February 2008 Headlines
An Invention Called `the Jewish People'
Tom Segev -- Haaretz (Israel)

... Historian Shlomo Zand, in one of the most fascinating and challenging books published here in a long time [says] ... there never was a Jewish people, only a Jewish religion, and the exile also never happened - hence there was no return. Zand rejects most of the stories of national-identity formation in the Bible, including the exodus from Egypt and, most satisfactorily, the horrors of the conquest under Joshua. It's all fiction and myth that served as an excuse for the establishment of the State of Israel, he asserts.

Debunking the Reagan Myth
Paul Krugman -- The Independent (Britain)

... The Reagan economy was a one-hit wonder. Yes, there was a boom in the mid-1980s, as the economy recovered from a severe recession. But while the rich got much richer, there was little sustained economic improvement for most Americans. By the late 1980s, middle-class incomes were barely higher than they had been a decade before -- and the poverty rate had actually risen.

The Rule of Law is Not Charity
Charley Reese

President Bush is correct to refer to the proposed military trials of the six alleged terrorists as similar to the Nuremberg trials of several Nazis. In both cases, the law is made a farce. In the case of the Nazis, if the Allies wanted vengeance, and they did, they should have rounded up the Nazi leadership and shot them. That, at least, would have been an honest act of vengeance. Instead, they set up a propaganda farce at Nuremberg and pretended they were going to provide a fair trial to the defendants.

The Nuremberg Trials and the Holocaust
Mark Weber

... The Nuremberg enterprise violated ancient and fundamental principles of justice. The victorious Allies acted as prosecutor, judge and executioner of the German leaders. The charges were created especially for the occasion, and were applied only to the vanquished. Defeated, starving, prostrate Germany was, however, in no position to oppose whatever the Allied occupation powers demanded. As even some leading Allied figures privately acknowledged at the time, the Nuremberg trials were organized not to dispense impartial justice, but for political purposes.

Americans Switching Faiths, Dropping Out
Associated Press

The U.S. religious marketplace is extremely volatile, with nearly half of American adults leaving the faith tradition of their upbringing to either switch allegiances or abandon religious affiliation altogether, a new survey finds ... The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey estimates the United States is 78 percent Christian and about to lose its status as a majority Protestant nation, at 51 percent and slipping. More than one-quarter of American adults have left the faith of their childhood for another religion or no religion at all, the survey found. Factoring in moves from one stream or denomination of Protestantism to another, the number rises to 44 percent.

Jews are Wealthiest Religious Group in USA
The Jerusalem Post (Israel)

Jews are the highest-earning religious group in the United States, with 46 percent of the working population earning a six-digit figure every year, according to a study ... In terms of annual earnings, the only other group to even come close to the average Jewish income was the Hindus, with 43 percent earning over $100,000. No other group reached even the 30 percent mark, and the overall US average was only 18 percent earning six-figure digits annually.

The Chief Culprit: Stalin's Grand Design to Start World War II

Using new documents and reevaluating existing material, [author Viktor Suvorov, in his 2007 book] The Chief Culprit analyzes Joseph Stalins strategic design to conquer Europe ... Stalin emerges as a diabolical genius consumed by visions of a worldwide Communist revolution at any cost, the leader who wooed Hitler and Germany in his own effort to conquer the world. The author debunks the myth that the Soviet Union was a victim of Germanys aggression ... Suvorov argues that ... Hitlers intelligence services detected the Soviet Unions preparations for a major war against Germany.

Congo Postcard: Come Back, Colonialism, All Is Forgiven
Time magazine

Le Blanc and I are into our 500th kilometer on the river [in Congo] when he turns my view of modern African history on its head. "We should just give it all back to the whites," the riverboat captain says. "Even if you go 1,000 kilometers down this river, you won't see a single sign of development. When the whites left, we didn't just stay where we were. We went backwards." ... Around 45,000 people die each month in the DRC [Congo] as a result of the social collapse brought on by civil war ... The total loss of life between 1998 and April 2007 at 5.4 million.

Israel Protests Lithuanian Investigation of Holocaust Historian
Associated Press

Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial handed a harsh letter of protest to visiting Lithuanian Foreign Minister Petras Vaitiekunas, denouncing an investigation of a renowned Holocaust historian and World War II resistance fighter. Last year, Lithuania opened a criminal investigation against Yitzhak Arad, a former director of Yad Vashem, who survived the Holocaust in Lithuania and fought with local resistance fighters against the Nazis.

French Court Upholds Conviction of Holocaust `Denier
Press TV (Iran)

The Lyons Appeal Court has confirmed conviction of a member of the European Parliament, Bruno Gollnisch, for questioning the Holocaust. Gollnisch, a former law professor of Lyons University and a member of the European Parliament has been sentenced to five months suspended jail term and a cash fine of 5,000 euros. Gollnisch has questioned the gas-chambers run by Nazi Germany, where thousands of Jews were allegedly murdered.

The Dumbing of America
Susan Jacoby -- The Washington Post

... Americans are in serious intellectual trouble -- in danger of losing our hard-won cultural capital to a virulent mixture of anti-intellectualism, anti-rationalism and low expectations ... Our era of 24/7 infotainment has outstripped his most apocalyptic predictions about the future of American culture ... More than 40 percent of Americans under 44 did not read a single book -- fiction or nonfiction -- over the course of a year. The proportion of 17-year-olds who read nothing (unless required to do so for school) more than doubled between 1984 and 2004.

Leader and Vassal
Paul Craig Roberts

... The US is at war in Iraq, because the neoconservatives want to rid Israel of the Muslim governments " Iraq, Iran and Syria " that are not American surrogates and, therefore, are willing to fund Palestinian and Lebanese resistance to Israeli aggression. Israel, protected by the US, has disobeyed UN resolutions for four decades and has been methodically squeezing Palestinians out of Palestine. Americans do not think of themselves or of Israel as terrorist states, but the evidence is complete and overwhelming. Thanks to the power of the Israel Lobby, Americans only know the Israeli side of the story...

Illegal Immigration: If We Subsidize Them...
Rep. Ron Paul

... One thing is certain: If we subsidize them, they will come. We have rolled out the social services red carpet, so it is no surprise that many from other countries are eager to come take advantage of our very generous system ... We should not be awarding automatic citizenship to children born here minutes after their mothers illegally cross the border. It just doesn't make sense. The practice of birthright citizenship is an aberration of the original intent of the 14th amendment, the purpose of which was never to allow lawbreakers to bleed taxpayers of welfare benefits.

The Dark Side of the 'Good War'
Michael Bess -- Los Angeles Times

World War II is widely considered one of the most morally unambiguous military conflicts in history ... the quintessential "Good War," as journalist Studs Terkel once described it... At the same time, 60 years of research and reflection have gradually brought to light numerous aspects of this conflict that do not fit a straightforward pattern of black-and- white moral clarity... Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo ... entire cities, tens of thousands of noncombatant civilians at a time, incinerated or blasted to bits under a steady torrent of British and American bombs. The large-scale killing of children, women and old people had now become routine facets of Allied warfare.

The `Good War It Wasnt
James J. Martin,

Of the approximately half-million titles issued by mainline American publishers in the 1980s, Wartime by Professor Paul Fussell is one of a small selection which a revisionist might profit from reading ... It used to be a conviction generations ago that the only certainty upon the outbreak of war was that one side would not win. Modern wars are mainly lost by both sides, though it takes awhile for this to be realized. In first shock of apparent "victory," however, the "winners" are posed no questions nor ever expected to answer any ... All times are disorderly. The notion that human affairs move in the direction of something called "normalcy" is a hallucination.

Record-High Ratio of Americans in Prison
Associated Press

For the first time in U.S. history, more than one of every 100 adults is in jail or prison, according to a new report documenting America's rank as the world's No. 1 incarcerator. It urges states to curtail corrections spending by placing fewer low-risk offenders behind bars. Using state-by-state data, the report says 2,319,258 Americans were in jail or prison at the start of 2008 ... One out of every 99.1 adults. Whether per capita or in raw numbers, it's more than any other nation.

Best-Selling Holocaust Book is a Hoax, Author Admits
Associated Press

A Belgian writer has admitted that she made up her best-selling "memoir" depicting how, as a Jewish child, she lived with a pack of wolves in the woods during the Holocaust, her lawyers said Friday. Misha Defonseca's book, "Misha: A Memoire of the Holocaust Years," has been translated into 18 languages and made into a feature film in France.

War Costs To Exceed $3 Trillion, Says Economist
McClatchy newspapers

When U.S. troops invaded Iraq in March 2003, the Bush administration predicted that the war would be self-financing, and rebuilding the nation would cost less than $2 billion. Coming up on the five-year anniversary of the invasion, a new estimate from a Nobel laureate puts the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan at more than $3 trillion. That estimate from Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz also serves as the title of his new book, "The Three Trillion Dollar War," which will hit store shelves Friday.

Latvia Bans Waffen SS Veterans March
RIA Novosti (Russia)

Latvian authorities have banned a street march planned by a nationalist organization for March 16 to commemorate Latvians who fought for Nazi forces in World War II, Riga parliament said on Tuesday. The National Power Unity (NPU) applied to the city parliament in the capital, Riga, for permission to hold a street march honoring former Latvian members of the Waffen SS on Monday but was refused on the grounds that it was not a registered political party.

Are We Beasts?: Britains Air War Against Germany
Richard Overy

... Did the British military machine set out deliberately in the Second World War on a path to the genocide of the German people? This issue lies at the heart of Jrg Friedrich's searing account of the bombing of around 150 German cities between 1940 and 1945 ... Killing as many German civilians as possible in ways that became progressively more grotesque was Britain's strategy from 1940 to the last attacks in April 1945. This is a point of view that will probably not go down well with the British public, and this is all to the good.

Israeli Minister Vows Palestinian `Holocaust'
The Telegraph (Britain)

A senior Israeli politician has provoked controversy by warning that Palestinians firing rockets from Gaza would be punished with a "bigger holocaust" from Israeli armed forces. The use of the Hebrew word for holocaust, "shoah", tends to be used exclusively in Israel to describe the Nazi persecution of Jews. Palestinian activists routinely claim to be suffering a "shoah" at the hands of Israel, but the Jewish state normally denies any moral equivalence between the suffering of Palestinians today and European jewry under the Nazis.

The `Problem of Evil in Postwar Europe
Tony Judt - The New York Review of Books

... Today, the Shoah is a universal reference. The history of the Final Solution, or Nazism, or World War II is a required course in high school curriculums everywhere ... But I have been struck lately by the frequency with which new questions are surfacing: "Why do we focus so on the Holocaust?" "Why is it illegal [in certain countries] to deny the Holocaust but not other genocides?" "Is the threat of anti-Semitism not exaggerated?" And, increasingly, "Doesn't Israel use the Holocaust as an excuse?" I do not recall hearing those questions in the past.

Americans Rank Lincoln as Top President

Far and away, Abraham Lincoln is ranked by Americans as the nation's greatest president, according to a poll conducted by Harris Interactive and released this week, just ahead of Presidents Day. What's surprising is that President George W. Bush, whose approval rating has plunged to just 30 percent, also sneaks into the top ten list. The Harris poll points out that recent presidents tend to be listed more often as both the best and the worst. In a separate poll asking Americans to name the worst commander-in-chief since World War II, Bush won in a landslide, netting 34 percent of the vote.

Hungarian Jews Called to Register for Holocaust Lawsuit
Budapest Sun (Hungary)

Peter Wolz, who describes himself as an attorney for Jewish survivors of Auschwitz and their heirs, is appealing for Hungarian victims of the death camps and their heirs to contact him over a possible class action [lawsuit]. Dsseldorf-based Wolz says he has already filed a class action for $40 billion against the US government at the Federal District court of Colombia, in Washington DC. The class action [lawsuit] concerns the failure of the Allies to bomb the railway bridges between Hungary and Auschwitz during the Second World War.

Russia Has `Confidently Come Back, Says Putin
Vladimir Putin

... We have rid the country of the harmful practice that saw state decisions taken under pressure from commodities and financial monopolies, media magnates, foreign political circles and shameless populists ... Finally, Russia has returned to the world stage as a strong state, a country that others heed and that can stand up for itself ... Over these last years, we have confidently come back, we have worked to restore the country after the chaos, economic ruin and breakdown of the old system that we saw in the 1990s.

Jews Who Survived in Wartime Berlin
The Washington Post

Klaus Zwilsky, 74, of Calvert County, Md., is a Holocaust survivor. However, his story is relatively unique among Jews who emerged from the horrors of Nazi Germany. He was not sent to a concentration camp, nor did he spend World War II hiding in the home of a sympathtic non-Jew. Instead, Zwilsky survived in a Jewish hospital in Berlin, with the knowledge, and consent, of the Nazi government ... Because Zwilsky's father was a pharmacist, they were allowed to live at the hospital in relatively good conditions. They received running water, heat and electricity at the benefit of soldiers undergoing treatment.

French Government Softens Sarkozys Holocaust Education Plan
Associated Press

France's education minister on Monday softened a proposal by President Nicolas Sarkozy to make French ten-year-olds honor child Holocaust victims, amid heated criticism of the sensitive idea. Sarkozy said last week that each French pupil in the last year of primary school should adopt one of the 11,000 Jewish children from France killed in the Holocaust, learning about the selected child's background and fate ... Education Minister Xavier Darcos said Monday the plan could be adjusted so that an entire class could collectively honor an individual victim.

Americas Heroes
Harris Interactive

When a nationwide cross section of [American] adults was asked to name people they thought of as heroes, without reviewing a list or having any names suggested to them, the person mentioned most often was Jesus Christ. He is followed by Martin Luther King, Colin Powell, John F. Kennedy and Mother Teresa, in that order ... Places six to ten in this pantheon of heroes are Ronald Reagan (#6), Abraham Lincoln (#7), John Wayne (#8), Michael Jordan (#9), and Bill Clinton (#10).

Strange Story of a Half-Jewish `Nazi Cowboy
Forward (New York)

The photograph is bizarre and disturbing: A broadly grinning middle-aged man, dressed in full cowboy regalia, strides across a stage. In one hand, he brandishes a wide-brimmed cowboy hat; in the other, he holds aloft a big Nazi swastika topped by an eagle spreading its wings. The man in the picture was known as Billy Jenkins. Born in 1885, he was a German stage performer who, dubbed "Der Koenig der Cowboys" ... "The King of the Cowboys" ... The image, and signature, becomes more disturbing than bizarre when you learn that Jenkins was born Erich Rudolf Otto Rosenthal and that his father was a Jew ...

American Companies are Falling Behind in Technology
Financial Times (Britain)

There has been a lot of talk about technology companies facing a squeeze. But a more worrying international trend has emerged. US companies, once viewed as early adopters in corporate computing and the internet, are now falling behind global competitors in driving productivity and earnings growth because of technology shortfalls. The reason behind this surprising shift is that US companies dedicate the majority of their fresh capital to fortifying older systems while companies in Europe and Asia invest in more up-to-date systems.

Mixed-Race Babies in Wartime Britain Were Sent to the US
Telegraph (Britain)

Thousands of illegitimate mixed-race children fathered by American GIs were given up by their British mothers and shipped across the Atlantic, according to newly released papers. The issue of how to deal with the unwanted offspring of the illicit affairs divided the country towards the end of the Second World War and exposed the racial prejudices of the time. It was considered so serious that there were dire warnings it could harm Anglo-American relations and the government was urged to treat the children as "war casualties". The problem began to emerge in 1944, when increasing numbers of US servicemen were stationed around Britain.

Racist Views More Widespread in Israel
Haaretz (Israel)

Racism against Israel's Arab citizens has dramatically increased in the past year, including a 26 percent rise in anti-Arab incidents, according to the Association for Civil Rights in Israel's annual report. Author Sami Michael, the association's president, said upon the release of the report that racism was so rife it was damaging civil liberty in Israel. "Israeli society is reaching new heights of racism that damages freedom of expression and privacy," Michael said... The number of Jews expressing feelings of hatred toward Arabs has doubled, the report stated.

Prof. MacDonalds `The Culture of Critique
Stanley Hornbeck - American Renaissance

In The Culture of Critique, Kevin MacDonald advances a carefully researched but extremely controversial thesis: that certain 20th century intellectual movements ... largely established and led by Jews ... have changed European societies in fundamental ways and destroyed the confidence of Western man. He claims that these movements were designed, consciously or unconsciously, to advance Jewish interests even though they were presented to non-Jews as universalistic and even utopian. He concludes that the increasing dominance of these ideas has had profound political and social consequences that benefited Jews but caused great harm to gentile societies.

The Real Scandal: How Feds Invited the Mortgage Mess
Stan Liebowitz - New York Post

Perhaps the greatest scandal of the mortgage crisis is that it is a direct result of an intentional loosening of underwriting standards - done in the name of ending discrimination, despite warnings that it could lead to wide-scale defaults ... In the 1980s, groups such as the activists at ACORN began pushing charges of "redlining" - claims that banks discriminated against minorities in mortgage lending ... In fact, minority mortgage applications were rejected more frequently than other applications - but the overwhelming reason wasn't racial discrimination, but simply that minorities tend to have weaker finances.

War Without End
Paul Craig Roberts

... Nothing good whatsoever has been accomplished by Bush's invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. It was obvious to anyone with a lick of sense in 2002, six months prior to Bush's invasion of Iraq on March 18, 2003, that an invasion would be a strategic blunder. William S. Lind, myself, and others made that prediction in October 2002 ... The neocons who dominated the Bush regime and took America to illegal wars are allied with the extreme right-wing government of Israel ... What total traitors the neoconservatives are. Every last one of them should be immediately arrested for high treason. Neonconservatives are America's greatest enemies, and they control our government!

German Schools `Holocaust Education Less Effective
Haaretz (Israel)

German schools are failing in educating students about the Holocaust, a new study by a political education center has found, as German youth, who one historian said use the word "Jew" as a common curse in daily discourse, are increasingly distant from the suffering of the victims of Nazism...

Germany Launches Comic Book on Holocaust for Schools

German schools will launch a comic book next week that aims to teach above all underprivileged children about the Nazi era and the Holocaust. Although German schools already make a big effort to give pupils a thorough education about the Nazi era, racist violence remains a problem, and the revival of Germany's Jewish community has brought a rise in anti-Semitism with it. The Tintin-style comic book is called "The Search," and tells the story of Esther, a fictional Jewish survivor of the Holocaust.

New German Dictionary Highlights Taboo `Nazi Words
Spiegel Online (Germany)

Dozens of words in the German language, from "degenerate" to "final solution," have become taboo because of their use by the Nazis. A new dictionary of Third Reich terms provides a guide through the linguistic minefield ... Now a new dictionary examines just what roles such terms play in the collective German psyche. The "Wrterbuch der 'Vergangenheitsbewltigung'" ("Dictionary of 'Coming to Terms with the Past'") examines around 1,000 words and phrases ... Another reason for avoiding Nazi terms in public discourse is the fact that the speaker runs the risk of being accused of harboring Nazi sympathies.

The Real Reason for Huge US Military Budget: China
Gwynne Dyer

Recently the Pentagon asked Congress for the biggest defense budget since the Second World ... So what is all the rest of the money for? According to Michael Klare, defense correspondent for The Nation, the answer is obvious. "The US military posits its future on the China threat. That is the ultimate justification for a defense budget of US$500 billion a year. There is no other plausible threat ... So what is the alleged competition about? Energy, of course, and mostly oil.

The Fire: The Bombing of Germany, 1940-1945
Columbia University Press

For five years during the Second World War, the Allies launched a trial and error bombing campaign against Germany's historical city landscape. Peaking in the war's final three months, it was the first air attack of its kind. Civilian dwellings were struck by -- in today's terms -- "weapons of mass destruction," with a total of 600,000 casualties, including 70,000 children. In The Fire, historian Jrg Friedrich explores this crucial chapter in military and world history. Combining meticulous research with striking illustrations, Friedrich presents a vivid account of the saturation bombing, rendering in acute detail the annihilation of cities such as Dresden, the jewel of Germany's rich art and architectural heritage.

Unthinking Conservatives
Patrick J. Buchanan

... For too long conservatives have suppressed their convictions or meekly submitted, so as not to oppose a Republican President or get out of step with the Congressional leadership ... Thinking is hard work, said Twain; that is why so few engage in it. For too long, conservatives have not been thinking, but living on the inherited intellectual capital of the past. They have failed to see that the world has changed since Reagans time and we must change with it. The truth is the prospective Republican nominee is frozen in the past. Though an invasion of his nation is taking place on the border of his own state, John McCain is still reciting Emma Lazarus on the Golden Door.

Behind Obama and Clinton
Stephen Zunes

... As a result, it may be significant that Senator Clintons foreign policy advisors, many of whom are veterans of her husbands administration, were virtually all strong supporters of President George W. Bushs call for a U.S. invasion of Iraq. By contrast, almost every one of Senator Obamas foreign policy team was opposed to a U.S. invasion. During the lead-up to the war, Obamas advisors were suspicious of the Bush administrations claims that Iraq somehow threatened U.S. national security to the extent that it required a U.S. invasion and occupation of that country.

Anti-Muslim and Anti-Jewish Sentiment Growing in Holland
Agence France-Presse

Islamophobia is gaining ground in the Netherlands, with Muslim minorities facing rising violence and discrimination, a pan-European anti-racism commission said in a report released Tuesday. The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) found Islamophobia in the country to have "increased dramatically" since 2000 ... The report also said anti-Semitic insults and Holocaust denial are growing more widespread. "As an illustration, the word 'Jew' is reported to be increasingly used as an insult, and different aspects of the Holocaust are reportedly questioned in everyday situations, such as in schools."

Apocalypse at Dresden
R. H. S. Crossman -- Esquire magazine

The long suppressed story of the worst massacre in the history of the world [the Feb. 1945 destruction of Dresden] / If the British Commonwealth and the United States last a thousand years, men may say that this was their darkest hour. Were all the crimes against humanity committed during World War II the work of Hitler's underlings? That was certainly the impression created by the fact that only Germans were brought to trial at Nuremburg ... What is less widely recognized -- because the truth, until only recently, has been deliberately suppressed -- is that the Western democracies were responsible for the most senseless single act of mass murder committed in the whole course of World War II.

Whites To Be Minority in US by 2050

Immigration will drive the population of the United States sharply upward between now and 2050, and will push whites into a minority, projections by the Pew Research Center showed Monday ... More than 80 percent of the increase will be due to immigrants arriving in the country and their US-born children, who will make up nearly one in five Americans by 2050 compared with one in eight in 2005, it said. Whites, who currently make up around two-thirds of the US population, will become a minority (47 percent) by 2050, the report said.

An End Foreseen: The Arc of Insurgencies
Uri Avnery (Israel)

... I don't recommend books as a rule, not even my own. But this time I feel the need to make an exception. This is William Polk's book, "Violent Politics", which has recently appeared in the United States ... The main lesson is this: from the time the general public embraces the rebels, the victory of the rebellion is assured. That is an iron rule: an insurgency supported by the public is bound to win, irrespective of the tactics adopted by the occupation regime ... All along the 40 years of occupation, our political and military leaders have failed in the struggle against the Palestinian guerrilla war.

In Denial About Katyn: Russia Revives a Vicious Lie
The Economist (Britain)

... Vladimir Putin has already come dangerously close to this in Russia. He has claimed that the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was legal. He sees no need to apologise to Baltic victims of Stalinism. But the Russian media is going further. In the past six months no fewer than four different outlets have revived the outrageous falsehood that it was the Nazis, not the Soviets, who murdered 20,000 captured Polish officers at Katyn in 1940. That Stalin-era lie, enforced at gun-point in post-war Poland, viciously aggravated the original crime. It was buried in 1990, with solemn Kremlin support.

No End to Germanys Holocaust Focus
The New York Times

Most countries celebrate the best in their past. Germany unrelentingly promotes its worst. The enormous Holocaust memorial that dominates a chunk of central Berlin was completed only after years of debate. But the building of monuments to the Nazi disgrace continues unabated ... Where in the world has one ever seen a nation that erects memorials to immortalize its own shame?" said Avi Primor, the former Israeli ambassador to Germany, at an event commemorating the Holocaust and the liberation of Auschwitz on Friday in Erfurt. "Only the Germans had the bravery and the humility."

Frances Le Pen Sentenced for World War II Remarks

French far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen was handed a three-month suspended jail sentence on Friday for describing the Nazi occupation of France as "not especially inhumane". Le Pen, 79, was found guilty of denying a crime against humanity and complicity in condoning war crimes, over the remarks made in an interview with a far-right magazine in 2005. The veteran National Front (FN) chief was also fined 10,000 euros (14,500 dollars) for his remarks ... Rivarol journalist Jerome Bourbon and the magazine's editor Marie-Luce Wacquez were also respectively fined 2,000 and 5,000 euros.

Bush and Congress Hit New Low in Poll
Associated Press

It's almost as if people can barely stand the thought of President Bush and Congress anymore. Bush reached his lowest approval rating in The Associated Press-Ipsos poll ... as only 30 percent said they like the job he is doing, including an all-time low in his support by Republicans. Congress' approval fell to just 22 percent, equaling its poorest grade in the survey. Both marks dropped by four percentage points since early January.

Downsizing Our Dominance
Fred Kaplan - Los Angeles Times

... No ambitious politician is willing to mention the discomfiting reality about America's place in the world -- that we are weaker today than we were a decade or two ago, and that we need a new foreign policy that acknowledges and builds on that fact ... It's no longer morning in America, but it's not quite twilight either. The next president's big challenge will be to revive America's influence and stature while facing up to the limits of its power in a newly fractured world. And one of the bigger political challenges of that task will be to acknowledge, openly, that our power does have limits.

In Denial About Katyn: Russia Revives a Vicious Lie
The Economist (Britain)

Myths of Martin Luther King
Marcus Epstein

There is probably no greater sacred cow in America than Martin Luther King Jr. The slightest criticism of him or even suggesting that he isnt deserving of a national holiday leads to the usual accusations of racist, fascism, and the rest of the usual left-wing epithets not only from liberals, but also from many ostensible conservatives and libertarians ... King started plagiarizing as an undergraduate. When Boston University founded a commission to look into it, they found that that 45 percent of the first part and 21 percent of the second part of his dissertation was stolen, but they insisted that "no thought should be given to revocation of Dr. Kings doctoral degree."

Illiberal Capitalism: Russia and China Chart Their Own Course
Gideon Rachman -- The Financial Times (Britain)

... Yet 19 years after the "end of history", Russia and China are not falling into line with the confident predictions of the liberal, democratic determinists. On the contrary, their political elites are pursuing an alternative to the prevailing western model. The new Russo-Chinese model is authoritarian rather than democratic. It attempts to marry capitalism with a large state role in the economy. It holds out the promise of western consumerism for a rising middle class, while rejecting western political liberalism. American rhetoric about human rights and democracy is dismissed as naive - or a deliberate effort to sow chaos ...

University Dept. to Issue Statement on Prof. MacDonalds Writings
Daily 49er - California State Univ. - Long Beach

The Cal State Long Beach Psychology Department has recently initiated new plans to disassociate itself from controversial psychology professor Kevin MacDonald. The department is currently considering publishing a statement to confirm its disassociation from MacDonald, with his research and writings on Judaism continuing to garner controversy and be used by publications considered to publicize neo-Nazi and white supremacist ideology.
