Minorities Set to be US Majority by 2042
BBC News

White people of European descent will no longer make up a majority of the US population by the year 2042 - eight years sooner than previous estimates. The big change is among Hispanics and Asians, whose numbers are expected to double by the middle of the century to form 30 percent and 9 percent of the population. It is projected that black people will account for 15 percent, a small increase.

Democracy: A Flickering Star?
Patrick J. Buchanan

In his 1937 "Great Contemporaries," Winston Churchill wrote, "Whatever else may be thought about (Hitler’s) exploits, they are among the most remarkable in the whole history of the world." Churchill was referring not only to Hitler’s political triumphs - the return of the Saar and reoccupation of the Rhineland - but his economic achievements. By his fourth year in power, Hitler had pulled Germany out of the Depression, cut unemployment from 6 million to 1 million, grown the GNP 37 percent, and increased auto production from 45,000 vehicles a year to 250,000. City and provincial deficits had vanished. In material terms, Nazi Germany was a startling success.

Georgia War a Neocon Election Ploy?
Robert Scheer

... What is at work here is a neoconservative, self-fulfilling prophecy in which Russia is turned into an enemy that expands its largely reduced military, and Putin is cast as the new Josef Stalin bogeyman, evoking images of the old Soviet Union. McCain has condemned a "revanchist Russia" that should once again be contained. Although Putin has been the enormously popular elected leader of post-Communist Russia, it is assumed that imperialism is always lurking, not only in his DNA but in that of the Russian people.

A Path to Peace in the Caucasus
Mikhail Gorbachev

... The roots of this tragedy lie in the decision of Georgia's separatist leaders in 1991 to abolish South Ossetian autonomy. This turned out to be a time bomb for Georgia's territorial integrity. Each time successive Georgian leaders tried to impose their will by force -- both in South Ossetia and in Abkhazia, where the issues of autonomy are similar -- it only made the situation worse. New wounds aggravated old injuries ... The Georgian military attacked the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali with multiple rocket launchers designed to devastate large areas. Russia had to respond. To accuse it of aggression against "small, defenseless Georgia" is not just hypocritical but shows a lack of humanity.

China To Overtake US As Largest Manufacturer
The Financial Times (Britain)

China is set to overtake the US next year as the world’s largest producer of manufactured goods, four years earlier than expected, as a result of the rapidly weakening US economy. The great leap is revealed in forecasts for the Financial Times by Global Insight, a US economics consultancy. According to the estimates, next year China will account for 17 percent of manufacturing value-added output of $11,783 billion and the US will make 16 percent.

US Turns Down Israeli Plan for Attack on Iran
Haaretz (Israel)

The American administration has rejected an Israeli request for military equipment and support that would improve Israel's ability to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. A report published last week by the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) states that military strikes are unlikely to destroy Iran’s centrifuge program for enriching uranium. The Americans viewed the request, which was transmitted (and rejected) at the highest level, as a sign that Israel is in the advanced stages of preparations to attack Iran. They therefore warned Israel against attacking, saying such a strike would undermine American interests.

Polish Investigators Tie Partisans to Massacre
Forward (New York)

As Paramount Pictures gears up its ad campaign for a new movie about a band of Jewish partisans who fought the Nazis, some in Poland are suggesting that the partisans in question may also have been murderers. In anticipation of the December release of "Defiance," - starring Daniel Craig, the actor best-known as the latest incarnation of James Bond - the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza ran an article headlined, "A Hollywood Movie About Heroes or Murderers?"

Book Says White House Ordered Forgery
Mike Allen - Politico

A new book by the author Ron Suskind claims that the White House ordered the CIA to forge a back-dated, handwritten letter from the head of Iraqi intelligence to Saddam Hussein. Suskind writes in "The Way of the World," to be published Tuesday, that the alleged forgery - adamantly denied by the White House - was designed to portray a false link between Hussein’s regime and al Qaeda as a justification for the Iraq war. The author also claims that the Bush administration had information from a top Iraqi intelligence official "that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq - intelligence they received in plenty of time to stop an invasion."

Early Lessons From South Ossetia Conflict
Paul Reynolds - BBC News

Although the fighting over South Ossetia is not over, and fighting for another Georgian enclave, Abkhazia, looks like developing, it is perhaps not too early to learn some tentative lessons from the crisis. 1. Do not punch a bear on the nose unless it is tied down...

War in Georgia: The Israeli Connection
Ynet News (Israel)

For past seven years, Israeli companies have been helping Gerogian army to preparer for war against Russia through arms deals, training of infantry units and security advice / The fighting which broke out over the weekend between Russia and Georgia has brought Israel's intensive involvement in the region into the limelight. This involvement includes the sale of advanced weapons to Georgia and the training of the Georgian army's infantry forces. The Defense Ministry held a special meeting Sunday to discuss the various arms deals held by Israelis in Georgia, but no change in policy has been announced as of yet.

Georgian Minister Thanks Israel
Haaretz (Israel)

Georgian Minister Temur Yakobashvili yesterday praised Israel for its role in training Georgian troops and said Israel should be proud of its military might. "Israel should be proud of its military, which trained Georgian soldiers," Yakobashvili, who is Jewish, told Army Radio in Hebrew. He was referring to a private Israeli group Georgia had hired. Yakobashvili, Georgia's minister of reintegration, said this training enabled Georgia to defend itself against Russian forces in the warfare that erupted last week in the separatist region of South Ossetia, Georgia.

Ancient Computer Tracked Olympics
Los Angeles Times

A 2,100-year-old bronze-and-iron astronomical computer that predicted eclipses and other astronomical events also showed the cycle of the Greek Olympics and the related games that led up to it, researchers will report today. The research team has also been able to decipher all the month names from the heavily corroded fragments of the so-called Antikythera mechanism, providing the first concrete evidence that an astronomical scheme devised by the Greek astronomer Geminos was put to practical use.

Neocon Flap Highlights Jewish Divide
Daniel Luban and Jim Lobe - Inter Press Service

A mushrooming media controversy pitting neoconservatives against a prominent Jewish-American political commentator could mark a new stage in the growing battle over who speaks for the US Jewish community on foreign policy issues, particularly regarding the Middle East. Time columnist Joe Klein's accusations that Jewish neoconservatives, who played a particularly visible role in the drive to war in Iraq and have since pushed for military confrontation in Iran, sacrificed "US lives and money...to make the world safe for Israel," have spurred angry charges of anti-Semitism...

The War With Iran is On
Scott Ritter

The war between the United States and Iran is on. American taxpayer dollars are being used, with the permission of Congress, to fund activities which result in Iranians being killed and wounded, and Iranian property destroyed. This wanton violation of a nation’s sovereignty would not be tolerated if the tables were turned and Americans were being subjected to Iranian-funded covert actions which took the lives of Americans, on American soil, and destroyed American property and livelihood. Many Americans remain unaware of what is transpiring abroad in their name.

Record Federal Budget Deficit Projected for 2009
The Associated Press

The next president will inherit a record US budget deficit of $482 billion, according to a new Bush administration estimate released Monday. The administration said the deficit was being driven to an all-time high by the sagging economy and the stimulus payments being made to 130 million households in an effort to keep the country from falling into a deep recession. But the numbers could go even higher if the economy performs worse than the White House predicts. The budget office predicts the economy will grow at a rate of 1.6 percent this year and will rebound to a 2.2 percent growth rate next year.

If Iran is Attacking It Might Really Be Israel
Philip Giraldi - The American Conservative

The Benny Morris op-ed in The New York Times [July 18] should provide convincing evidence that Israel really really really wants an attack against Iran sooner rather than later. Morris is close to the Israeli government, and his case that Iran must be bombed soon and with maximum conventional weaponry to avoid using nukes later was clearly intended to push the United States to do the attacking. The likelihood that Dick Cheney is almost certainly supportive of a US pre-emptive strike and might well be pulling strings behind the scenes, possibly without the knowledge of the Great Decider, makes the next several months particularly significant if a war is to be avoided.

US Politicians Are Obliged to Agree With Israel, Says Carter

Because of "political pressures," says former US President Jimmy Carter, any American political candidate running for higher office "cannot possibly approve doing anything" by him "with which the government of Israel disagrees." Carter thus confirms that only pro-Israel politicians can get elected in the US. Interview excerpt. Video runtime: 34 seconds

JFK Was Enraged at 'Zionist Control' in Politics
Philip Weiss

During the 1960 presidential election campaign, John F. Kennedy was "outraged" by the Jewish-Zionist role in American politics. This is reported by investigative reporter Seymour M. Hersh, in his 1991 book, The Samson Option: Israel’s Nuclear Arsenal and American Foreign Policy. "As an American citizen he was outraged," Bartlett recalled, 'to have a Zionist group come to him and say: "We know your campaign is in trouble. We're willing to pay your bills if you'll let us have control of your Middle East policy’." Kennedy also "resented the crudity with which he'd been approached. 'They wanted control,’ he angrily told Bartlett."

In Enemy Territory: `No Go Zones’ in German Cities
Die Welt (Germany)

... In the northern downtown of Essen trouble and crime are the agenda of the day. Robbery in parks, drug trafficking, fencing of goods, fights, black-market workers. "It is unbelievable that such a lawless place has evolved" said the Essen chief police inspector, Ditmar Jensen, in April 2007. That’s why the area was designated a "danger zone" by the Nordrhein-Westphal police. Since then, the police have authorized harsher control.

In Australia, `Revisionist’ Toben Clashes with Court Over Postings
The Advertiser (Australia)

Holocaust "revisionist" Fredrick Toben should be jailed for criminal contempt of court if he can't afford a fine, the Federal Court has been told. Dr Toben faces a contempt finding in the Federal Court in Adelaide, accused of failing to stop publishing racist material on his Adelaide Institute website - despite a 2002 Federal Court order and an undertaking he made last year. He pleaded not guilty to 28 charges this week, after allegations from former president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Jeremy Jones, that Dr Toben was still breaching the Racial Discrimination Act on his website.

Not a Dime’s Worth of Difference on Foreign Policy
Jacob G. Hornberger

An op-ed in the conservative Wall Street Journal provides another example of how there isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between Republicans and Democrats, especially when it comes to foreign policy. The op-ed, entitled "Don’t Expect a Big Change in U.S. Foreign Policy" by Timothy J. Lynch and Robert S. Singh, argues that no matter who is elected president - McCain, Obama, or Clinton - foreign interventionism will continue to be the order of the day. We all know where John McCain and Hillary Clinton stand, especially with respect to the war of aggression against Iraq, a type of war that was punished as a war crime at Nuremberg.

A Brazen Evil
Justin Raimondo

Evil usually hides its face, because the sight of it repulses all but the depraved. However, in the case of Benny Morris, writing in The New York Times, we see something new: a proud evil, glorying in pure malevolence. His piece is a cold, calculated attempt to simultaneously shock and intimidate, one that succeeds at the former but fails miserably at the latter. Here's the shocker, really a double jolt: "Israel," he avers, "will almost surely attack Iran's nuclear sites in the next four to seven months." Either that, he writes, or else Israel will eventually have to launch "a preemptive nuclear strike." His message to the West: take out Iran, or we'll nuke 'em!

Solzhenitsyn's Critical View of the US
Agence France Presse

Alexander Solzhenitsyn may have come to hate the Stalinist Soviet Union, but the capitalist United States did not win his heart either ... The conflict blew up on June 8, 1978, two years after Solzhenitsyn left Switzerland to set up in Cavendish, a village of 1,300 people, which Solzhenitsyn described as a little piece of Russia. On that day, addressing Harvard University students, the survivor of the Stalinist gulags said he would not recommend the United States as a model f or transforming the Soviet Union.

While in the East the party manages everything, he said, in the West everything is managed by commerce.

A World Split Apart
Alexander Solzhenitsyn - Harvard University (1978)

... If the world has not come to its end, it has approached a major turn in history, equal in importance to the turn from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. It will exact from us a spiritual upsurge, we shall have to rise to a new height of vision, to a new level of life where our physical nature will not be cursed as in the Middle Ages, but, even more importantly, our spiritual being will not be trampled upon as in the Modern era. This ascension will be similar to climbing onto the next anthropologic stage. No one on earth has any other way left but -- upward.

Honorable Exit From Empire
Patrick J. Buchanan

As any military historian will testify, among the most difficult of maneuvers is the strategic retreat... From 1989 to 1991, with the collapse of the Soviet Empire and breakup of the U.S.S.R., America had an opportunity to lay down its global burden and become again what Jeane Kirkpatrick called "a normal country in a normal time."

We let the opportunity pass by, opting instead to use our wealth and power to convert the world to democratic capitalism. And we have reaped the reward of all the other empires that went before: A sinking currency, relative decline, universal enmity, a series of what Rudyard Kipling called "the savage wars of peace."

Rendering Public Opinion Irrelevant
Glenn Greenwald - Salon.com

... The worldwide consensus is crystal clear -- citizens want their governments to be neutral and even-handed in the Israel-Palestinian conflict, not tilted towards either side. And that consensus is shared not just by a majority of American citizens, but by the overwhelming majority. Few political views, particularly on controversial issues, attract more than 70% support among American citizens. But the proposition that the U.S. government should be even-handed -- rather than tilting towards Israel -- attracts that much support.

Enabling Tyranny
Paul Craig Roberts

... Without the Constitution we have no protection. We simply stand naked before unbridled government power. That’s pretty much how we stand now after seven and a half years of the Bush Regime. Electing a Democratic Congress in 2006 did not make any difference... Across the political spectrum, Americans are happy to shred the Constitution in behalf of some agenda or the other. .. Bush’s "war on terror," essentially a hoax, has transformed the United States into a lawless nation. We are not lawless in the sense of an absence of laws. We are lawless in the sense that despite a surfeit of laws, we no longer have the rule of law.

Women's Brains Are Different From Men's
The Independent (Britain)

Men and women show differences in behaviour because their brains are physically distinct organs, new research suggests. Male and female brains appear to be constructed from markedly different genetic blueprints. The differences in the circuitry that wires them up and the chemicals that transmit messages inside them are so great as to point to the conclusion that there is not just one kind of human brain, but two, according to recent neurological studies.

U.S. Hispanic Population Now 15 Percent of Total
Kansas City InfoZine

The nation's Hispanic population increased 1.4 million to reach 45.5 million on July 1, 2007, or 15.1 percent of the estimated total U.S. population of 301.6 million. National and state estimates by race, Hispanic origin, sex and age released by the U.S. Census Bureau also show that the Hispanic population exceeded 500,000 in 16 states. Hispanics remained the largest minority group, with blacks (single race or multiracial) second at 40.7 million in 2007.

Obama: 'Make Sure Your Child Can Speak Spanish'
Newsmax

At a campaign event in Powder Springs, Georgia, Barack Obama told the crowd that "instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English, they'll learn English, you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish." Obama called America's lack of bilingual speakers "embarrassing," and said that "we should have every child speaking more than one language."

Weber to Address Peace Conference in Baltimore, Aug. 16

Mark Weber is scheduled to address a conference to promote peace and cross-cultural understanding on Saturday, August 16, in suburban Baltimore. The event is being organized by an Islamic association, Jamaat Al-Muslimeen. The IHR director will speak on the motives behind the US invasion and occupation of Iraq, the harmful consequences of America’s "blank check" support for Israel, the Jewish-Zionist grip on US foreign policy, the danger of new wars in the region, and the prospects for an effective peace movement.

Irving Describes His Austria Imprisonment at IHR Meeting

In an engaging talk at a memorable IHR meeting, June 14, 2008, David Irving described his harrowing arrest in Austria, his sensational trial in Vienna, and his 13 months of imprisonment. The British historian also spoke about wartime Germany’s harsh treatment of Jews, presenting a view of "the Holocaust" similar to the one he laid out more than 30 years ago in the first edition of Hitler's War. Mark Weber took aim at the American national mythology about World War II. He spoke about the two new books by Patrick J. Buchanan and Nicholson Baker, praising them as important antidotes to the familiar, much propagandized portrayal of the war.

First-Rate Talks Mark Successful IHR Meeting

First-rate talks by three seasoned speakers marked a memorable IHR meeting on May 24, 2008, in southern California. Paul Fromm reported with insight and humor on the battle for on-line free speech in Canada. Mark Weber, in a closely reasoned and well-referenced lecture, dismantled the myth of World War II as a "good war" clash between virtue and evil. Mark Green explained why the dread label of "anti-Semitism" is inaccurate and bogus.

The `Good War’ Myth of World War II

By Mark Weber

How accurate is this hallowed portrayal of America’s role in World War II? As we shall see, it does not hold up under close examination ... The three Allied leaders accomplished what they accused the Axis leaders of Germany, Italy and Japan of conspiring to achieve: world domination ... Presidential deception to justify war did not start with George W. Bush. Americans who express admiration for the US role in World War II, and for Franklin Roosevelt’s presidential leadership, have little moral right to complain when presidents follow his example and lead the country into war by breaking the law, subverting the Constitution, and lying to the people.

Israel at 60: A Grim Balance Sheet

By Mark Weber

... Contrary to claims made by American and Israeli political leaders, US support for Israel has never been in America’s authentic national interest, nor has it been based on a commitment to democracy and freedom ... In spite of its impressive military arsenal, and virtually unlimited support from the United States, Israel’s long-term prospects are not good ... Although Israel is a formidable military power, it is an aberrant, crisis-prone state, artificially kept alive with outside support, and based on an unworkable ideology.
