December 2008 Headlines
Time to Reboot America
Thomas Friedman The New York Times

Landing at Kennedy Airport from Hong Kong was, as Ive argued before, like going from the Jetsons to the Flintstones For all these reasons, our present crisis is not just a financial meltdown crying out for a cash injection. We are in much deeper trouble. In fact, we as a country have become General Motors as a result of our national drift. Look in the mirror: G.M. is us. Thats why we dont just need a bailout. We need a reboot. We need a build out. We need a buildup. We need a national makeover. That is why the next few months are among the most important in U.S. history.

Israel's War Crimes
Richard Falk

The Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip represent severe and massive violations of international humanitarian law as defined in the Geneva Conventions, both in regard to the obligations of an Occupying Power and in the requirements of the laws of war. Those violations include: Collective punishment: The entire 1.5 million people who live in the crowded Gaza Strip are being punished for the actions of a few militants; Targeting civilians: The airstrikes were aimed at civilian areas in one of the most crowded stretches of land in the world, certainly the most densely populated area of the Middle East; Disproportionate military response

The Neighborhood Bully Strikes Again: Gaza Under Attack
Gideon Levy Haaretz (Israel)

Israel embarked yesterday on yet another unnecessary, ill-fated war Two and a half years later, these words repeat themselves, to our horror, with chilling precision. Within the span of a few hours on a Saturday afternoon, the IDF [Israel armed forces] sowed death and destruction on a scale that the Qassam rockets never approached in all their years, and Operation "Cast Lead" is only in its infancy. Once again, Israel's violent responses, even if there is justification for them, exceed all proportion and cross every red line of humaneness, morality, international law and wisdom. What began yesterday in Gaza is a war crime and the foolishness of a country.

US Military Preparing for Domestic Disturbances

A new report from the U.S. Army War College discusses the use of American troops to quell civil unrest brought about by a worsening economic crisis. The report from the War Colleges Strategic Studies Institute warns that the U.S. military must prepare for a violent, strategic dislocation inside the United States that could be provoked by unforeseen economic collapse or loss of functioning political and legal order. Entitled Known Unknowns: Unconventional Strategic Shocks in Defense Strategy Development, the report was produced by Nathan Freier, a recently retired Army lieutenant colonel who is a professor at the college.

Unrest Caused By Bad Economy May Require Military Action, Says US Report
El Paso Times (Texas)

A U.S. Army War College report warns an economic crisis in the United States could lead to massive civil unrest and the need to call on the military to restore order. Retired Army Lt. Col. Nathan Freir wrote the report Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities ... to defend basic domestic order and human security," the report said, in case of "unforeseen economic collapse," "pervasive public health emergencies," and "catastrophic natural and human disasters," among other possible crises. The report also suggests the new administration could face a "strategic shock" within the first eight months in office.

Jewish Groups Complain of YouTube Videos on Waffen SS
The Telegraph (Britain)

The scenes, which are accompanied by militaristic music, have drawn millions of hits. YouTube, which hosts film clips from the public, has 2,800 items on the Waffen SS, the most fanatical of Hitler's soldiers who were indicted for war crimes throughout the Second World War. The entries have a string of 'Sieg Heil' comments and praise for the fighting prowess of the Waffen SS, recruited for their dedication to Nazism. The videos, some from Nazi propaganda news reels, have provoked the anger of Jewish organisations which called for YouTube to remove the "hugely offensive" postings

As if Things Weren't Bad Enough, Russian Professor Predicts End of U.S.
The Wall Street Journal

For a decade, Russian academic Igor Panarin has been predicting the U.S. will fall apart in 2010. For most of that time, he admits, few took his argument -- that an economic and moral collapse will trigger a civil war and the eventual breakup of the U.S. -- very seriously. Now he's found an eager audience: Russian state media Mr. Panarin posits, in brief, that mass immigration, economic decline, and moral degradation will trigger a civil war next fall and the collapse of the dollar. Around the end of June 2010, or early July, he says, the U.S. will break into six pieces -- with Alaska reverting to Russian control.

A New Look at a World War II Massacre of Germans
Agence France Presse

For over 50 years, the inhabitants of this small east German town of Treuenbrietzen kept quiet about a World War II massacre. And many today still have no wish to revisit the past. The long-forgotten slaughter of some 1,000 German civilians occurred after Russian Red Army soldiers occupied the town, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) southwest of Berlin, in April 1945, in the final days of the war. Under East German communist rule, it would have been unwise to mention the matter.

Avraham Burg Now a Pariah in Israel for Raising Nazi Parallels
The New York Times

But four years ago Burg not only walked away from politics. He pretty much walked away from Zionism. In a book that came out last year, and has just been translated and released in the United States, he [Avraham Burg] said Israel should not be a Jewish state, that its law of return granting citizenship to any Jew should be radically altered, that Israeli Arabs were like German Jews during the Second Reich and that, in fact, the entire society felt eerily like Germany just before the rise of Hitler.

Vendee French Call for Revolution Massacre to be Termed `Genocide
The Telegraph (Britain)

It was one of the most infamous episodes of the bloody French Revolution. In early 1794 at the height of the Reign of Terror French soldiers marched to the Atlantic Vende, where peasants had risen up against the Revolutionary government in Paris. Twelve "infernal columns" commanded by General Louis-Marie Turreau were ordered to kill everyone and everything they saw. Thousands of people including women and children were massacred in cold blood, and farms and villages torched.

Southerners Are Missing in Obamas Cabinet
McClatchy newspapers

There are Democrats and Republicans, liberals and moderates, Hispanics and Asians, whites and blacks, Northerners and Westerners. But one group arguably was missing when President-elect Barack Obama rounded out his 15-member Cabinet Friday Southerners. The only Southern appointment came when he named former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk U.S. trade representative, a lower-level post. Nobody else from below the Mason-Dixon Line made the cut, not even from the newly blue states of North Carolina, Virginia or Florida.

Two British Refugees Still Held in California

Two men who fled Britain to avoid imprisonment or fines after having been convicted of violating "race hate" laws are still being held in detention in southern California. On July 11 a court in Leeds, England, found Simon Sheppard, 51, and Stephen Whittle, 41, guilty of multiple counts of publishing "racially inflammatory" material on the internet. Upon their arrival at Los Angeles airport on July 13, the pair -- known as the "Heretical Two," after their website -- asked for political asylum in the United States, where their "inflammatory" writings are constitutionally protected. They are being held in Santa Ana Jail, 62 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, CA 92701, USA.

We Have No Words Left: The Catastrophe in Gaza
Ali Abunimah -- The Guardian (Britain)

Israel says it is acting in "retaliation" for rockets fired with increasing intensity ever since a six-month truce expired on 19 December. But the bombs dropped on Gaza are only a variation in Israel's method of killing Palestinians. In recent months they died mostly silent deaths, the elderly and sick especially, deprived of food, cancer treatments and other medicines by an Israeli blockade that targeted 1.5 million people mostly refugees and children - caged into the Gaza Strip. The orders of Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, to hold back medicine were just as lethal and illegal as those to send in the warplanes.

Missing Word in 1967 Resolution Sowed Seeds of Catastrophe
Robert Fisk -- The Independent (Britain)

United Nations Security Council Resolution 242. This, you'll recall, was supposed to be the resolution that would guide all future peace efforts in the Middle East; Oslo was supposed to have been founded on it and all sorts of other processes and summits and road maps. It was passed in November 1967, after Israel had occupied Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Sinai and Golan, and it emphasises "the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war" and calls for "withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict".

Prominent French Comedian Gives Award to `Denier Faurisson
The Independent (Britain)

The black French comedian, Dieudonn, provoked outrage at the weekend by giving a heroism award on stage before 5,000 people to a veteran Holocaust negationist. Dieudonn, 42, who has a conviction for making anti-Semitic remarks, handed the spoof award for social unacceptability and insolence to Robert Faurisson, an octogenarian academic who has a string of convictions in France for denying the existence of Nazi death camps in World War II.

Holocaust Survivor's Love Story Exposed as a Fraud
The Telegraph (Britain)

Herman Rosenblat's Angel at the Fence has been withdrawn by its publisher, Berkley Books, an imprint of Penguin, following allegations by scholars, relatives and fellow survivors about its veracity. Those taken in by the hoax include the producers of a forthcoming feature film adaptation and the television host Oprah Winfrey, who had hailed the tale as the "single greatest love story... we've ever told on the air".

Nazi, Holocaust Themes Dominate Holiday Cinema Season
The Associated Press

'Tis the season to gather, be grateful for what we have and share what we can. But for cinephiles, it's awards season, and that means dreary fare particularly with a World War II or Holocaust focus. No fewer than six are set for release this holiday season Indeed, Holocaust-themed holiday releases have fared well with academy voters for decades.

A Mossad Daughter Jailed For Refusing Israeli Military Service
Omer Goldman -- The Financial Times (Britain)

I first went to prison on September 23 of this year and served 35 days. By the time you read this, I will be back inside for another 21. This is going to be my life for the next two years: in for three weeks, out for one. I am 19 years old now and by the time the authorities give up hounding me, I will be 21. The reason? I refused to do my military service for the Israeli army.

The Madoff Victims: They Deserved It
Daniel McGowan

As the news of Bernard Madoff's colossal fraud focused on America's most "important" Jewish tycoons and moguls, it was only a matter of hours before the story was spun around their victimhood with the usual cudgels of "anti-Semitism" and the Holocaust As the list of Madoff's "victims" grows, their common characteristic is not philanthropy, but rather political Zionism. Virtually all have worked to build a Jewish state with little regard, and often downright hatred, for the non-Jewish population living there. The money from this type of mogul or "ganzer macher" has been used to dehumanize and depopulate non-Jews in Palestine for over 120 years.

Bailed-Out Banks' Execs Got $1.6 Billion
The Associated Press

Banks that are getting taxpayer bailouts awarded their top executives nearly $1.6 billion in salaries, bonuses, and other benefits last year, an Associated Press analysis reveals. The rewards came even at banks where poor results last year foretold the economic crisis that sent them to Washington for a government rescue. Some trimmed their executive compensation due to lagging bank performance, but still forked over multimillion-dollar executive pay packages. Benefits included cash bonuses, stock options, personal use of company jets and chauffeurs, home security, country club memberships and professional money management

Bush Pardons Man Who Helped Zionists in 1948 War
BBC News

US President George W Bush has granted a rare posthumous pardon to a man who broke the law to supply aircraft to Jews fighting for the state of Israel. Charles Winters served 18 months in prison for violating the US Neutrality Act by helping to deliver in 1948 two converted B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. In 1961, then Israeli Foreign Minister Golda Meir commended Mr Winters for his contribution to her country's survival. Two others convicted with him in 1949 were pardoned by previous presidents. President John F Kennedy pardoned Herman Greenspun in 1961, and President Bill Clinton pardoned Al Schwimmer in 2000.

Cheney Admits Authorizing Detainee's Torture
Raw Story

Monday, outgoing Vice President Dick Cheney made a startling statement on a nation-wide, televised broadcast. When asked by ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl whether he approved of interrogation tactics used against a so-called "high value prisoner" at the controversial Guantanamo Bay prison, Mr. Cheney, in a break from his history of being press-shy, admitted to giving official sanctioning of torture. I supported it," he said regarding the practice known as "water-boarding," a form of simulated drowning. After World War II, Japanese soldiers were tried and convicted of war crimes in US courts for water-boarding

`Its Kristallnacht Two!: An Ethnic Cleansing in America
Alexander Cockburn

In terms of financial and psychological impact, Bernard Maddows $50 billion heist certainly ranks as a major ethnic cleansing here in America, a hugely traumatic event for American Jewry. Of course Madoff had clients of every creed and nation, but he made a specialty of trolling for Jewish money Uncle Sam is the biggest Ponzi operator of all, with the added magical power denied Madoff (unless forgery was among his talents) of being able to print money at will This was no one-man operation, run after hours by Madoff with a secret ledger. No one person can single-handedly run a $50 billion business, even one with cooked books. This was a family business.

Citizenship in Israel at Center of Bail Fight
The Wall Street Journal

The Justice Department is contending that a Jewish defendant in Iowa should be denied bail in part because he, like all Jews, is entitled to Israeli citizenship if he seeks to immigrate to the Jewish state. The argument against the defendant, Sholom Rubashkin, could in theory apply to all Jewish criminal suspects. Mr. Rubashkin faces multiple charges related to the alleged hiring of illegal immigrants at a kosher meatpacking plant he formerly headed in Postville, Iowa.

Most Big U.S. Banks `Bankrupt, Says Prominent Investor Rogers

Jim Rogers, one of the world's most prominent international investors, on Thursday called most of the largest U.S. banks "totally bankrupt," and said government efforts to fix the sector are wrongheaded. Speaking by teleconference at the Reuters Investment Outlook 2009 Summit, the co-founder with George Soros of the Quantum Fund, said the government's $700 billion rescue package for the sector doesn't address how banks manage their balance sheets, and instead rewards weaker lenders with new capital.

Israel Discount Bank of New York Laundered Billions in 2004-5
The Jerusalem Post (Israel)

US regulators fined the New York subsidiary of Israel Discount Bank Ltd., the country's third- largest lender, $12 million for violating federal and state laws designed to thwart money laundering. Israel Discount Bank of New York failed to set up an adequate program to identify and report money laundering, the federal and state regulators said.

Secret of the Lusitania: It Was Carrying Munitions
Daily Mail (Britain)

Her sinking with the loss of almost 1,200 lives caused such outrage that it propelled the U.S. into the First World War. But now divers have revealed a dark secret about the cargo carried by the Lusitania on its final journey in May 1915. Munitions they found in the hold suggest that the Germans had been right all along in claiming the ship was carrying war materials and was a legitimate military target. The Cunard vessel, steaming from New York to Liverpool, was sunk eight miles off the Irish coast by a U-boat. Maintaining that the Lusitania was solely a passenger vessel, the British quickly accused the 'Pirate Hun' of slaughtering civilians.

New Warnings of Economic Riots and Civil Unrest
Chelsea Schilling -- WorldNetDaily

Pentagon resources and U.S. troops may be used if needed to quell protests and bank runs during an economic crisis, the U.S. Army War College's Strategic Institute reported. "Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremis to defend basic domestic order and human security," the War College study states ... Last month, trends forecaster Gerald Celente told Fox News that America will morph into the first "undeveloped" nation of the world by 2012. He said there will be a tax revolution marked by "food riots, squatter rebellion, tax revolts and job marches."

Major Israeli Settlement 'Unlawful'
BBC News

Israeli settlements on occupied territory are seen as illegal by the rest of the world. But now an Israeli human rights group is saying that even under Israeli law, one of the most significant and well-established settlements is unlawful. The human rights group B'tselem has published a report in which it states that almost 60 percent of the settlement of Ofra has been built on land which remains in private Palestinian ownership. The settlement was established in 1975, just to the north-east of Ramallah.

Israeli Blockade 'Forces Palestinians to Search Rubbish Dumps for Food'
The Observer (Britain)

Impoverished Palestinians on the Gaza Strip are being forced to scavenge for food on rubbish dumps to survive as Israel's economic blockade risks causing irreversible damage, according to international observers. Figures released last week by the UN Relief and Works Agency reveal that the economic blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza in July last year has had a devastating impact on the local population.

General Patton Was Murdered, Says Historian
The Telegraph (Britain)

The newly unearthed diaries of a colourful assassin for the wartime Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA, reveal that American spy chiefs wanted Patton dead because he was threatening to expose allied collusion with the Russians that cost American lives. The death of General Patton in December 1945, is one of the enduring mysteries of the war era. Although he had suffered serious injuries in a car crash in Manheim, he was thought to be recovering and was on the verge of flying home. But after a decade-long investigation, military historian Robert Wilcox claims that OSS head General "Wild Bill" Donovan ordered a highly decorated marksman called Douglas Bazata to silence Patton

My Expulsion From Israel
Richard Falk -- The Guardian (Britain)

On December 14, I arrived at Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv, Israel to carry out my UN role as special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories It is the character of the occupation that gives rise to sharp criticism of Israel's approach, especially its harsh blockade of Gaza, resulting in the collective punishment of the 1.5 million inhabitants The blockade of Gaza serves no legitimate Israeli function. It is supposedly imposed in retaliation for some Hamas and Islamic Jihad rockets that have been fired across the border at the Israeli town of Sderot.

In Madoff We Trust: Faith in the US Government
Peter Schiff

The United States Government runs its own balance sheet based on the Ponzi principal as well. Our national debt always grows and never shrinks. As existing debt matures, proceeds are repaid by issuing new debt. Interest payments on existing debt are also made by selling new debt to investors. The whole scheme depends on an ever growing supply of new lenders, or the willingness of existing lenders, to continue to roll over maturing notes Like those unfortunate to have been duped by Madoff and Ponzi, the world is in for a rude awakening.

How Jewish is Hollywood?
Joel Stein Los Angeles Times

I have never been so upset by a poll in my life. Only 22 percent of Americans now believe "the movie and television industries are pretty much run by Jews," down from nearly 50% in 1964. The Anti-Defamation League, which released the poll results last month, sees in these numbers a victory against stereotyping. Actually, it just shows how dumb America has gotten. Jews totally run Hollywood ... I don't care if Americans think we're running the news media, Hollywood, Wall Street or the government. I just care that we get to keep running them.

The Shah of Iran Speaks Bluntly About the Jewish Lobby
CBS 60 Minutes

In this 1976 interview, the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlevi, speaks to Mike Wallace about the power in the US of the Jewish lobby. It is strong, he says, and is controlling many things, including newspapers, medias, banks, finance. And the Shah agrees when asked if the Jewish community in the US makes the media reflect their view of foreign policy.

US Increases Afghan Troop Pledge
BBC News

The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff says up to 30,000 extra troops could be sent to Afghanistan in 2009, almost doubling the US presence. "Some 20 to 30,000 is the window of overall increase from where we are right now," Adm Mike Mullen said. The timeframe of deployment has also been shortened, with reinforcements set to arrive by summer at the latest. On Friday, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates ordered the deployment of a combat aviation brigade by spring. There are currently 31,000 US troops in the country, 14,000 of whom are part of the 51,000-strong Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf).

Obama's War
Patrick J. Buchanan

Just two months after the twin towers fell, the armies of the Northern Alliance marched into Kabul. The Taliban fled. The triumph was total in the "splendid little war" that had cost one U.S. casualty. Or so it seemed. Yet, last month, the war against the Taliban entered its eighth year, the second longest war in our history, and America and NATO have never been nearer to strategic defeat ... Of all the lands of the earth, Afghanistan has been among the least hospitable to foreigners who come to rule, or to teach them how they should rule themselves.

US Costs of Iraq, Afghan Wars Top $900 Billion

U.S. military operations, including the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, have cost $904 billion since 2001 and could top $1.7 trillion by 2018, even with big cuts in overseas troop deployments, a report said on Monday. A new study released by the nonpartisan Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, or CSBA, said the Iraq conflict's $687 billion price tag alone now exceeds the cost of every past U.S. war except for World War II, when expenditures are adjusted for inflation. With another $184 billion in spending for Afghanistan included, the two conflicts surpass the cost of the Vietnam War by about 50 percent, the report said.

Roosevelt's 'Secret Map' Speech
Mark Weber Institute for Historical Review

Franklin Roosevelt often lied to further his goals. In a radio address broadcast to the nation on October 23, 1940, for example, he gave "this most solemn assurance" that he had not given any "secret understanding in any shape or form, direct or indirect, with any government or any other nation in any part of the world, to involve this nation in any war or for any other purpose." ... This "most solemn assurance" was a bald-faced lie. Roosevelt had, in fact, made numerous secret arrangements to involve the U.S. in war. Of all his speeches, perhaps the best example of Roosevelt's readiness to lie is his 1941 Navy Day address broadcast over nationwide radio on October 27.

Canada Court Upholds $40,000 Defamation Award Against Paul Fromm
The Globe and Mail (Canada)

Human-rights crusader Richard Warman has dealt a serious financial blow to one of the best-known figures on the far right, Paul Fromm, with a $40,000 defamation judgment from the Ontario Court of Appeal. In a ruling released yesterday, the court upheld a trial award of $30,000 and added $10,000 in legal costs. Mr. Fromm, a self-styled free-speech advocate, immediately sought help from his supporters to pay the award and to finance a potential appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Federal Spending Soars 25% in 2008, Before Bailout
The Washington Times

The government's spending commitments exploded by 25 percent in 2008, putting taxpayers more than $1 trillion in the hole even before the astronomical costs of the economic bailout were taken into account, according to an annual report released Monday by the White House. A joint report by the White House budget office and Treasury Department said that much of the increase in obligations came from an unexpected jump in veterans benefits liabilities, while revenues remained mostly flat ...The report showed that U.S. debts and liabilities are close to passing the value of the U.S. population's net worth, said Peter G. Peterson Foundation ...

David Irving: `Independent Mind British Television Interview
Channel 4 (Britain) -- Part 1

In this interview, British historian David Irving speaks about his contrarian personality, the origins of his fascination with Hitler, his arrest in Austria in 2005, his views on the Holocaust, and more. This is one of eight interviews in a special documentary, An Independent Mind, hosted by Jonathan Miller, foreign correspondent of Channel 4 News (Britain).

Region-Side Latin Summit Excludes the United States: End of a Legacy?

Latin American and Caribbean leaders gathering in Brazil mark a historic occasion: a region-wide summit that excludes the United States. Almost two centuries after President James Monroe declared Latin America a U.S. sphere of influence, the region is breaking away. From socialist-leaning Venezuela to market-friendly Brazil, governments are expanding military, economic and diplomatic ties with potential U.S. adversaries such as China, Russia and Iran.

The Hossbach `Protocol: The Destruction of a Legend
Mark Weber

Hitler, we're told over and over again, set out to conquer the world, or at least Europe. At the great postwar Nuremberg Tribunal the victorious Allies sought to prove that Hitler and his "henchmen" had engaged in a sinister "Conspiracy to Wage Aggressive War." The most important piece of evidence produced to sustain this charge was and is a document known as the "Hossbach Protocol" or "Hossbach Memorandum." ... This important study leaves no doubt that the highly touted protocol is actually a forged revision of an uncertified copy of an unauthorized original, which has disappeared.

Iraq's Reconstruction a $100 Billion Failure, Says US Government Report
Agence France Presse

An unpublished US government report says US-led efforts to rebuild Iraq were crippled by bureaucratic turf wars, violence and ignorance of the basic elements of Iraqi society, resulting in a 100 billion dollar failure, The New York Times reported on its website. The newspaper said it had gotten hold of a copy of the 513-page federal history of the reconstruction effort that is circulating in Washington in draft form among a tight circle of technical reviewers, policy experts and senior officials.

Russian Air Defense Deal With Iran Reportedly Under Way

Russia is currently fulfilling a contract to deliver S-300 air defence systems to Iran, RIA news agency quoted confidential sources as saying on Wednesday. In October Russia's Foreign Ministry denied media speculation that Moscow would sell the S-300 system, which could help the Islamic republic fend off air strikes by arch foes Israel and the United States on its nuclear sites. A Foreign Ministry spokesman at the time said that Moscow had no intention of selling weapons to "troubled regions". But quoting unnamed sources, RIA said on Wednesday that Russia and Iran were holding talks on sales of medium-range air defence systems.

The New Revisionism: What If Hitler Won the War?
Michael Shermer Skeptic magazine

... This new revisionism aims to reconfigure the good war as the unnecessary war (Buchanan), combine the two world wars into one long ethnic and economic conflict that could have been avoided had England left Germany alone (Ferguson), and to demonstrate the moral equivalency between the Axis and the Allies in the outbreak and conductance of a war whose waging probably failed to help those who most needed it (Baker and Ferguson). Webers lecture The `Good War Myth of World War Two in fact, echoed these three mainstream historians ...

Israels Crime Against Humanity
Chris Hedges

Israel's siege of Gaza, largely unseen by the outside world because of Jerusalem's refusal to allow humanitarian aid workers, reporters and photographers access to Gaza, rivals the most egregious crimes carried out at the height of apartheid by the South African regime. It comes close to the horrors visited on Sarajevo by the Bosnian Serbs. It has disturbing echoes of the Nazi ghettos of Lodz and Warsaw. "This is a stain on what is left of Israeli morality," I was told by Richard N. Veits, the former U.S. ambassador to Jordan who led a delegation from the Council on Foreign Relations to Gaza to meet Hamas leaders this past summer.

Revoking Israel's UN Membership
Snorre Lindquist, Lasse Wilhelmson

The Gaza Strip is now the largest concentration camp in the world. The situation grows steadily more insufferable for the 1.5 million Palestinians who live there ... The international community now needs to put tangible pressure on Israel in order to stop its war crimes. Not once, during the past 60 years, has Israel shown any intention of living up to the requirements stipulated by the UN, in connection with the countrys membership in 1948, namely that the Palestinians who had been evicted from their homes should be allowed to return at the earliest possible opportunity.

YouTube Cooperating with Zionist ADL to Deal With Internet `Hate
Haaretz Service (Israel)

The widely popular video sharing website YouTube has reached out to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for its expertise in dealing with hate on the Internet. As a result of this partnership, the League is now a contributor to YouTube's newly launched Abuse & Safety Center, where users are empowered to identify and confront hate, and to report abuses. The YouTube Abuse & Safety Center features information and links to resources developed by ADL to help Internet users respond to and report offensive material and extremist content that violates YouTubes Community Guidelines on hate speech.

Churchills Secret Army Lived On
BBC News

Files released this autumn at the National Archives in Kew [England] include one dossier showing how the Special Operations Executive - Churchill's "secret army" - was not disbanded at the end of the Second World War, as is commonly thought. Instead, nearly 300 agents were brought into the Secret Intelligence Service - later MI6. Officially SOE, the organisation set up to run resistance in occupied countries, was "liquidated" in January 1946. SOE operatives were trained in all aspects of clandestine operations. They organised sabotage, guerrilla actions, black propaganda operations and financial warfare. They were active in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Intervention: A Problem of Means?
William S. Lind

... The "great foreign policy experiment" [of President Obama] will fail. It will fail for two reasons, one practical and one theoretical. The practical reason is that, no matter how much money you give them, our State Department and other civilian agencies cannot produce a product ... In fact, our offensive grand strategy is itself the root of our failures. We cannot remake societies in our own image, regardless of the means employed. Attempts to do so are doomed to failure, and so long as we insist on undertaking them, we are doomed to imperial overreach, with its inevitable consequences of decay and decline.

Israels `Law of Return Makes All US Jews Flight Risk
The Jewish Week (New York)

In a legal argument called astounding and very troublesome, a federal prosecutor has argued that Israels Law of Return makes American Jews a flight risk and therefore ineligible for bail. The claim, believed to be unprecedented, came in the bank fraud case of Sholom Rubashkin, the former Jewish head of the embattled Iowa kosher slaughterhouse, Agriprocessors, Inc. And the federal judge in the case, Magistrate Jon Stuart Scoles, cited the Law of Return in his Nov. 20 decision denying Rubashkin bail.

Obamas Foreign Policy `Change Will Be Mostly Cosmetic
Mark Weber Tehran Times (Iran)

... The appointments that Obama has made to positions in the new administration, along with his public statements of recent months, show that he is unlikely to make major changes in U.S. foreign policy. The promised change will be mostly cosmetic. His foreign policy will be familiar, but conducted more prudently and with more appealing style. During the election campaign, Obama never called into question the basic premise of U.S. military interventionism around the world. His pledge to increase U.S. military forces in Afghanistan shows that he supports the misguided war on terror, and accepts an American role as a global policeman.

Madoff Scandal Has Global Impact
The Associated Press

The list of investors who say they were duped in one of Wall Street's biggest Ponzi schemes is growing, snaring some of the world's biggest banking institutions and hedge funds, the super rich and the famous, pensioners and charities. The alleged victims who sunk cash into veteran Wall Street money manager Bernard Madoff's investment pool include real estate magnate Mortimer Zuckerman, the foundation of Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, and a charity of movie director Steven Spielberg, according to The Wall Street Journal. Among the world's biggest banking institutions, Britain's HSBC Holdings PLC, Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC and Man Group PLC ...

$600 Million in Jewish Charitable Funds Lost
The Jerusalem Post (Israel)

At least $600 million in Jewish charitable funds have been wiped out by the collapse of Bernard Madoff's Wall Street investment firm, a partial review by The Jerusalem Post revealed Monday. Yet much is still hidden about what may amount to the most spectacular financial disaster to hit Jewish life since the Great Depression, with unconfirmed losses totaling up to $1.5 billion. Furthermore, the Post's figures do not include billions of dollars lost to individual and family investors, many of whom were the primary donors to Jewish schools, synagogues and communal charities.

Across Mideast, Arabs Hail Shoe-Hurling Journalist
The Associated Press

Iraqis and other Arabs erupted in glee Monday at the shoe attack on George W. Bush. Far from a joke, many in the Mideast saw the act by an Iraqi journalist as heroic, expressing the deep, personal contempt many feel for the American leader they blame for years of bloodshed, chaos and the suffering of civilians. Images of Bush ducking the fast-flying shoes at a Baghdad press conference, aired repeatedly on Arab satellite TV networks, were cathartic for many in the Middle East, who have for years felt their own leaders kowtow to the American president. So the sight of an average Arab standing up and making a public show of resentment was stunning.

Total Defeat for Bush Administration in Iraq
Patrick Cockburn Counterpunch

On November 27 the Iraqi parliament voted by a large majority in favor of a security agreement with the US under which the 150,000 American troops in Iraq will withdraw from cities, towns and villages by June 30, 2009, and from all of Iraq by December 31, 2011 ... The Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), signed after eight months of rancorous negotiations, is categorical and unconditional. Americas bid to act as the worlds only super-power and to establish quasi-colonial control of Iraq, an attempt which began with the invasion of 2003, has ended in failure.

A Historic Moment: The Election of a Con-Man
James Petras

... Within three weeks of his election he appointed all the political dregs who brought on the unending wars of the past two decades, the economic policy makers responsible for the financial crash and the deepening recession castigating tens of millions of Americans today and for the foreseeable future. We can affirm that the election of Obama does indeed mark a historic moment in American history: The victory of the greatest con man and his accomplices and backers in recent history.

Iranian Leaders Debate Obamas Policy Freedom
Gareth Porter -- Inter Press Service

Iranian national security officials and political leaders have been carrying out an internal debate over how much freedom President-elect Barack Obama will have to change US policy toward Iran, and those who have argued that he will not be able to do so have gained the upper hand since Obama's announcement of his national security team, interviews with Iranian officials and their advisers reveal. The outcome of that debate, which is very sensitive to signals from Obama and his national security team, could be a key factor in how far Iran goes in indicating its own willingness to make concessions to Washington next year.

Church-Based Effort Aims to Counter Christian Zionism
Los Angeles Times

Before the year is up, nearly 45 million people will get more than a sermon at their churches -- they'll get a brochure titled "Why We Should Be Concerned About Christian Zionism." The brochure says Christian Zionism "fosters fear and hatred of Muslims and non-Western Christians" and "can lead to the dehumanization of Israelis and Palestinians." Its distribution reflects the concerns of Christians who are trying to combat what they call the growing influence of Christian Zionism in the U.S.

Berlins `Home Guard Vows to Defend the Homeland
The World at War - Video

At an outdoor rally in Berlin in November 1944, thousands of Volkssturm men take an oath to defend the homeland. Goebbels addresses the large gathering. The Volkssturm was Germanys home guard, made up of men not qualified for service in the regular armed forces who helped defend the nation against the final assaults from East and West. This video clip is from the 1973 World at War British television series, with film footage from the German weekly newsreel (Deutsche Wochenschau). English narration by Laurence Olivier. Runtime: 2:04 mins.

Uninsured Put a Strain on Hospitals
The New York Times

As increasing numbers of the unemployed and uninsured turn to the nations emergency rooms as a medical last resort, doctors warn that the centers -- many already overburdened -- could have even more trouble handling the heart attacks, broken bones and other traumas that define their core mission. Even before the recession became evident, many emergency rooms around the country were already overcrowded, with dangerously long waits for some patients and the frequent need to redirect ambulances to other hospitals. "We have no capacity now," said Dr. Angela F. Gardner ...

A Florida Hospital Copes With Caring for Illegal Aliens

Carol Plato of the Martin Memorial Medical Center in Stuart, Florida, testifies in April 2008 before a Florida state committee on the high cost of caring for illegal immigrants. Hospitals across the US are facing similar problems. Runtime: 3:08 mins.

Israel Preparing Options for Iran Strike
The Jerusalem Post (Israel)

The IDF [Israel Defense Forces] is drawing up options for a strike on Iranian nuclear facilities that do not include coordination with the United States, The Jerusalem Post has learned. While its preference is to coordinate with the US, defense officials have said Israel is preparing a wide range of options for such an operation. "It is always better to coordinate," one top Defense Ministry official explained last week. "But we are also preparing options that do not include coordination."

Obama to Offer Israel 'Nuclear Umbrella' Against Iranian Attack
Haaretz (Israel)

President-elect Barack Obama's administration will offer Israel a "nuclear umbrella" against the threat of a nuclear attack by Iran, a well-placed American source said earlier this week. The source, who is close to the new administration, said the U.S. will declare that an attack on Israel by Tehran would result in a devastating U.S. nuclear response against Iran. But America's nuclear guarantee to Israel could also be interpreted as a sign the U.S. believes Iran will eventually acquire nuclear arms.

Holocaust Restitution Fund Spends Millions of Survivors' Money on Itself
Haaretz (Israel)

The [Israeli] Company for Location and Restitution of Holocaust Victims Assets has burned through an operating budget of NIS 30 million [Israel shekels] in less than two years, but it is refusing to say just how much it has managed to turn over to victims and their heirs. The company was established by a law passed in December 2005, to locate and distribute assets in Israel belonging to Holocaust victims, survivors and their heirs. Some of the assets were to be distributed directly to needy survivors and survivor welfare organizations, on the assumption that only some of the owners and heirs would be found.

Banking for Lebanon's Future
BBC News -- Video report

During the current global economic and financial crisis, Lebanons economy is thriving -- in spite of a legacy of national social-political strife and the Israeli invasion of 2006. A key factor has been the rigorously prudent and conservative financial policies of the countrys banks, including its central bank. A report by Natalia Antelava for the BBC Two television program "Newsnight." Runtime: 7:13 mins.

Invoking the Holocaust to Defend the Occupation
John Mearsheimer

For American readers, the great virtue of Avraham Burg's important new book [The Holocaust is Over] is that he says things about Israel and the Jewish people that are hardly ever heard in mainstream discourse in the United States. It is hard to believe how stunted and biased the coverage of Israel is in the American media, not to mention the extent to which our politicians have perfected the art of pandering to the Jewish state ... For Burg, Israel's troubles are self-inflicted. Specifically, he maintains that the principal cause of Israel's problems is the legacy of the Holocaust, which has become omnipresent in Israeli life.

Stalin Planned to Destroy Moscow If Germans Moved In
The Telegraph (Britain)

Stalin planned to blow up more than 1,200 buildings including the Bolshoi Theatre and St Basil's Cathedral if the Nazis ever took Moscow, documents have revealed. An exhibition of secret papers staged to commemorate 90 years of military counter-intelligence showed the extraordinary lengths the Soviet high command was prepared to go to if the city fell. The documents were drawn from archives of the so-called "Moscow Plan" drawn up in the Autumn of 1941, when German forces were within 19 miles of the city.

Britain is Ready to Take Advantage of This Seismic Shift: End of Empire
Tristram Hunt -- The Observer (Britain)

To wander through modern Los Angeles is to get a keen idea of Rome in 400 AD, Venice at the end of its medieval glory or post-war London. LA is a city redolent of empire and it is visibly in collapse. It is not just the choking smog, violent ghettos or armies of homeless, but a more fin de siecle [end of century] sense that its time has passed ... It is President-elect Obama's bad luck to have to oversee the dismantling of the US empire on his watch. And it will take all his political suppleness and rhetorical genius to spell it out to the American people. But we too need to begin the process of reinterpreting our place in the world.

Toben: Back Home and Unrepentant
The Australian

Back home in Adelaide's leafy eastern suburbs, serial Holocaust revisionist Fredrick Toben is unrepentant. The grim cells of London's Wandsworth prison are a long way away, and the Holocaust denier is free once more to loudly declare the views that others find so offensive. "The Germans never systematically exterminated anyone - it's a lie," he says, sipping coffee in a Norwood cafe. "I refuse to recant." Dr Toben, 64, returned to Adelaide last week after his 50-day stay in London's Wandsworth Prison, and wasted no time in resuming his Adelaide Institute newsletter, telling his supporters of his experience.

German-Russian War Booty Disputes Still Rage
Agence France Presse

More than 60 years after the end of World War II, disputes over war booty rage on as Germany seeks, with mixed success, the return of treasures looted by the victorious Red Army. Late last month, Russia handed over six medieval stained glass church windows -- the last of a set of 117 panes from the Marienkirche (St Mary's Church) in Frankfurt an der Oder, on today's Polish border, carted off to Moscow in 1945.

How Rahm Emanuel Made Mega-Millions and Bought His Way to Power
Ben Protess -- ProPublica

Since Rahm Emanuel was appointed the next White House chief of staff last month, ProPublica has been retracing his previous life as an investment banker, which earned him more than $18 million in less than three years. The New York Times recently shed new light on Emanuel's Wall Street days -- and how they helped send him to Congress ... The cash proved helpful when Emanuel found himself in a tough fight for a seat in Congress. He contributed $450,000 out of his own pocket to the primary campaign, and his leading rival accused him of trying to buy his seat, the Times reports.

New Film Confronts Mass Rapes of German Women in World War II
The Local (Germany)

One of the long-ignored chapters of World War II hit German screens this month with a harrowing account of the mass rapes of German women by Russian soldiers as the Nazi regime crumbled around them. "Anonyma - A Woman in Berlin" stars A-list German actress Nina Hoss and has returned a victim's anonymous diary to the forefront of an extremely tentative debate about German suffering during and after the war. "There were tens of thousands (of rape victims) - that is for certain. Perhaps even hundreds of thousands," US historian Norman Naimark, director of the Center for European Studies at Stanford, told German weekly Die Zeit.

Bush Regime Declares Itself Above the Law
Paul Craig Roberts

The US government does not have a monopoly on hypocrisy, but no other government can match the hypocrisy of the US government. It is now well documented and known all over the world that the US government tortured detainees at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo and that the US government has had people kidnaped and "rendentioned," that is, transported to third world countries, such as Egypt, to be tortured ... If only American laws applied to the American government. Then the criminals who have been in charge for 8 years could be prosecuted for their extreme violation of United States laws. But, of course, the great moral American government is far above the law. American law only applies to dispensable nations.

The Night We Waved Goodbye to America
Peter Hitchens -- Daily Mail (Britain)

Anyone would think we had just elected a hip, skinny and youthful replacement for God, with a plan to modernise Heaven and Hell - or that at the very least John Lennon had come back from the dead. The swooning frenzy over the choice of Barack Obama as President of the United States must be one of the most absurd waves of self-deception and swirling fantasy ever to sweep through an advanced civilization ... And now the US, like Britain before it, has begun the long slow descent into the Third World. How sad. Where now is our last best hope on Earth?

Jewish Settlers on 'Terror' Rampage, Says Hebron Mayor

Jewish settlers are on a "terror" rampage in the West Bank city of Hebron, angry over the Israeli military's seizure of a disputed home, the city's mayor said Thursday. "What's happening in Hebron is terror by the settlers," the mayor, Khaled Osaily, told CNN. "They are attacking houses, setting fire to property and injuring people." Some of the settlers opened fire on Palestinians, critically injuring one, Palestinian sources told CNN. Five other Palestinians have been wounded in the rioting, the sources said.

Jewish Settlers to Ethiopian Troops: 'Niggers Don't Expel Jews'
YNet News (Israel)

Not only do they serve long and tiring hours in the reserve forces, and not only are they forced to deal with violent clashes with settlers, but now, Border Guard officers of Ethiopian descent are also faced with rising racism. "Niggers don't expel Jews! This isn't what we brought you to Israel for!" are just some of the degrading slurs Border Guard officers reported hearing from masked settlers.

Our Reputation - Our Fault: Israelis' Violent, Vulgar Behavior Abroad
YNet News (Israel)

... The global traveling season is now at its peak. Hordes of tourists are storming Thailand and Laos, South America and Kenya. And the battle has already been decided. The Israeli, any Israeli, has become an icon of evilness, ugliness, corruption and exploitation ... A new form of hatred towards Israelis is developing among people who don't even have a clue where the country is. An "anti-Semitism" that has nothing to do with God or Judaism ... And this image can no longer be altered. Look at them and see us: a violent horde that treats the world as yet another policing mission, a destination that needs to be conquered and subdued.

Analysis: Defense Policy Under Obama and Gates

Here are some possible implications for U.S. defense policy of President-elect Barack Obama's decision to retain Defense Secretary Robert Gates ... Both Obama and Gates are committed to sending more U.S. forces to Afghanistan to tackle rising insurgent violence. U.S. military planners are already working to identify a prospective force of more than 20,000 combat and support troops ... Obama has backed the Bush administration's program to increase the size of the U.S. military's stretched ground forces.

Socialist Republic
Patrick J. Buchanan

... The U.S. debt is 70 percent of GDP, our savings rate is near zero, and our merchandise trade deficit is still running at 5 percent to 6 percent of GDP. Unlike the 1950s, we are today dependent on foreigners for two-thirds of our oil and for much of our manufactured goods -- toys, TVs, radios, cameras, cars, shoes, clothes, bikes, motorcycles -- and for the $700 billion to $800 billion we borrow each year to pay for these imports. With U.S. homeowners, consumers, companies and banks now going bust, why must the nation borrow trillions more to bail them out? So we can maintain our status and standard of living as the last superpower.

Why So Many Holocaust Films Now, and For Whose Benefit?
International Herald-Tribune

This holiday season the multiplexes, the art houses and the glossy for-your-consideration ads in publications like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter will be overrun with Nazis ... The number of Holocaust-related memoirs, novels, documentaries and feature films in the past decade or so seems to defy quantification, and their proliferation raises some uncomfortable questions. Why are there so many? Why now? And more queasily, could there be too many? ...

Holocaust Studies Should be Mandatory in Schools, Canada Poll Finds
Canadian Jewish News

While seven per cent of Canadians say they've never heard of the Holocaust, a recent national survey also found that 75 per cent think the subject should be compulsory in school, and it suggested there's a link between Holocaust knowledge and "sensitivity" to diversity. Conducted by Leger Marketing from Oct. 8 to 10, the poll, released in Montreal on the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht, questioned 1,500 Canadian on 25 Holocaust-related issues.

Scottish Taxpayers to Fund Kids' Trips to Auschwitz
Stv (Scotland)

The Scottish government has stepped in to fund children's educational trips to Auschwitz. Students faced missing out on the study visits when direct finding was withdrawn from the Treasury. The Education Secretary has now agreed to subsidise the flights, organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust, saying it offered secondary pupils an important insight. Education secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "The Scottish Government recognises that Holocaust education offers an important and insightful dimension to the curriculum and that it is important pupils have the chance to learn about what happened in Auschwitz so that the Holocaust is never forgotten."

Holocaust Remembrance: What's Behind the Campaign?
Mark Weber

... Holocaust remembrance is not, as its supporters claim, a noble effort motivated by sincere concern for humanity. Instead, this relentless campaign is an expression of Jewish-Zionist power, and is designed to further Jewish-Zionist interests ... Jewish death and suffering do not deserve to be venerated more than the death and suffering of non-Jews. The Holocaust remembrance campaign deserves scorn, not support, because it is a one-sided effort that serves narrow Jewish and Israeli interests and bolsters Jewish-Zionist power.

Confronting the Terrorist Within
Chris Hedges -- Truthdig

... Barack Obama's decision to increase troop levels in Afghanistan and leave behind tens of thousands of soldiers and Marines in Iraq -- he promises only to withdraw combat brigades -- is a failure to rescue us from the status of a rogue nation. It codifies Bush's "war on terror." And the continuation of these wars will corrupt and degrade our nation just as the long and brutal occupation of Gaza and the West Bank has corrupted and degraded Israel. George W. Bush has handed Barack Obama a poisoned apple. Obama has bitten it.

The Truth About 'Hate Crimes' and the Racial Justice Racket
Ron Smith -- Baltimore Sun

... The Southern Poverty Law Center is a thriving business. The Alabama-based "nonprofit" firm has become a font of riches for founder Morris Dees and his associates. Its last tax return (2005) showed it took in nearly $111 million in donations the previous four years alone and reported assets of $189.4 million at the end of 2005 ... To me and to other observant conservatives, the Southern Poverty Law Center is a clever scam, relentlessly cultivating for profit the fear that this nation is filled with Klansmen and rife with people eager to perpetrate genocide.

Hitler Was a 'Great Boss,' Says His Former Maid
Daily Mail (Britain)

... For one woman, the name Adolf Hitler evokes a smile not a shudder. She is Rosa Mitterer, who worked as a maid for the Fuehrer at his mountain retreat in Bavaria in the 1930s. Rosa is 91 and until now has kept a vow of silence about her experiences ... Her verdict on her former master: 'He was a charming man, someone who was only ever nice to me, a great boss to work for. You can say what you like, but he was a good man to us.' ... 'I only ever knew Hitler as a kindly man who was good to me.'

Israel's Settlement on Capitol Hill
Robert Weitzel -- Counterpunch

... According to a recent Amnesty International report, "In the first six months of 2008 Israel has expanded settlements in the West Bank/East Jerusalem at a faster rate than in the previous seven years." ... John Holmes, UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, said that Israel's blockade of vital supplies to the Gaza Strip in retaliation for rocket attacks "amounts to collective punishment and is contrary to international humanitarian law."

Top UN Official Slams 'Apartheid' by Israel
Haaretz (Israel)

United Nations General Assembly President Miguel D'Escoto Brockmann on Monday likened Israel's policies toward the Palestinians to South Africa's treatment of blacks under apartheid. Israel's actions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip were like "the apartheid of an earlier era," said Brockmann, of Nicaragua, speaking at the annual debate marking the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. He added: "We must not be afraid to call something what it is."

Nuremberg Or The Promised Land
Maurice Bardche

Bardche's Nuremberg or the Promised Land (Nuremberg ou la Terre Promise) was the first book-length critique of the Nuremberg Trial. In English, in pdf format. 85 pages. This pioneering work was first published in Paris in 1948. For a Frenchman to criticize that trial in those years, and especially the French role in it, took great courage. For having written this book, the author was sentenced by a Paris court to one year in prison and fined 50,000 francs. (However, he served only a few weeks before being pardoned.) Copies of the book were seized and sale of the work was prohibited.

Huey Long: The 'Kingfish'
Paramount newsreel

Paramount newsreel sketch of the career and sudden death of Huey Long, the colorful, charismatic political figure who transformed Louisiana, and won followers across the country. Runtime: 3:50 mins.

Israeli Army 'Lenient On Abuse'
BBC News

Israeli soldiers have been charged in just six percent of all inquiries into suspected offences against Palestinians between 2001-2007, a human rights group says. The Yesh Din group found only 78 out of 1,246 army investigations since the start of the second Palestinian uprising had actually led to charges. Five soldiers, it says, were convicted of unlawful killings despite some 2,000 Palestinian civilian deaths.

Obama's First Problem is US War Crimes
The Sunday Times (Britain)

A small and largely unnoticed spat among the transition planners for the president-elect, Barack Obama, broke out last week. It was the first genuinely passionate debate among the Obamaites, and it centres on a terribly difficult and terribly important decision that will be among the first that Obama has to make. How does he deal with the legacy of criminal actions of his predecessor's administration when it comes to detention, interrogation, abuse and torture of terror suspects?

Dividing Jerusalem, One Wall at a Time
Bradley Burston -- Haaretz (Israel)

... It is a testament, as well, to the principle that Israel's only reliable natural resource is irony. The walled area is a construction site where a Los Angeles-based Jewish human rights organization dedicated to instilling the lessons of the Holocaust and combating hatred, is building a Museum of Tolerance and Center for Human Dignity atop an ancient Muslim cemetery. The complex is a project of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, whose founder Rabbi Marvin Hier envisions the museum as a "great landmark promoting the principles of mutual respect and social responsibility."

The Simon Wiesenthal Center: A Bastion of Jewish-Zionist Power
Mark Weber

Since its founding in 1977, the Simon Wiesenthal Center has grown to become one of the most important and influential Jewish organizations in the world ... The Wiesenthal Center has a long record of reckless propaganda for war. Long before the US invasion of Iraq in March 2003, it had been pressing for an American attack against the Middle East nation, backing its effort with alarmist "Big Lie" claims about the supposed danger posed by the Baghdad regime.

Canada University Group Drops Fundraiser Because Disease is Not 'Inclusive' Enough
Canwest News Service (Canada)

The Carleton University Students' Association has voted to drop a cystic fibrosis charity as the beneficiary of its annual Shinearama fundraiser, supporting a motion that argued the disease is not "inclusive" enough. Cystic fibrosis "has been recently revealed to only affect white people, and primarily men" said the motion read Monday night to student councillors, who voted almost unanimously in favour of it.

Mafia Jews: Inside a Genuine Cabal
Forward (New York)

The Jewish people are instructed to be a "light unto the nations" -- and what society could use more illumination than the underworld? So goes the story of mob lawyer Sidney Korshak, whose partnerships with Chicago gangsters led him to be named the most powerful lawyer in the world by the FBI ... For much of the past century, the real center of mob power was a Chicago-born Jewish lawyer -- or so says investigative reporter Gus Russo in his new book, "Supermob: How Sidney Korshak and His Criminal Associates Became America's Hidden Power Brokers."

American Teens Lie, Steal, Cheat at 'Alarming' Rates
AFP -- Breitbart

American teenagers lie, steal and cheat more at "alarming rates," a study of nearly 30,000 high school students concluded Monday. The attitudes and conduct of some 29,760 high school students across the United States "doesn't bode well for the future when these youngsters become the next generation's politicians and parents, cops and corporate executives, and journalists and generals," the non-profit Josephson Institute said.

Government Bailout Hits $8.5 Trillion
San Francisco Chronicle

The federal government committed an additional $800 billion to two new loan programs on Tuesday, bringing its cumulative commitment to financial rescue initiatives to a staggering $8.5 trillion, according to Bloomberg News. That sum represents almost 60 percent of the nation's estimated gross domestic product. Given the unprecedented size and complexity of these programs and the fact that many have never been tried before, it's impossible to predict how much they will cost taxpayers. The final cost won't be known for many years.

Record Number of Jews Slated for Next US Congress
Forward (New York)

When the new Congress debuts in January 2009, a record 45 Jews will take the oath of office: 32 in the House of Representatives and -- regardless of the outcome in the still-contested Minnesota election -- 13 Jews in the Senate. Among the three newcomers to the House are a young, gay, multimillionaire entrepreneur; a seasoned veteran of New Jersey's rough-and-tumble politics, and a wealthy attorney who poured $2 million of his own money into a raucous campaign that now gives him the right to say he represents Mickey Mouse.

UN General Assembly Adopts Six Resolutions on Middle East
Xinhua (China)

The UN General Assembly adopted on Wednesday by recorded vote six resolutions meant to promote the Palestinian people's rights and limit Israel's actions in Jerusalem and the Syrian Golan ... Each of the six resolutions was adopted by an overwhelming majority of more than 100 approval votes while eight countries, including Israel and the United States, cast negative votes.

UN General Assembly President Calls for 'Concrete Action' Against Israel
The Jerusalem Post (Israel)

A top UN official has called for "concrete action" against Israel over the country's treatment of Palestinians. General Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann said the international community should consider sanctions against Israel including "boycott, divestment and sanctions" similar to those enacted against South Africa two decades ago ... He went on to say that the Holocaust and other historical crimes against the Jews didn't give Israel "the right to abuse others, especially those who historically have such deep and exemplary relations with the Jewish people."

Avraham Burg: Israel's New Prophet
The Independent (Britain)

Avraham Burg was a pillar of the Israeli establishment but his new book is causing a sensation. It argues that his country is an "abused child" which has become a "violent parent". / ... Burg argues that Israel has been too long imprisoned by its obsessive and cheapening use -- or abuse -- of the Holocaust as "a theological pillar of Jewish identity". He argues that the living role played by the Holocaust -- Burg uses the regular Hebrew word Shoah or "catastrophe" for the extermination of six million Jews in the Second World War -- in everyday Israeli discourse, has left Israel with a persistent self-image of a "nation of victims", in stark variance with its actual present-day power.

The Corruption That Makes Unpeople Of An Entire Nation
John Pilger

... During the 1960s and 1970s British governments, Labour and Tory, tricked and expelled the entire population of the Chagos Archipelago, more than 2,000 British citizens, so that Diego Garcia could be given to the United States as the site for a military base. It was an act of mass kidnapping carried out in high secrecy. As unclassified official files now show, Foreign Office officials conspired to lie, coaching each other to "maintain" and "argue" the "fiction" that the Chagossians existed only as a "floating population".

Holocaust Denier's Freedom 'A Great Success,' Says Lady Renouf
The Australian

Holocaust denier Fredrick Toben has flown out of London a free man, leaving fellow Australian Michele Renouf celebrating her role in what she sees as a great victory for democracy and freedom of thought. After helping Dr Toben to avoid extradition to Germany on Holocaust denial charges, Lady Renouf vowed yesterday to keep working for a cause that is widely seen as a hateful and anti-Semitic twisting of history. "This is not a hobby for me -- I feel it is a responsibility," she said. "Now I know people are being imprisoned for their opinions, I can't stop trying to do something about it."

Toben Now Faces Charges in Australia
Australian Jewish News

With German authorities pausing in their bid to bring Fredrick Toben to trial on criminal charges, the focus has swung back to a two-year-old Australian contempt case against the globetrotting Holocaust denier. Prosecutors in Germany have pulled the plug on their current attempt to bring the Adelaide man to court in their country, where Holocaust denial is classified as a crime, but say they will continue to pursue him ... Last week's change of strategy by German lawyers has shifted the international spotlight to Australia, where Toben is facing a contempt hearing in the Federal Court.

What Christians Don't Know About Israel
Grace Halsell

American Jews sympathetic to Israel dominate key positions in all areas of our government where decisions are made regarding the Middle East. This being the case, is there any hope of ever changing U.S. policy? ... The answer to achieving an even-handed Middle East policy might lie elsewhere -- among those who support Israel but don't really know why. This group is the vast majority of Americans. They are well-meaning, fair-minded Christians who feel bonded to Israel - and Zionism - often from atavistic feelings, in some cases dating from childhood.

Public Distrust of Government Could Hobble Obama
McClatchy newspapers

... In a new report, the two argued Tuesday that Obama and the Democrats who will run the next Congress shouldn't confuse election results with public trust, which is at an all-time low. Just 17 percent of Americans thought in October that the government will do the right thing all or most of the time, they noted, the lowest since pollsters started asking the question in 1958 ... In 1964, Johnson and the Democrats enjoyed not only a landslide election but also the broad confidence of the people; 76 percent of Americans trusted the government to do the right thing all or most of the time. Johnson responded with civil rights legislation and Medicare.

Why No One Trusts the Government to Fix Anything
Bill Bishop - Slate

... In the late 1950s, eight out of ten Americans said they could trust government to do the right thing most of the time. That level of faith in government remained high through 1964 and provided the foundation for LBJ's Great Society. In 1965, Johnson was able to pass the Voting Rights Act and Medicare (with the support of half the Republicans in the Senate) ... Beginning in the mid-'60s, however, there was a "virtual explosion in anti-government feelings," wrote Seymour Martin Lipset and William Schneider ... The decline in trust in government has been permanent, and it has permanently changed the terms of national debate.

The Errors of Iraq Are Being Repeated in Afghanistan
Simon Jenkins -- The Guardian (Britain)

... The incompetence in every department has been so astonishing as to strip the Atlantic powers of practical and moral claim to be the world's policemen in the 21st century. That is the true measure of the Bush-Blair legacy ... The error of Afghanistan is far more serious than the error of Iraq. If the resulting insurgency is now exported to Pakistan, both errors will seem peccadillos. Pakistan is the sixth largest state in the world, and nuclear-armed. The awful prospect is that Obama and Brown may feel too weak to learn from Iraq and pull back. They will blunder on, not to a clean defeat but to something far worse, a war of attrition whose poison will spread across a subcontinent.
