bishop on suspicion of inciting racial hatred for comments he made about the Holocaust on Swedish television. A spokesman for the public prosecutor's office in the southern city of Regensburg said it had opened an investigation against Richard Williamson, 68, for remarks he made in an interview broadcast this week. "I believe there were no gas chambers... I think that 200,000 to 300,000 Jews perished in Nazi concentration camps but none of them by gas chambers," said Williamson during an interview with the SVT channel.

The Elusive `Six Million'
Mark Weber

The Six Million figure is hammered into the public consciousness, not only in newspapers, magazines, motion pictures, and television, but also routinely in our schools An information sheet issued by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council describes the grand Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, as a "living memorial to the six million Jews and millions of other victims of Nazi fanaticism who perished in the Holocaust." Just what is the basis for this familiar figure?

Holocaust Denied: Israels Ethnic Cleansing
John Pilger

Palestine's right to exist was canceled 61 years ago and the expulsion and, if necessary, extinction of the indigenous people was planned and executed by the founders of Israel. They know, for example, that the infamous "Plan D" resulted in the murderous depopulation of 369 Palestinian towns and villages by the Haganah (Jewish army) and that massacre upon massacre of Palestinian civilians in such places as Deir Yassin, al-Dawayima, Eilaboun, Jish, Ramle and Lydda are referred to in official records as "ethnic cleansing."

Popes Gesture to Traditionalists Outrages Jews
Reuters

Pope Benedict's rehabilitation of four traditionalist bishops may heal one festering Catholic wound at the expense of opening a wider one with Jews because one of the prelates is a Holocaust denier. The four bishops re-admitted to the Church over the weekend lead the far-right Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), which has about 600,000 members and rejects modernisations of Roman Catholic worship and doctrine. One of the four, the British-born Richard Williamson, has made statements denying the full extent of the Nazi Holocaust of European Jews, as accepted by mainstream historians.

No Killing of Jews in Gas Chambers, Says Catholic Bishop
Swedish Television (Video)

Bishop Richard Williamson explains in this Swedish Television interview why he does not accept that millions of Jews were killed in gas chambers during World War II. Among other things, he cites the forensic investigation of American gas chamber specialist Fred Leuchter. Video runtime: 5:47 mins.

German Authorities Confiscate Reprints of Nazi-Era Newspapers
The Daily Mail (Britain)

German police are confiscating 280 copies of a publication of Nazi newspapers reprinted by a British company. Authorities have announced they will sue the publishing for printing and disseminating Nazi symbols such as the Swastika, which is a criminal offense in Germany. London-based Albertas will also be charged with breach of copyright laws, as the publishing rights for the Nazi-era newspapers lay with the German government. The Zeitungszeugen (Newspaper Witnesses) project is a new weekly publication that reprints copies of original newspapers from the National Socialist rule.

Why Israel Won't Survive
Ali Abunimah

In terms of ability to murder and destroy, Israel is unmatched. But Israel's problem is not, as its propaganda insists, "terrorism" to be defeated by sufficient application of high explosives. Its problem is legitimacy, or rather a profound and irreversible lack of it. Israel simply cannot bomb its way to legitimacy. Israel was founded as a "Jewish state" through the ethnic cleansing of Palestine's non-Jewish majority Arab population. It has been maintained in existence only through Western support and constant use of violence to prevent the surviving indigenous population from exercising political rights within the country, or returning from forced exile.

Dr. Toben, `Holocaust Denier, Vows to Fight German Charge
The Australian (Australia)

Revisionist commentator Fredrick Toben will fight charges of Holocaust denial in Germany within weeks of escaping extradition proceedings in London, after negotiating with German prosecutors to face a European court. In a video posted on YouTube, Dr Toben declares he will travel to Germany to meet Mannheim prosecutor Andreas Grossman, responsible for the failed extradition case against the former Adelaide schoolteacher in Britain last year. "Mr Grossman, here is a message for you: that in the near future I shall be travelling to Germany, I shall be visiting you and we shall be thrashing it out in the German court," Dr Toben says in the video.

British Court Convicts Two for Web Racism in Historic Trial
The Jewish Chronicle (Britain)

Two racists have been convicted of publishing racially inflammatory material in the first case brought by the Crown Prosecution Service involving the diffusion of race hate via the internet. Stephen Whittle, 41, from Preston, Lancashire, wrote five offensive articles under the pen-name Luke OFarrell, published on the internet by his co-defendant, 51-year-old Simon Sheppard from Hull. As if the case were not significant enough, it assumed even greater importance when both Sheppard and Whittle fled to America as the jury was returning verdicts after a seven-week trial at Leeds Crown Court in July. The pair flew to Los Angeles where they claimed political asylum.

Beware The Liberal Fascists
Jonah Goldberg -- Daily Mail (Britain)

As early as 1946, George Orwell wrote that: 'The word Fascism has now no meaning except in so far as it signifies "something not desirable".' Today, a better working definition of a fascist might simply be a conservative who's winning an argument. But what if fascism means something more than 'bad'. What if fascism was not, and is not, a Right-wing phenomenon at all? Even though we are greeted every day with countless stories of 'political correctness gone mad' we tend to dismiss them as solitary or silly. But the reality is that they fit into a bigger picture, a coherent Left-wing agenda.

Another War, Another Defeat
John J. Mearsheimer The American Conservative

Israelis and their American supporters claim that Israel learned its lessons well from the disastrous 2006 Lebanon war and has devised a winning strategy for the present war against Hamas. Of course, when a ceasefire comes, Israel will declare victory. Dont believe it. Israel has foolishly started another war it cannot win Discourse about this longstanding conflict has undergone a sea change in the West in recent years, and many of us who were once wholly sympathetic to Israel now see that the Israelis are the victimizers and the Palestinians are the victims.

Japanese Reading of World War II History Stirs Debate
The Associated Press

Toshio Tamogami draws a full pension, gives lectures, appears on TV talk shows and is treated with respect. Not bad for a general who two months ago was fired for writing an essay justifying Japan's entry into World War II. The case of the ousted air force chief reveals how the idea that Japan's war was justified still lives on in the minds of many Japanese, including powerful ones. When Japan went to war, the nation was told it was for self-defense, to free Asia from Western colonial powers, and to deter the United States from attacking Japan.

The Myth of Israel's Strategic Genius
Stephen Walt Foreign Policy

This image of Israeli strategic genius has been nurtured by Israelis over the years and seems to be an article of faith among neoconservatives and other hardline supporters of Israel in the United States. It also fits nicely with the wrongheaded but still popular image of Israel as the perennial David facing a looming Arab Goliath Given that our "special relationship" with Israel means that the United States is invariably associated with Jerusalem's actions, Americans should not hesitate to raise their voices to criticize Israel when it is acting in ways that are not in the U.S. national interest.

Pure Propaganda From Americas `Papers of Record
Philip Giraldi

The Israeli propaganda machine has called up its allies in the media and Congress to make sure that no one will condemn the invasion of Gaza, which has killed and wounded thousands of Palestinians, most of them civilians and many of them children. The pictures of small bodies lined up to be buried are convincing evidence that something is very wrong in Gaza, but leaders in Congress from both parties have nonetheless rallied to the cause of Israeli victimhood, putting all the blame for the conflict on the Palestinians.

Ancient Persians `Gassed Roman Soldiers
BBC News

Ancient Persians were the first to use chemical warfare against their enemies, a study has suggested. A UK researcher said he found evidence that the Persian Empire used poisonous gases on the Roman city of Dura, Eastern Syria, in the 3rd Century AD. The theory is based on the discovery of remains of about 20 Roman soldiers found at the base of the city wall. The findings were presented the Archaeological Institute of America's annual meeting. The study shows that the Persians dug a mine underneath the wall in order to enter the city. They also ignited bitumen and sulphur crystals to produce dense poisonous gases

The Boss Has Gone Mad
Uri Avnery (Israel)

We Israelis have become a nation like all nations, and the memory of the Holocaust causes us, from time to time, to behave like the worst of them It is impossible to understand the viciousness of this war without taking into account the historical background: the feeling of victimhood after all that has been done to the Jews throughout the ages, and the conviction that after the Holocaust, we have the right to do anything, absolutely anything, to defend ourselves, without any inhibitions due to law or morality.

Karl Marx Staging a Comeback in Germany
Britannica Blog

Whos benefiting from the current economic meltdown? Karl Marx! Call him the comeback kid of the current economic crisis. His works are selling in record numbers across Germany; publishers cannot reissue his works especially (Das Kapital) fast enough to keep up with the demand, as German universities have made him a prime topic of study in an attempt to understand the crisis affecting capitalist economies.

Liberation: The Bitter Road to Freedom, Europe 1944-1945
Max Hastings - The Sunday Times (Britain)

Hitchcock, an American college professor, has produced the first book I have read that explicitly addresses the plight of civilians during the "crusade for Europe". He begins with the experiences of the population of Normandy in the summer of 1944, which go far to explain the bitterness with which many greeted their disappointed "saviours" From the autumn of 1944 until the end of the war, Belgians also complained bitterly about American troops systematically looting furniture and household possessions. The Lige press started using the term gangsters about US soldiers

US Economy May Sputter for Years
Los Angeles Times

Transfixed by the daily spectacle of dismal economic news and wild Wall Street swings, few Americans have looked up to see what a wide array of economists say lies beyond the immediate crisis. And with good reason: The picture isn't pretty. The sleek racing machine that was the U.S. economy is unlikely to return any time soon despite the huge repair efforts now under way. Instead, it probably will continue to sputter and threaten to stall for years to come. The prospects are so gloomy, according to a recent study, that Americans may be slightly worse off in four years than they are now.

American Power Is on the Wane
Paul Kennedy -- The Wall Street Journal

As the world stumbles from the truly horrible year of 2008 into the very scary year of 2009, there seems, on the face of it, many reasons for the foes of America to think that the world's number one power will take heavier hits than most other big nations This country possesses tremendous advantages compared to other great powers in its demographics, its land-to-people ratio, its raw materials, its research universities and laboratories, its flexible work force, etc. These strengths have been overshadowed during a near-decade of political irresponsibility in Washington, rampant greed on Wall Street and its outliers, and excessive military ventures abroad.

What You Dont Know About Gaza
Rashid Khalidi The New York Times

Nearly everything youve been led to believe about Gaza is wrong. Below are a few essential points that seem to be missing from the conversation, much of which has taken place in the press, about Israels attack on the Gaza Strip. The Gazans. Most of the people living in Gaza are not there by choice. The majority of the 1.5 million people crammed into the roughly 140 square miles of the Gaza Strip belong to families that came from towns and villages outside Gaza like Ashkelon and Beersheba. They were driven to Gaza by the Israeli Army in 1948.

A `Legacy of Suffering' Under Israel Fuels Palestinian Resistance
Mousa Abu Marzook (Hamas) Los Angeles Times

Skepticism runs high that any justice for our people might come from a new president who remained ominously silent in the presence of the latest Israeli onslaught, and who has aligned himself so thoroughly with Israels interests, so long in advance of taking power Our spirit to fight on is the legacy of collective suffering: With tens of thousands dead or wounded by decades of the peace process, you cannot find a family in Palestine Muslim or Christian, Hamas, Fatah, PFLP or Islamic Jihad without a son or daughter killed, injured, jailed or tortured, or which does not count itself or its kin among the millions of refugees living in U.N. camps.

The Religion of `The Holocaust
Robert Faurisson Echorouk (Algeria)

In the Western world, people have the right to challenge all religions, except the religion of the Holocaust. One may make fun of God, Jesus, Mohamed but not of what Simon Wiesenthal, Elie Wiesel and Simone Veil have had to say about the alleged genocide or the alleged gas chambers. Auschwitz has become a holy shrine We all have the means to help in the liberation of Palestine. These means consist in making known to the whole world the findings of revisionist research. All credibility must be taken away from the alleged Holocaust, which has become the number one weapon of Zionism and the State of Israel; this lie is the sword and shield of that State.

Bavaria Demands Halt on Reprinting Nazi Newspapers
Deutsche Welle (Germany)

The German state of Bavaria has demanded that a British publishing company stop reprinting Nazi-period newspapers and recall released copies. The state finance ministry says Bavaria has sole possession of the copyrights. In a new project known as "Zeitungszeugen," copies of German newspapers from the 1930s and 1940s are published in a weekly series aimed at schools and the general public. The first issue of reprints begins with the day that Adolf Hitler was elected German chancellor on Jan. 30, 1933. "Reichskanzler Hitler," reads the headline.

Americans Believe Obama Will Deliver
USA Today

Americans are as down as they've been in decades about the state of the country and its polarized politics, even as they express soaring confidence that Barack Obama will be able to turn things around. A USA Today/ Gallup Poll finds stratospheric expectations for the incoming president that his own supporters acknowledge may be unrealistic. A majority of those surveyed say Obama will be able to achieve every one of ten major campaign promises, from doubling the production of alternative energy to ensuring that all children have health insurance coverage.

Bill Moyers Speaks Frankly On Israel/Gaza, and About Washington
Glenn Greenwald Salon.com

On his PBS Journal Show Bill Moyers delivered a poignant essay on Israel/Gaza The most striking aspect is that sober, fact-based, even-handed commentary like this about Israel automatically subjects one to widespread, profoundly ugly accusations of being anti-Israel and even anti-Semitic, to the point where not a single U.S. Senator and no House member other than a handful dare utter anything other than unquestioning support for Israeli actions, such that most members of the U.S. Congress are, literally, far more willing to question and oppose American military actions than Israel's military actions.

If Obama Is Serious, He Should Get Tough With Israel
Aaron David Miller -- Newsweek

Barack Obama -- as every other U.S. president before him will protect the special relationship with Israel. But the days of America's exclusive ties to Israel may be coming to an end. Despite efforts to sound reassuring during the campaign, the new administration will have to be tough, much tougher than either Bill Clinton or George W. Bush were, if it's serious about Arab-Israeli peacemaking. The departure point for a viable peace deal either with Syria or the Palestinians must not be based purely on what the political traffic in Israel will bear, but on the requirements of all sides.

Olmerts Poodle
Patrick J. Buchanan

As Israel entered the third week of its Gaza blitz, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert regaled a crowd in Ashkelon with an astonishing tale. He had, said Olmert, whistled up George Bush, interrupted him in the middle of a speech and told him to instruct Condi Rice not to vote for a U.N. resolution Condi herself had written. Bush did as told, said Olmert. The crowd loved it. Here is the background Yet public gloating by an Israeli prime minister that he can order a U.S. president off a podium and instruct him to reverse and humiliate his secretary of state may cause even Ehuds poodle to rise up on its hind legs one day and bite its master.

Israel's Wars of Forced Regime Change
Helena Cobban -- Inter Press Service

The war that Israel launched on Gaza Dec. 27 is the seventh war of choice Israel has launched against its neighbors since 1973, the last year in which it fought a war that was forced upon it. Of the seven wars one in Lebanon, 1978 had the goal of establishing an Israeli-controlled "security zone" running inside Lebanon's border with Israel. The other six, including the present war on Gaza, all aimed at imposing a "forced regime change" on Arab communities neighboring Israel through the violent physical dismantlement of politico-military structures then present in, or on occasion dominating, those societies.

Hitler's Secret Library
Timothy W. Ryback -- The Sunday Times (Britain)

By the time he died, at 56, Hitler owned an estimated 16,000 volumes. It was by any measure an impressive collection: first editions of the works of philosophers, historians, poets, playwrights and novelists. For him, the library represented a Pierian spring, that metaphorical source of knowledge and inspiration. He drew deeply there, quelling intellectual insecurities and nourishing fanatic ambitions. He read voraciously, at least one book per night, sometimes more, he claimed He ranked Don Quixote, along with Robinson Crusoe, Uncle Toms Cabin and Gullivers Travels, among the great works of world literature.

Jewish Group Says Pro-Gaza Rallies Violate Canadian Law
Canadian Press

Canada's largest Jewish advocacy group will ask police to investigate whether hate laws were broken during recent rallies held in cities across Canada to condemn Israel's attacks on Gaza - an allegation roundly dismissed Tuesday by the group's Arab counterpart. The Canadian Jewish Congress ... has video and images from "pro-Hamas" protests in Toronto, Montreal and Calgary that were "uncivil, un-Canadian, that demonize Jews and Israelis," and might have violated Canadian laws, CEO Bernie Farber said.

Obama's Pro-Israel Congressional Welcome
Rami G. Khouri Daily Star (Beirut)

If the Israeli attack on Gaza that started 18 days ago was designed partly to send a message to the incoming Barack Obama, the United States Congress in the past week seems to have joined the battle to handcuff the new president and lay down the law for him, even before he takes office This almost irrational absolute support for Israel in both the legislative and executive branches of the US government occurs amid a chorus of international condemnation of Israel for using excessive force None of this is surprising or new. It only amazes me that Americans expect us to take them seriously and not to laugh - or throw up - when they preach to us about promoting democracy.

Israel Is Losing This War: How Many Divisions?
Uri Avnery

Almost all the Western media initially repeated the official Israeli propaganda line. They almost entirely ignored the Palestinian side of the story, not to mention the daily demonstrations of the Israeli peace camp If the war ends with Hamas still standing, bloodied but unvanquished, in face of the mighty Israeli military machine, it will look like a fantastic victory, a victory of mind over matter. What will be seared into the consciousness of the world will be the image of Israel as a blood-stained monster, ready at any moment to commit war crimes and not prepared to abide by any moral restraints.

Deficits To Be Bruising For Decade
The Associated Press

The United States is likely to have bruising budget deficits over the next decade, President-elect Barack Obama's nominee to head the White House budget office said Tuesday. Peter Orszag, designated by Obama to run the Office of Management and Budget, told the Senate Budget Committee to expect budget deficits equaling five percent of the size of the economy for the next five or ten years. That would mean deficits of $750 billion or so over the next couple of years, and steadily exceeding $1 trillion by the end of the next decade.

Israel Using Holocaust Guilt in Gaza Campaign, Says British Jewish MP
The Associated Press

A British lawmaker declared Thursday that Israel was taking advantage of the guilt many non-Jews feel over the Holocaust to ruthlessly press ahead with its offensive against Hamas in Gaza. Gerald Kaufman, a governing Labour Party legislator, sharply criticized Israel in a House of Commons debate on Gaza, arguing that the Jewish state has exploited guilt that much of the world feels for having ignored the slaughter of six million of Jews during World War II.

Americas Shame
Paul Craig Roberts

Why does Israel have a right to exist, but Palestine doesnt? This is the question of our time Driving people off their land is strictly illegal under international law, but Israel has been getting away with it for decades. Gaza is a concentration camp of 1.5 million Palestinians who were driven from their homes and villages and collected in the Gaza Ghetto The United States, "Christian America," has been Israels greatest enabler in its long-term murder of the Palestinian people. Millions of "evangelical Christians" endorse Israels ethnic cleansing of Palestine. The rest of the world condemns the Israeli military attack on the Gaza Ghetto.

Mass Rallies Worldwide Protest Israels Gaza Assault
Daily Mail (Britain)

Cities across the world became the platform for protest on Israel's military action in Gaza today [Jan. 11]. Organisers said more than 250,000 people marched through Spain's capital of Madrid, with other European cities including Athens, Brussels, Rome, Naples Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin also the focal points of protesters.

Israel: The Bernie Madoff of Countries
Taki Theodoracopulos

Israel can now safely be called the Bernie Madoff of countries, as it has lied to the world about its intentions, stolen Palestinian lands continuously since 1948, and managed to do all this with American taxpayers money. Every American taxpayer, starting with George W. Bush, has Palestinian blood on their hands thanks to the butchers that run Israel Americans have been totally brainwashed and lied to by Israels agents the neocons and their useful idiots. As soon as the murder of Palestinian children stops, Israels PR machine will go into overdrive, just as it did following the killings of Lebanese and Palestinians in 2006.

Israeli Troops Confront Unarmed Palestinians
Korean television

In this dramatic South Korea television news report, Israeli soldiers are seen firing on unarmed Palestinian demonstrators. A brave woman pleads with the soldiers not to fire. Runtime: 2:36 mins.

America Complicit in Israels Assault on Palestinians
Paul Findley

Americas abject subservience to the government of Israel has led us into deep complicity in Israels shocking air and ground military assault on 1.5 million defenseless human beings called Palestinians who are crowded in a hellhole called Gaza President George W. Bush publicly defends Israels bombing and ground assault by saying, Israel has a right to defend itself. It would be comforting if he would also say that the Gazans have a right to defend themselves against Israels longstanding harsh and abusive treatment. Are Palestinian lives less precious than Israelis?

The Humiliation of America
Paul Craig Roberts

Olmert gloated as he told Israelis how he had shamed US Secretary of State Condi Rice by preventing the American Secretary of State from supporting a resolution that she had helped to craft. Olmert proudly related how he had interrupted President Bushs speech in order to give Bush his marching orders on the UN vote. Israeli politicians have been bragging for decades about the control they exercise over the US government. In his final press conference, President Bush, deluded to the very end, said that the whole world respects America. In fact, when the world looks at America, what it sees is an Israeli colony.

Rice Shame-Faced by Bush Over UN Vote, Says Israels Olmert
Agence France Presse

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was left shame-faced after President George W. Bush ordered her to abstain in a key UN vote on the Gaza war, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Monday. "She was left shamed. A resolution that she prepared and arranged, and in the end she did not vote in favour," Olmert said in a speech.

Israeli Rabbi Advocates Carpet Bombing Gaza
The Jerusalem Post (Israel)

All civilians living in Gaza are collectively guilty for Kassam attacks on Sderot, former Sephardi chief rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu has written in a letter to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Eliyahu ruled that there was absolutely no moral prohibition against the indiscriminate killing of civilians during a potential massive military offensive on Gaza aimed at stopping the rocket launchings. The letter, published in Olam Katan [Small World], a weekly pamphlet to be distributed in synagogues nationwide this Friday, cited the biblical story of the Shechem massacre (Genesis 34) and Maimonides' commentary (Laws of Kings 9, 14) on the story as proof texts for his legal decision.

David Irving: 'Hitler Appointed Me His Biographer'
Johann Hari The Independent (Britain)

Hitler wasnt anti-Semitic, and the Holocaust wasnt his fault - David Irvings take on Nazi Germany has made him many enemies. / Hitler appointed me his biographer, David Irving says. He is not laughing. He is announcing that the Fuhrer the man he has revered since he was a child saw him coming. Yes: Hitler prophesied Irving as the man who would clear away the smears and bring The Truth at last to an unwilling world. Irving discovered this prophecy when he was writing a biography of Adolf Hitler, but he is only prepared to disclose it baldly now.

World War II Mass Grave of Germans Found in Poland
The Associated Press

Construction workers in northern Poland have unearthed a World War II-era mass grave containing what are believed to be the bodies of 1,800 German men, women and children who disappeared during the Soviet Army's march to Berlin. Poles digging at the site of a planned luxury hotel in Malbork which was called Marienburg and was part of Germany during the war excavated a bomb crater at the foot of the city's famous 13th century Teutonic Knights fortress, authorities said Monday.

Kissinger: Obama Has Opportunity to Create 'New World Order'
WorldNetDaily

Conflicts across the globe and an international respect for Barack Obama have created the perfect setting for establishment of "a New World Order," according to Henry Kissinger, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and former secretary of state under President Nixon.

Israel is Committing War Crimes
George E. Bisharat -- The Wall Street Journal

Israel's current assault on the Gaza Strip cannot be justified by self-defense. Rather, it involves serious violations of international law, including war crimes. Senior Israeli political and military leaders may bear personal liability for their offenses, and they could be prosecuted by an international tribunal, or by nations practicing universal jurisdiction over grave international crimes. Hamas fighters have also violated the laws of warfare, but their misdeeds do not justify Israel's acts.

Washington DC Mall Reflects Magnificence and Neglect
Los Angeles Times

Millions will cram shoulder to shoulder to watch Barack Obama take the oath of office this month as the nation's 44th president, another indelible snapshot of American democracy in full display on the National Mall. But beyond the reach of the camera's lens, the historic promenade that stretches from the Lincoln Memorial to the U.S. Capitol -- the place often called "America's Front Yard" -- is itself a monument to neglect. Patches of the once-lush lawn are trampled to dust. Half of the underground sprinkler system doesn't work. The sea wall around the Jefferson Memorial is sinking, and lately, wildlife is dying in the unfiltered waterways.

Israel Bans Arab Parties from Coming Elections
The Associated Press

Israel on Monday banned Arab political parties from running in next month's parliamentary elections, drawing accusations of racism by an Arab lawmaker who said he would challenge the decision in the country's Supreme Court. The ruling by parliament's Central Election Committee reflected the heightened tensions between Israel's Jewish majority and Arab minority caused by Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip. Arabs have held a series of demonstrations against the offensive.

US Job Losses Hit Record in 2008
BBC News

More US workers lost jobs last year than in any year since World War II, with employers axing 2.6 million posts and 524,000 in December alone. The US jobless rate rose to 7.2 percent in December, the highest in 16 years. The official data came as plane-maker Boeing said it would cut 4,500 jobs this year at its commercial airline arm due to the global economic slowdown.

NATO Making Same Mistakes in Afghanistan as Soviets, Say Russians
The Times (Britain)

The Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, once told his British counterpart that Nato was making all the same mistakes that the Soviet army did in the country in the 1980s Ruslan Aushev, now 54 and head of Russia's War Veterans' Committee, served twice with a combat regiment in Afghanistan and was made a Hero of the Soviet Union. We have to ask what the Afghans want, he told The Times. What have the people of Afghanistan received from the coalition? They lived very poorly before and they still live poorly, but sometimes they also get bombed by mistake.

Cambodia Marks Khmer Rouge Fall
BBC News

Tens of thousands of Cambodians have packed into a stadium in Phnom Penh to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the murderous Khmer Rouge. Senate President Chea Sim lauded "those who sacrificed their lives to save us from genocide", when Vietnamese-led forces ousted the regime in 1979. Up to two million people died over the four years of Khmer Rouge rule. But none of its surviving leaders have yet faced justice, triggering criticism of foot-dragging by the government.

World War II German `Speed Boat Saved by Military Enthusiast
The Telegraph (Britain)

Schnellboot-130, once the fastest vessel in the world, helped attack an Allied convoy off Slapton Sands, in Devon, in a battle in which nearly 1,000 Allied soldiers were killed. On the night of April 27, 1944, the boat was one of nine German vessels patrolling the English Channel when they stumbled upon Operation Tiger, which was the rehearsal for the D-Day landings. The convoy launched a raid and killed 946 Allied soldiers. Allied chiefs initially covered up the loss, keen to avoid the enemy becoming aware of what it had achieved or getting wind of any planned invasion of Europe.

Are All Americans Guilty?: Whatever Happened to Western Morality?
Paul Craig Roberts

We are living in the latter time. Financial interests, the military-security complex, and the Israel Lobby are the powers that rule America. They are buttressed by neo-conservatives and Christian Zionists and by the patriotic hubris that America is the main force for good operating in the world. The evils America commits are dismissed as necessary to the service of good. The destruction of Iraq, for example, is justified as bringing freedom and democracy to the Iraqi people. A number of commentators, including myself, predict a decline in Americas economic power.

The True Story Behind This War Is Not The One Israel Is Telling
Johann Hari -- The Independent (Britain)

So, partly in response to this pressure, Hamas offered Israel a long, long ceasefire and a de facto acceptance of two states, if only Israel would return to its legal borders. Rather than seize this opportunity and test Hamas's sincerity, the Israeli government reacted by punishing the entire civilian population. It announced that it was blockading the Gaza Strip in order to "pressure" its people to reverse the democratic process. The Israelis surrounded the Strip and refused to let anyone or anything out The Israeli government wants peace, but only one imposed on its own terms, based on the acceptance of defeat by the Palestinians.

US Deficit `To Hit $1 Trillion'
BBC News

The sharp slowdown in the US economy will push the federal budget deficit to more than $1 trillion, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says. The deficit of $1.186 trillion for the fiscal year ending on September 30 would be the largest on record. The projected deficit does not include the extra $800 billion spending being planned by US President-elect Barack Obama. But it highlights the deep economic difficulties facing Mr Obama when he is inaugurated on January 20. The CBO says that the slowing economy will lead to the US budget deficit more than doubling from last year's figure of $455 billion.

Nebbishy? Not These Jewish Guys
Lewis Beale -- Los Angeles Times

"To be obsessed with Jewish image is a classic Jewish thing," Cohen adds. "It used to be when you had tough-looking Jewish actors they played Italians, like James Caan and Henry Winkler. Now you have tough-looking goyim [non-Jews] playing Jews, and that's progress." But "Defiance" aside, there is still one area in which this more secure Jewish image seems in need of updating: the characters' love lives. Seinfeld, Sandler, David and the guys in "Knocked Up" seem to lust almost exclusively for non-Jewish women.

Defiance: Beyond Holo-kitsch
Richard Corliss Time magazine

At the moment, five new films that touch on the Nazis' Final Solution Defiance, The Reader, Good (which prompted Time critic Richard Schickel to call for a moratorium), The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Adam Resurrected are in theaters. A sixth, Valkyrie with Tom Cruise, is a Holo-cousin: it details a 1944 plot by German officers to kill Hitler. Taylor notes that since the early 1990s, when Steven Spielberg was preparing his Oscar-winning Schindler's List, there have been 170 Holocaust movies. (The Internet Movie Database lists 429 titles on the subject.) It has become not just a topic but a genre

The Ukrainian Holocaust and Jewish Pride
Charles Dodgson

November 22, 2007 was the 75th anniversary of the mass murder of up to 10 million Ukrainians by Stalins political police, the dreaded NKVD. This bureaucracy was the apogee of political correctness, murdering tens of thousands of farmers and small-town people because the region resisted collectivisation. The practice of mass political murder was initiated by Lenin immediately after Trotsky brought him to power. Stalin inherited and extended the practice and its apparatus. Until after the Second World War the senior ranks of the NKVD were disproportionately Jewish.

1930s Soviet Great Famine Was Not Deliberate, Say Russian Historians
Russia Today (Russia)

The Great Famine of the 1930s killed millions of people across the USSR. Its origins are still fiercely contested. But according to reports presented at a recent conference in Moscow, its main causes were a failure of management at the Kremlin and misplaced ambition among regional leaders. The studies were presented at an international scientific conference called Studying The History Of Stalinism: Achievements And Current Problems.

Nationalism and Genocide: Origin of the Artificial Famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine
Valentyn Moroz

These elementary analogies are enough to show that the murder of seven million Ukrainians in 1933 could not have been motivated by socio-economic or "class" reasons alone. Conflicts claim millions of victims only in struggles between nations, as in wars, colonial struggles, and so forth, when the national question is paramount. Moscow needed a holocaust. The imposed famine of 1933 and the whole range of repressive mass killings during the 1930s were an expression of the empire's struggle for self-preservation. It was this instinct, and not the economic doctrine of collectivization, that impelled the Kremlin to carry out the horrors of the 1930s.

World War II Grave Found in Poland With Bodies of 1,800 Germans
Bild (Germany)

Construction workers made a grisly discovery in the Polish town of Malbork when they uncovered a Second World War mass grave containing the bodies of 1,800 German civilians. The first skeletons had been found at the site in Poland in October, but yesterday the Public Prosecutors Office revealed that the body count now totals 1,800. [The grave includes] the remains of women, men and children, public prosecutor Waldemar Zduniak said.

Vatican Likens Gaza Strip to a `Big Concentration Camp
BBC News

The Pope's justice minister, Cardinal Renato Martino, has sharply criticised Israel's actions and likened the Gaza Strip to a "big concentration camp". Correspondents say his words mark the Vatican's toughest comments since Israel began its offensive with intensive air attacks 12 days ago. He accused both sides of only thinking of their own interests while innocent people paid the price. Pope Benedict XVI has already called for an end to the conflict.

An Unnecessary War
Jimmy Carter

I know from personal involvement that the devastating invasion of Gaza by Israel could easily have been avoided We knew that the 1.5 million inhabitants of Gaza were being starved, as the U.N. special rapporteur on the right to food had found that acute malnutrition in Gaza was on the same scale as in the poorest nations in the southern Sahara, with more than half of all Palestinian families eating only one meal a day After 12 days of "combat," the Israeli Defense Forces reported that more than 1,000 targets were shelled or bombed. During that time, Israel rejected international efforts to obtain a cease-fire, with full support from Washington.

German Children Will Be Forced to Visit Concentration Camp Sites
The Times (Britain)

German children will be obliged to visit the site of a Nazi concentration camp as part of their regular school curriculum. The move to be introduced in Bavaria and likely to become the norm throughout the country is in response to the almost fatal stabbing of a senior police officer by a neo-Nazi. "We have to take a stand against this far-right octopus, this tentacled monster," said Host Seehofer, the prime minister of Bavaria, who has ordered every ministry to come up with proposals to stamp out neo-Nazi influence in southern Germany. They will feed into a comprehensive action plan to be unveiled next week.

British Court Convicts Two Men of `Race Hate Crimes
BBC News

Two men have been convicted of publishing "obnoxious and abhorrent" racist material. Simon Sheppard, 51, of Brook Street, Selby, and Stephen Whittle, 41, of Avenham Lane, Preston, have been found guilty of a number of offences. A trial at Leeds Crown Court heard they printed leaflets and controlled websites featuring racist material. The pair, who are currently in the hands of US immigration authorities, will be sentenced in March. Sheppard and Whittle were originally convicted of race-hate offences at a trial in July last year. At an earlier hearing, Sheppard was found guilty of 11 offences and Whittle was found guilty of five offences.

Six Major Nazi, Holocaust Theme Movies in Theaters
The West Australian (Australia)

World War II films are back in vogue with no fewer than six vying for box office bucks. In US theatres - with Australian cinemas soon to follow - are The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, which tells the story of a forbidden friendship between the son of a Nazi officer and a Jewish boy imprisoned in a concentration camp; The Reader, which stars Kate Winslet as a former concentration-camp guard on trial years after the war; and Adam Resurrected, which follows a Holocaust survivor (Jeff Goldblum) living in a mental institution. Valkyrie, which opened on Christmas Day, stars Tom Cruise as a German officer who heads up a plan to kill Hitler.

Why `They Hate the 1950s: A Favorite Hollywood Punching Bag
New York Post

Oh, no. Really? Again? Ten minutes into "Revolutionary Road," director Sam Mendes delivers his nightmare vision of starched gray men suited up for corporate life sentences as they parade in suffering slo-mo through a sepulchral Grand Central Terminal. Repression. Conformity. Let's drink a glass of lunch and toast our Formica souls. It's the '50s. Can they really have been that miserable? This film's contempt for the vast majority of American lives is nearly absolute. Just a couple of generations ago, the idea that we must all find our jobs delightful or spiritually engaging would have seemed laughable.

Israel Cant Defeat Iran, Says Former High-Ranking General
Ynet News (Israel)

Israeli officials have been repeatedly warning that Israel may end up attacking Iran, yet former National Security Council Chairman Giora Eiland says such strike would not eliminate Tehran's nuclear program. Speaking at a conference of the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University, Eiland says Israel cannot defeat Iran's regime via a military operation The former general said that Israel "cannot defeat Iran," adding that an Israeli military operation or aerial strike cannot force Iran to capitulate or end its nuclear development efforts.

Why Do They Hate the West So Much, We Will Ask
Robert Fisk The Independent (Britain)

So once again, Israel has opened the gates of hell to the Palestinians. Forty civilian refugees dead in a United Nations school, three more in another. Not bad for a night's work in Gaza by the army that believes in "purity of arms". But why should we be surprised? Israel claims it is fighting our war against "international terror". The Israelis claim they are fighting in Gaza for us, for our Western ideals, for our security, for our safety, by our standards. And so we are also complicit in the savagery now being visited upon Gaza.

Bringing the Arab-Israeli War Home
Michael Scheuer

... The American people should be livid, though, with their bipartisan political elite and the Israel-firsters at Commentary, the New York Times, National Review, the Weekly Standard, and the Washington Post, as well as that hive of anti-American U.S. citizens that fund and lead AIPAC, for involving them in this barbarous mess Those Americans will be killed because their political and media leaders corrupted to the bone by AIPAC have involved them in a religious war that threatens nothing vital to their country's principles or national security, their personal economic well-being, or their children's lives. And worse is yet to come.

Merry Christmas Movies . . . Not!
Edmund Connelly

Today Ill talk about how that has affected the kind of Hollywood films we get with respect to Christmas. In essence, it means that in the last forty or so years, the Christian aspect of the holiday has vanished on screen. The best we can hope for is a positive, feel-good portrayal of the season Finally, this brings us to Christmas this year. More than ever, the focus will be on Jewish themes rather than Christian. As a recent New York Times article admitted, Holocaust-themed Christmas releases have been the norm for years.

Roman Battlefield Discovery in Germany Could Re-Write History
CNN

Archaeologists have found more than 600 relics from a huge battle between a Roman army and Barbarians in the third century, long after historians believed Rome had given up control of northern Germany. "We have to write our history books new, because what we thought was that the activities of the Romans ended at nine or 10 (years) after Christ," said Lutz Stratmann, science minister for the German state of Lower Saxony. "Now we know that it must be 200 or 250 after that."

A Memo to Obama on Israel
Uri Avnery (Israel)

Unfortunately, all your predecessors since 1967 have played a double game. While paying lip service to peace, and sometimes going through the motions of making some effort for peace, they have in practice supported our [Israeli] governments in moving in the very opposite direction. In particular, they have given tacit approval to the building and enlargement of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian and Syrian territories, each of which is a land mine on the road to peace. All the settlements are illegal in international law. The distinction sometimes made between "illegal" outposts and the other settlements is a propaganda ploy designed to obscure this simple truth.

Hitler at Center of Austrias City of Culture Campaign
The Telegraph (Britain)

Adolf Hitler is one of the last names you would expect to be deployed in a tourism marketing campaign. But the Fuehrer has been given centre stage by the next European City of Culture But the Austrian city of Linz, with no lederhosen version of the Fab Four to exploit, has instead decided to showcase the works of the architect of the Third Reich. The Nazi leader spent nine years of his childhood in the city which he loved so much he intended to make it the location for a magnificent five star Adolf Hitler Hotel. He had also proposed building a 162-metre high bell tower in Linz to house the remains of his parents.

Obama: `Americas First Jewish President
James Petras

According to a nationally prominent Zionist spokesperson, former Congressman, Federal Judge, White House Counsel to President Bill Clinton and early backer of Obama, Abner Mikvner, Barack Obama is the first Jewish President. Mikvners affirmation reflects both Obamas one-sided and longstanding commitment to the State of Israel and loyalty to the Zionist Power Configuration (ZPC) in the United States, as well as the long-term and successful effort of a network of financially and politically powerful Jewish Zionists to embed Obama to their Israel First political apparatus.

Israel's 'Fait Accompli' in Gaza
Eric Margolis

There are two completely different versions of what is currently happening in Gaza. In the Israeli and North American press version, Hamas "Islamic terrorists" backed by Iran have in an unprovoked attack fired deadly rockets on innocent Israel with the intent of destroying the Jewish state. North American politicians and the media say Israel "has the right to defend itself." As usual, this cartoon-like version of events omits a great deal of nuance and background. While firing rockets at civilians is a crime so, too, is the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which is an egregious violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions.

Understanding the Gaza Catastrophe
Richard Falk

The American public in particular gets 99% of its information filtered through an exceedingly pro-Israeli media lens. Hamas is blamed for the breakdown of the truce by its supposed unwillingness to renew it, and by the alleged increased incidence of rocket attacks. But the reality is more clouded There are two conclusions that emerge: the people of Gaza are being severely victimized for reasons remote from the rockets and border security concerns, but seemingly to improve election prospects of current leaders now facing defeat, and to warn others in the region that Israel will use overwhelming force whenever its interests are at stake.

Israels Invasion of Gaza a `Monstrosity, Says UN Leader
Sydney Morning Herald (Australia)

In an extraordinary outburst, the president of the United Nations General Assembly has branded Israel's ground offensive in Gaza a "monstrosity" and a marked failure for the UN. Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, of Nicaragua, blasted the Israeli action on Saturday as the UN Security Council convened its third Gaza emergency session. "I think it's a monstrosity; there's no other way to name it," Mr Brockmann said. "Once again, the world is watching in dismay the dysfunctionality of the Security Council." His remarks were seen as putting a slight upon the United States, which again prevented the council from issuing an agreed statement on the crisis.

U.S. Debt Expected To Soar This Year
The Washington Post

With President-elect Barack Obama and congressional Democrats considering a massive spending package aimed at pulling the nation out of recession, the national debt is projected to jump by as much as $2 trillion this year, an unprecedented increase that could test the world's appetite for financing U.S. government spending. For now, investors are frantically stuffing money into the relative safety of the U.S. Treasury, which has come to serve as the world's mattress in troubled times. Interest rates on Treasury bills have plummeted to historic lows, with some short-term investors literally giving the government money for free.

Will There Be a Recovery?
Paul Craig Roberts

Unlike the US, other countries are free of the hubris of being the indispensable nation. They know how hard it is to be successful and do not treat success as their birthright. They do not give away their economy for nebulous foreign policy goals or for short-term profits. They look ahead 20, 30 years while Americas CEOs look to the next quarters profits. The United States is walking on quicksand. It is dependent on foreigners for the funding to conduct the day-to-day operations of its government. Its economy is a hollow shell reduced to dependence on a financial sector that is discredited worldwide.

How Relevant is Holocaust Revisionism?
Mark Weber

Despite a discouraging record of achievement, some revisionists insist that their work is vitally important because success in exposing the Holocaust as a hoax will deliver a shattering blow to Israel and Jewish-Zionist power. This view, however, is based on a mistaken understanding of the relationship between Holocaust remembrance and Jewish-Zionist power Setting straight the historical record about the wartime fate of Europes Jews is a worthy endeavor. But there should be no illusions about its social-political relevance. In the real world struggle against Jewish-Zionist power, Holocaust revisionism has proved to be as much a hindrance as a help.

Mexico Under Siege: Mistrust Bedevils War on Cartels
Josh Meyer -- Los Angeles Times

The U.S. has begun pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into Mexico to help stanch the expansion of drug-fueled violence and corruption that has claimed more than 5,000 lives south of the border this year. The bloodshed has spread to American cities, even to the heartland, and U.S. officials are realizing that their fight against powerful drug cartels responsible for the carnage has come down to this: Either walk away or support Mexican President Felipe Calderon's strategy, even with the risk that counter-narcotics intelligence, equipment and training could end up in the hands of cartel bosses.

Leaders Lie, Civilians Die, and Lessons of History are Ignored
Robert Fisk -- The Independent (Britain)

We've got so used to the carnage of the Middle East that we don't care any more - providing we don't offend the Israelis. It's not clear how many of the Gaza dead are civilians, but the response of the Bush administration, not to mention the pusillanimous reaction of Gordon Brown, reaffirm for Arabs what they have known for decades: however they struggle against their antagonists, the West will take Israel's side. As usual, the bloodbath was the fault of the Arabs - who, as we all know, only understand force.

More Than 100,000 Massacred by Allies During Korean War
The Telegraph (Britain)

More than 100,000 South Korean civilians were massacred by allied troops fighting alongside Britain and the US in the Korean War, an official investigation has revealed. Authorities in the country have discovered mass burial sites containing thousands of bodies, including scores of children. Trawls of records including declassified files in Washington have uncovered evidence of the massacres of at least 100,000 people suspected of having sympathy with the North Koreans. In some cases, American forces are alleged to have been present and in at least one case an American officer authorised a massacre of prisoners believed to have left-wing sympathies.

Stalin Voted Third-Greatest Russian
BBC News

Former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin was beaten by medieval prince Alexander Nevsky in a poll held by a TV station to find the greatest Russian. Stalin came third, despite being responsible for the deaths of millions of Soviets in labour camps and purges. Alexander Nevsky fought off European invaders in the 13th century to preserve a united Russia. In second place was reformist Prime Minister Pyotr Stolypin, who was assassinated in 1911. More than 50 million people voted by phone, the internet or via text messages in the poll held by Rossiya, one of Russia's biggest television stations.

Beware of Obama's Groundhog Day
John Pilger

Having campaigned with Change you can believe in, President-elect Barack Obama has named his A-team. They include Hillary Clinton, who voted to attack Iraq without reading the intelligence assessment and has since threatened to totally obliterate Iran on behalf of a foreign power, Israel. During his primary campaign, Obama referred repeatedly to Clinton's lies about her political record. When he appointed her secretary of state, he called her my dear friend. Obama's slogan is now continuity.

Samuel Huntington, Author of The Clash of Civilizations, is Dead
The Times (Britain)

For millions of ordinary readers, as for conservative politicians and pundits, Samuel Huntington was the man who predicted the grand narrative of the 21st century In his last book, Who Are We? (2004), he cautioned against the enemy within. Americas national identity, he argued, was in danger of being eroded in the face of sub-national, dual national, and transnational loyalties. Writing for a popular audience, as a patriot and a scholar, Huntington argued that some Americans, most notably liberal elites and Hispanics, were undermining Americas fundamentally Anglo-Protestant culture.

Mass Commemorates Croatian Wartime Leader Ante Pavelic
Agence France Presses

About 100 admirers of a World War II pro-Nazi Croatian leader have celebrated a mass in his memory in a Zagreb church, a local newspaper reported. The service, honouring the 49th anniversary of the death of Ante Pavelic, was conducted on Sunday in the Roman Catholic basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the centre of the Croatian capital by its rector, the Jutarnji List newspaper said. Pavelic headed an independent Croat state, recognised by German and Italian dictators Hitler and Mussolini, from 1941 to 1945.

Spain is `Fully Committed to Holocaust Remembrance
The Jerusalem Post

On December 17 Spain became a full member of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance, and Research (ITF). The approval of our candidacy by the ITF Plenary in Vienna, sponsored by Israel and France, put a successful end to a journey that started in 2005 when we joined as an invited country and continued in December 2006 when we became observers. Later on that same year, the new education law brought the Shoah into the official curricula, including a mandatory commitment to train teachers so that they can properly transmit knowledge to secondary education students.

America Needs To Go To Rehab
Eric Margolis

Before we discuss whats left of the economy, a few words about one brave man. The shoes Iraqi journalist Muntader al-Zaidi threw at George Bush in Baghdad had more courage and truth in them than all the honeyed, sycophantic words of Americas fawning media The Feds recent slashing of US interest rates to zero is a sign of utter desperation and an act of folly. Once investors realize that Europe, Canada and Asia are far safer investments than the US, watch for the US dollar to nosedive as it should. The United States needs serious rehab from the stimulating drug of cheap credit. The remedy for Americas economic ills is not more money but patience, saving, and endurance.

Obama Vs Richard Falk on Israel and Occupied Palestine
Stephen Lendman

Obama leaves no ambiguity where he stands. From public statements, campaign pledges, policy advisors, and war cabinet selections, his positions affirm: one-sided pro-Israeli zealotry; continued Palestinian oppression; no end to the Iraq war and occupation; acquiescing and remaining silent after Israel insulted a high UN official by harassing and detaining him, then expelling him from the country.

Bush, Obama and the Gaza Blitz
Patrick J. Buchanan

Obama should denounce the collective punishment of 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza, by Israels cutting off their electricity in the dead of winter and denying them the food and medicine many need to survive. For us to remain silent in the face of this comports neither with our interests or our values. Israels policy of withholding from the weak and innocent of Gaza, women and children, the necessities of life, to punish the guilty who rule at the point of a gun, is a policy that Obama should declare the United States will no longer support with tax dollars.

Soviets Stole H-Bomb Secrets From US, Says New Book
United Press International

Moscow acquired the secret of the hydrogen bomb from an atomic spy at the Los Alamos weapons lab in New Mexico, a new book says. "The Nuclear Express: A Political History of the Bomb and its Proliferation", by Thomas C. Reed and Danny B. Stillman, does not name the suspected spy, but says he was born in the United States, grew up in a foreign country, fell in with communist sympathizers during the Depression and worked at Los Alamos during World War II. Afterward, he became "deeply involved" in the U.S. effort to develop the H-bomb, the book says.

Wiesel Foundation Loses Nearly Everything in Madoff Scheme
Agence France Presse

The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity lost more than 15 million dollars -- nearly all of its assets -- in the alleged fraud scheme run by Wall Street baron Bernard Madoff, the fund said Wednesday. "We are writing to inform you that the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity had 15.2 million dollars under management with Bernard Madoff Investment Securities," said the foundation, which aims to combat anti-Semitism, on its website. "This represented substantially all of the Foundation's assets," it said. "We are deeply saddened and distressed that we, along with many others, have been the victims of what may be one of the largest investment frauds in history."

Estonia SS Calendar Prompts Russian Protests
The Telegraph (Britain)

Estonia has dared to publish a calendar featuring wartime SS recruitment posters in a move that risks provoking a furious response from the tiny Baltic state's neighbour Russia. / The 2009 calendar, which sold out in three days in the capital Tallinn before being reprinted, is illustrated with 12 reproductions of SS posters used during the war to attract Estonian volunteers to join the elite Nazi force which fought the Red Army. It pictures soldiers in German uniforms and helmets with collar badges used by Estonian members of the SS.

Zionist ADL Defends Israels Special `Law of Return
Jewish Telegraphic Agency (New York)

The Anti-Defamation League has asked the U.S. attorney general to ensure that Israel's Law of Return is not used to deny bail to Jewish defendants. In a letter to Michael Mukasey, an Orthodox Jew, ADL National Director Abraham Foxman took note of a federal magistrate judge's recent denial of bail to the former manager of the Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant. The judge, Jon Scoles, ruled that Rubashkin posed a risk of flight and declined to release him on bail, pointing to evidence that he had a travel bag with cash and travel documents on hand at the time of his arrest.
